The MSI GE62VR 6RF Apache Pro was a capable 2016 15.6-inch gaming laptop built around Intel’s Core i7-6700HQ and NVIDIA’s Pascal-generation GeForce GTX 1060. It delivered respectable 1080p results for its time, but a dim display, short gaming battery life, heat, and changing fan behavior kept it from being an unequivocal winner. Because MSI sold multiple regional and memory, storage, display, and GPU configurations, the exact unit matters more than the model name alone.
What the GE62VR 6RF was in 2016
The GE62VR 6RF combined a four-core Core i7-6700HQ processor with a GTX 1060, positioning it in the middle of the 2016 gaming-laptop market. MSI’s global specification lists included both 3GB and 6GB GTX 1060 versions, so “GE62VR 6RF” does not identify one universal graphics configuration.
MSI also offered a 15.6-inch IPS-Level panel in either Full HD (1920×1080) or UHD (3840×2160). The chassis weighed 2.4kg with its battery and used a six-cell 51Wh battery. Those figures describe the global model family, not necessarily every regional retail package.
Configuration differences you must account for
Regional listings show why a review should identify its precise hardware. MSI Canada’s GE62VR 6RF-004CA specification listed an i7-6700HQ, 6GB GTX 1060, 16GB DDR4-2133, a 128GB M.2 SATA SSD, a 1TB 7200rpm SATA hard drive, a 51Wh battery and a 150W adapter. MSI’s global page listed a 180W adapter for the family. Match the label on your own machine before buying a replacement adapter.

The tested review machine was not a basic retail baseline
Laptop Mag’s Xotic PC sample used the i7-6700HQ, 32GB RAM, a 512GB M.2 PCIe SSD, a 1TB 7200rpm hard drive and a 6GB GTX 1060. It also had a custom wrap, replacement thermal compound, a software tune-up and an overclocked video card. Those changes can affect benchmark results, temperatures and acoustics, so they should not be treated as universal GE62VR 6RF behavior.
GamersNexus tested a different configuration: GTX 1060 and i7-6700HQ, 16GB DDR4 SO-DIMM, a 240GB NVMe M.2 SSD and a 1TB SATA hard drive. Comparing the two reviews is useful only when each result remains tied to its hardware and test method.
Historical 1080p performance
Laptop Mag published its review on 12 October 2016. At Ultra settings in Hitman with DirectX 12, its unit averaged 56 frames per second, below that review’s 67-fps category average. In Metro: Last Light at 1080p and High settings, it produced 30 fps. Its StreamVR Performance Test score was 7.1.

These numbers show a reasonable period-appropriate 1080p gaming machine, not a guarantee for every 6RF. The 32GB, PCIe-SSD and overclocked-GPU Xotic PC sample is especially different from a stock unit. They also say nothing about performance in modern games, which was not established by these reviews.

Battery life depends on what you are doing
Laptop Mag measured 3 hours 9 minutes during continuous Wi-Fi web browsing. That is a light productivity test. GamersNexus measured 68 minutes in a looped GRID: Autosport gaming test. Gaming draws far more power, so the figures are not competing estimates of one battery’s life; they answer different questions.
For an owner, the practical conclusion is straightforward: the 51Wh pack was sized for portability between outlets, not long unplugged gaming sessions. Battery health in a used machine will depend on age, charge cycles and replacement history, none of which those 2016 tests establish.

Thermals, fans and the display trade-off
GamersNexus observed fan speed fluctuating as the system managed temperature. That is a test observation from 2016, not a diagnosis of every surviving laptop. Dust, dried thermal compound, blocked vents and fan wear can make a current machine louder or hotter.
Laptop Mag’s Andrew E. Freedman summarized the 2016 verdict this way: “The MSI GE62VR 6RF Apache Pro is a midrange gaming laptop with a Pascal GPU and tons of customization options, but it offers mixed performance and a relatively dim screen.” The display criticism matters because a GTX 1060-equipped laptop can still feel disappointing for desktop work or brightly lit rooms if its panel lacks brightness.

Upgrade potential
Memory
MSI specifies two DDR4 memory slots and a 32GB maximum. Crucial’s model-specific compatibility information likewise lists two slots, a 32GB maximum and 16GB of removable standard memory. Before ordering, open the service panel or check the installed modules and confirm the supported DDR4 SO-DIMM speed for your exact SKU. A machine already containing two modules may require replacing both to reach a higher capacity.

Storage
The platform provides one M.2 slot supporting NVMe PCIe Gen3 or SATA drives and one 2.5-inch SATA bay. This makes an SSD replacement or addition the clearest way to improve boot and application responsiveness, while the 2.5-inch bay can retain a larger hard drive. Compatibility statements are category-level guidance: verify physical clearance, interface, capacity support and the existing drive arrangement before buying a specific SSD.
AC adapter
The global and Canadian MSI listings disagree on the adapter wattage they specify: 180W versus 150W. Do not select a generic replacement from the model name alone. Match your unit’s adapter label, connector, output voltage and polarity, and use the exact regional SKU when contacting a seller or service provider.
What to check on a used GE62VR 6RF
- Record the complete model and regional SKU from the underside label or firmware screen.
- In Windows or firmware, confirm whether the GPU has 3GB or 6GB of VRAM and note the installed memory amount.
- Check whether the M.2 slot contains a SATA or NVMe drive and whether the 2.5-inch bay is occupied.
- Inspect the panel for its resolution and test brightness, dead pixels and backlight uniformity.
- Run a sustained game or graphics test while listening for abnormal fan bearings and watching for throttling or shutdowns.
- Compare the battery’s reported full-charge capacity with its design capacity; a 2016-era pack may be substantially worn.
- Read the existing adapter’s wattage and electrical ratings before planning a replacement.
How it compares as a same-era laptop
For a 2016 comparison, use matched games and settings rather than model names. The meaningful axes are GTX 1060 performance, panel brightness and resolution, battery workload, 2.4kg portability, fan and thermal behavior, and the exact memory and storage package. Laptop Mag compared the GE62VR with the Gigabyte P55W v6 and Asus ROG G752VS in its period review; those prices and results belong to 2016 and should not be read as current market data.

2016 verdict, not a current buying recommendation
At launch, the GE62VR 6RF made sense for someone wanting Pascal graphics in a transportable 15.6-inch chassis and willing to accept modest battery endurance and a dimmer screen. Its two memory slots, M.2 support and 2.5-inch bay gave owners useful upgrade routes. The mixed game results, heat and fan behavior prevented it from being a clear top performer.
This review does not establish today’s used price, availability, modern-game frame rates or support-lifecycle status. Those questions require current, unit-specific evidence rather than the 2016 launch tests.
