msidntld.dll Is Missing: Find the Caller and Repair Windows

“ The code execution cannot proceed because msidntld.dll was not found.” You may also see “msidntld.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error,” or an older Outlook Express message stating, “The identity login could not be started.”

msidntld.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL with a historical connection to the Outlook Express identity subsystem. It is not a current general-purpose runtime that you should download from a random DLL archive.

Which fix applies to you

Use the description of the failure to choose the right path:

  • A Windows component or system process names the file: Run DISM and SFC, then restart and install Windows updates.
  • A game or third-party application names the file: Repair or reinstall that specific application from its official installer or launcher.
  • The problem started after antivirus action: Check quarantine and verify the file before restoring anything.
  • The error began after an update, cleanup tool, or disk problem: Try System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
  • The message mentions Outlook Express: Treat it as a legacy Windows 98, Me, or older Internet Explorer-era problem. Its historical repair instructions are not a supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 fix.
  • The message says the file is not designed to run on Windows: Check architecture and file integrity. The problem may be a mismatched or corrupted DLL rather than a missing one.
  • You cannot tell which program is requesting the file: Do not replace the DLL yet. Identify the calling executable first.

The key diagnostic detail is the application name shown in the error window. A missing DLL message identifies what failed to load, but it does not always identify the real cause or the program that originally installed the file.

What is msidntld.dll

The file description is Microsoft Identity Manager, and its recorded product association is Microsoft Windows Operating System, published by Microsoft Corporation. That description is metadata attached to the file. It is not evidence that the file belongs to the separate enterprise product Microsoft Identity Manager.

Historically, msidntld.dll worked with msident.dll as part of the Outlook Express identity and login machinery. Microsoft documented startup failures caused by damaged or incorrect copies of those files. The archived Microsoft article includes these errors:

  • “The identity login could not be started.”
  • “Outlook Express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized.”
  • “Outlook Express could not be started. It may not be installed correctly.”
  • Error code 0x80040154.

Outlook Express is obsolete and unsupported on current Windows versions. If a modern application is requesting msidntld.dll, it is more likely an old bundled component, a damaged Windows installation, an outdated installer, or a program incorrectly expecting a legacy dependency.

There is no current standalone Microsoft redistributable specifically named msidntld.dll. Windows repair and repair of the application that requested the file are safer than copying a replacement from the internet.

Where msidntld.dll is normally located

Historical Windows file inventories place the DLL in:

%WINDIR%System32

On a typical installation, that expands to a path similar to:

C:WindowsSystem32

The exact copy depends on the Windows release and installation architecture. Public inventories show historical copies associated with Windows XP, Windows 8, and Windows 10, including entries reported as Windows XP 6.00.2600.0000, Windows 8 6.2.9200.16384, and Windows 10 10.0.19041.1.

Those entries confirm historical presence and metadata, not that every release contains the same build. Do not choose a replacement based only on a version listed online.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the file exists

  1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Click the address bar.
  3. Enter:

text
%WINDIR%System32

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Search for msidntld.dll.

If it is present, do not assume it is correct. A file can be corrupted, unsigned, the wrong architecture, or in the wrong location. Right-click it, select Properties, and inspect the Details and Digital Signatures tabs. A system copy should be associated with Microsoft and the Windows operating system, but the signature and location should be considered together.

Also check the application’s own installation directory. If the error comes from a game or utility, a private copy beside that program’s executable may be the file being loaded.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the safest first repair when the error involves Windows itself or when you cannot identify another application as the caller. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while System File Checker uses that store to check and repair protected system files.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:

text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.

When DISM completes successfully, run SFC in the same administrator Command Prompt:

sfc /scannow

Allow the scan to reach 100 percent. Then restart Windows.

After restarting:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart again if Windows requests it.

Microsoft documents DISM repair in its Windows image repair guidance and provides the SFC procedure in its Windows repair guidance.

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not download msidntld.dll separately. Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with the /Source and /LimitAccess options. The source must match the installed Windows edition and servicing state closely enough to provide valid repair files.

If SFC says it repaired files, restart and launch the affected program again. If the error remains, the program may be requesting a dependency from its own directory, or the message may be naming a dependency rather than the underlying fault.

Repeating SFC without identifying what changed rarely provides more information. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds, while the repair is performed by the full version; Windows repair commands remain appropriate, and reinstalling the named application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the failure.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If the error appears only when starting a particular game, launcher, utility, or older program, repair that program before manually touching Windows folders.

For a traditional desktop program:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter:

text
appwiz.cpl

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select the affected program.
  3. Look for Change, Repair, or a similar installer option.
  4. Follow the program’s setup wizard.
  5. Restart Windows and test the application.

For a game installed through a launcher, use that launcher’s file verification or repair function. This replaces files from the game’s own official package and preserves the correct architecture and dependency layout. If verification reports repeated corruption, investigate the drive and the launcher installation rather than repeatedly copying DLLs.

If repair fails:

  1. Back up saves, profiles, and configuration files if the application stores them outside its installation directory.
  2. Uninstall the program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Download the installer from the application’s official publisher or use its official launcher.
  5. Install it again.
  6. Start the program before adding mods, overlays, or third-party patches.

No current Microsoft redistributable is documented as a supported standalone package for msidntld.dll. Reinstalling a program that improperly requests this legacy DLL is more appropriate than installing an unrelated runtime.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and security history

An antivirus product may quarantine a system file after a detection, or security software may block an older application from loading a legacy dependency.

Do not restore the file automatically.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review entries from the time the problem began.
  5. Open the relevant detection.
  6. Record the file path and detection name.
  7. If the file is in the expected Windows directory, check its Microsoft digital signature and confirm that the detection is a false positive before considering Restore.

If the file is unsigned, has an unexpected publisher, or is located in a temporary folder or an unfamiliar application’s directory, leave it quarantined. Run a full scan and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A restored file that immediately disappears again indicates that security software still considers it unsafe, or that another process is modifying it. In that situation, do not keep restoring copies. Determine which executable created or requested the file.

Fix 4: Identify the calling executable

A modern loader error may not be a direct Windows request. An application can load a DLL through another DLL, a plugin, an installer, or a compatibility layer.

Collect these details before replacing anything:

  • The exact error text and error code
  • The application or game name
  • The executable’s full path
  • Whether the failure happens during startup, installation, or an update
  • The Windows edition and version
  • The application architecture, if documented
  • Recent Windows updates, application updates, cleanup tools, or disk failures
  • Antivirus quarantine and detection history
  • Event Viewer entries from the same time
  • The file’s location, properties, and digital signature

To inspect Event Viewer:

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Open Application.
  5. Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
  6. Check Windows Logs > System as well.

The event may name the executable that failed, a faulting module, or an application path. That distinction matters. If a game executable loads the file from its own directory, reinstall the game. If a Windows process reports a protected-file problem, use DISM and SFC.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Do not infer the required DLL architecture from the fact that Windows itself is 64-bit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows can require 32-bit dependencies. A 64-bit process requires 64-bit dependencies. Windows uses the counterintuitive folder arrangement below:

  • System32 normally contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.
  • SysWOW64 generally provides 32-bit compatibility files for 32-bit applications.

The error may say only msidntld.dll, without stating which architecture was expected. A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate:

  • A 32-bit DLL loaded by a 64-bit process
  • A 64-bit DLL loaded by a 32-bit process
  • A damaged file
  • A file copied from a different Windows release
  • An installer deploying an incompatible legacy component

The correct response is not to copy the file into both folders. Use the application’s official repair or reinstall process, and use DISM/SFC for protected Windows components.

If you need to determine the process architecture, check the application’s documentation or installer requirements. On supported Windows installations, Task Manager can help identify running processes, but it cannot make an incompatible DLL compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there

msidntld.dll is not established as a graphics, audio, chipset, or input driver file. Device Manager is therefore not a direct repair tool for this DLL.

Use driver repair only when the failure began with a hardware utility, overlay, capture application, graphics control panel, or other program that clearly depends on a device driver.

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the affected application, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the relevant device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Note the provider and version.
  8. Use Update driver or download the current package from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Repair or reinstall the application that displayed the DLL error.

If the issue began immediately after a driver update, Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver may be appropriate when the button is available. Do not remove a driver simply because a DLL error mentions a Microsoft file.

Hunting through hardware pages and guessing which of several driver packages is stale can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use the hardware manufacturer’s official package when you already know which device is involved.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore is useful when msidntld.dll worked previously and the failure followed an update, cleanup utility, failed installation, or other system change. It does not replace personal documents, but it can remove recently installed drivers, applications, and system changes.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter:

text
rstrui.exe

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the failure began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. If Windows cannot boot normally, use Windows Recovery Environment > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.

System Restore is not the right choice when the error has existed since the application was first installed, when no suitable restore point exists, or when you suspect malware. In those cases, repair Windows, scan the system, or reinstall the affected application.

Should you use regsvr32?

Usually, no.

regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose a COM self-registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for missing system files, runtime libraries, or arbitrary application dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s historical Outlook Express article instructed Windows 98 and Me users to register msident.dll and msidntld.dll after extracting them from original installation media. That procedure was specific to those legacy systems and should not be treated as a general Windows 10 or Windows 11 repair.

Do not run commands such as these merely because the filename ends in .dll:

regsvr32 msidntld.dll

A registration error does not prove the file is missing or damaged. It may simply mean that the DLL was never intended to self-register.

Why downloading msidntld.dll is unsafe

Random DLL download sites can provide:

  • Malware disguised as a system file
  • The wrong Windows build
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • An unsigned or modified file
  • A file with incompatible servicing metadata
  • A copy that does not repair the program’s actual dependency problem

Copying a DLL into System32 can also create version conflicts and make future Windows servicing harder. It may hide the symptom while leaving a broken installer, corrupted component store, damaged disk, or incompatible application in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use these safe sources instead:

  • Windows component repair through DISM and SFC
  • Windows Update
  • The affected application’s official installer or launcher
  • Original Microsoft installation or recovery media when performing a supported repair
  • The hardware manufacturer’s official driver package when a driver is genuinely involved

There is no evidence of a current official Microsoft standalone installer dedicated to msidntld.dll.

Legacy Outlook Express instructions

If the exact error is from Outlook Express, the historical Microsoft fix involved repairing or reinstalling Outlook Express or Internet Explorer and restoring the files from original installation media, including Ie_extra.cab in the documented procedure. Microsoft also described registering the files on Windows 98 and Me.

That guidance belongs to the operating systems and software stack for which Outlook Express was designed. Outlook Express is not a supported application on modern Windows 10 or Windows 11. Do not attempt to recreate the Windows 98 procedure by downloading old files and registering them on a current installation.

If an old email archive or application requires Outlook Express, use a supported migration path to a current mail client or run the legacy environment separately from your everyday Windows installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevention and escalation

Once the error is resolved:

  1. Keep Windows Update current.
  2. Keep the affected application updated through its official launcher or installer.
  3. Avoid registry cleaners and DLL-fixing utilities that delete files based on incomplete dependency information.
  4. Keep reliable backups of application saves and important documents.
  5. Monitor antivirus history if the file repeatedly disappears.
  6. Check drive health if files become corrupted again after repair.
  7. Record the full executable path if the error returns.

Escalate the problem when DISM and SFC complete successfully but the same program still fails. At that point, capture the application name, full path, Windows version, architecture, event log entry, antivirus history, and the DLL’s signature details. The next repair should target the process that requests msidntld.dll, not the filename in isolation.

FAQ

Is msidntld.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows system DLL with the historical file description “Microsoft Identity Manager.” Its documented legacy role is associated with Outlook Express identity support.

Is it the Microsoft Identity Manager enterprise product?

There is no evidence that this DLL is part of that separate enterprise product. The description is file metadata and should not be treated as a product identification.

Where should msidntld.dll be?

Historical inventories place it in %WINDIR%System32. The correct architecture and version depend on the affected Windows installation and calling process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download it from the internet?

Do not download it from an arbitrary DLL repository. Use DISM and SFC, Windows Update, or the official installer for the application that requested it.

Will SFC restore it?

SFC can repair protected Windows files when a valid component-store source is available. Run DISM first, then sfc /scannow. If the error remains, identify the calling application because the DLL may belong to an application directory or may only be a dependency named by the loader.

Should I run regsvr32?

Not as a routine fix. Use it only when Microsoft or the software publisher specifically confirms that the DLL supports COM self-registration and provides the correct procedure.

Why would a modern game request this old DLL?

Possibilities include a legacy bundled component, a faulty installer, a compatibility layer, or a misleading dependency error. The error alone does not establish that a current game officially requires msidntld.dll. Verify or reinstall the game through its official launcher and identify the executable making the request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error says the DLL is not designed to run on Windows?

Check for corruption, wrong architecture, an incorrect replacement file, or an installer that deployed a mismatched copy. Do not assume that copying another version into System32 will solve it.
