imcommon.dll Missing: Repair the Visio Installation Safely

Length10 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

imcommon.dll is a Microsoft Visio component, so repair Visio before attempting Windows-wide DLL fixes. If Windows reports that imcommon.dll was not found, is missing, corrupted, or could not be loaded, use the checklist and repair sequence below.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing anything, record:

  • Which program shows the error: Visio, another Office application, or an unrelated program.
  • When the error began: after an Office update, failed repair, uninstall, cleanup, antivirus detection, or another software change.
  • Your Visio edition and installation type: retail Visio, Microsoft 365, MSI-based Office, or a managed deployment.
  • The Visio architecture: 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • The exact error text and requesting executable: note the application name shown in the message.

Do not download a loose copy of imcommon.dll. A file from a DLL-index site, another computer, or a different Visio release may have the wrong architecture, dependencies, version, or digital signature. It may also conceal malware and leave the damaged Visio installation unresolved.

What is imcommon.dll?

imcommon.dll is described as Visio database modeling common utilities. It is part of Microsoft Visio, not a normal Windows component and not a standard Visual C++ Redistributable, .NET, or DirectX runtime file.

Microsoft Visio 2010 update manifests list imcommon.dll alongside database-modeling components including dbengr.dll, dbshare.dll, imutil.dll, imwdd.dll, and modeleng.dll. One Microsoft manifest identifies imcommon.dll as version 14.0.7248.5000 with a size of 690,648 bytes. See Microsoft’s Visio 2010 update file manifest.

That confirms its Visio origin, particularly for older MSI-based installations such as Visio 2010. It does not establish that every current Visio release still includes the same file.

Common loader messages include:

  • “This application failed to start because imcommon.dll was not found.”
  • “The file imcommon.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because imcommon.dll was not found.”
  • “imcommon.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These are common Windows loader wordings, not a complete Microsoft-published list for this particular file.

Fix 1: Repair Visio or Office

Repairing the installed product is the safest and most likely solution because it restores the correct files for your edition, architecture, and installation technology.

Repair from Windows Settings

  1. Close Visio and every other Office application.
  2. Right-click Start and select Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Settings → Apps → Apps & features.
  3. Search for Microsoft Visio.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside Visio and choose Modify, Advanced options, or Repair, depending on what Windows displays.
  5. If an Office suite contains Visio, select that Office or Microsoft 365 entry instead.
  6. Choose Quick Repair when offered.
  7. Follow the prompts and restart Windows.
  8. Open Visio and test the operation that previously produced the error.

Microsoft’s general repair instructions are in Repair apps and programs in Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Quick Repair does not restore imcommon.dll, repeat the process and choose Online Repair. Online Repair can replace more of the Office installation and normally requires an internet connection.

Repair an MSI-based installation

Older Visio and Office installations may use Windows Installer rather than Click-to-Run.

  1. Close all Office applications.
  2. Press Windows key + R.
  3. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  4. Select Microsoft Visio or the relevant Microsoft Office entry.
  5. Select Change.
  6. Choose Repair and continue through the wizard.
  7. Restart Windows and test Visio again.

Do not repair only Windows when the missing file belongs to Visio. Windows repair tools generally do not restore application files installed exclusively by Office or Visio.

How to tell whether repair worked

Repair succeeded if:

  • Visio opens without the imcommon.dll message.
  • The document or feature that failed now works.
  • The error does not return after a restart.
  • The Visio installation remains listed in Installed apps or Programs and Features.

If the repair completes but Visio still reports the same file, continue with the architecture and installation checks below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Check the Visio version and bitness

A 32-bit Visio installation needs 32-bit Visio files even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing or copying a 64-bit replacement does not safely repair a 32-bit installation.

To inspect the installed Visio build:

  1. Open Visio if it starts.
  2. Select File → Account.
  3. Select About Visio.
  4. Record the product name, version, build, and whether it says 32-bit or 64-bit.

If Visio will not open:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Select the Visio entry and review its details.
  3. Check Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features for the installed edition.
  4. If the installation is managed by an organization, ask the administrator whether it uses Click-to-Run or MSI.

Microsoft’s Office Deployment Tool documentation explains that Visio desktop deployments can use either 32-bit or 64-bit architecture and that OfficeClientEdition controls the architecture.

Use the same:

  • Visio product and edition
  • 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • Click-to-Run or MSI installation technology
  • Microsoft account or organizational deployment source

Mixing these can leave an incomplete or incompatible Office installation.

Fix 3: Reinstall Visio from Microsoft

If repair is unavailable, fails, or Visio was partially removed, uninstall and reinstall the product from Microsoft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close Office applications.
  2. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  3. Select Microsoft Visio or the Office installation containing it.
  4. Choose Uninstall.
  5. Restart Windows when prompted.
  6. Reinstall Visio using the original Microsoft account, organization portal, product media, or approved deployment package.
  7. Choose the same edition and architecture recorded earlier.
  8. Run Windows Update after installation.
  9. Start Visio and test the affected document or feature.

For Visio 2010, Microsoft published separate 32-bit and 64-bit Service Pack 2 packages. Use the package matching Visio, not merely the architecture of Windows. The official information is in Description of Visio 2010 SP2.

If you use Microsoft 365 or a managed Office deployment, follow Microsoft’s Office installation troubleshooting guidance rather than obtaining an installer from an unofficial source.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may remove or quarantine an application file after an update or scan.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving imcommon.dll, Visio, or the Office installation directory.
  5. Review the detection name, file path, publisher information, and date.
  6. Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error.
  7. If the file is confirmed as part of the genuine Microsoft Visio installation, follow your organization’s security policy before restoring it.
  8. Run a full scan if the detection is suspicious, recurring, or located outside the Visio installation.

Microsoft explains Protection History in Windows Security.

If the file returns to quarantine, do not repeatedly restore it. Scan the complete system and repair or reinstall Visio from Microsoft. A recurring detection can indicate that the file is damaged, has been modified, or is not a genuine Microsoft component.

Fix 5: Install pending Windows and Office updates

An interrupted update can leave Visio files inconsistent.

  3. Install available updates.
  4. Restart Windows, including when no restart is immediately requested.
  5. Open Visio and test again.

Use Microsoft’s Windows update installation guidance.

For older Visio releases, install only updates intended for the exact product and architecture. Microsoft’s Visio 2010 update manifest and March 2021 Visio 2010 manifest both list imcommon.dll as part of the Visio package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a newer Windows update can replace an older Visio component. Repair or reinstall the Visio product when the application file remains absent.

Fix 6: Use DISM and SFC only when Windows corruption is also suspected

imcommon.dll is an Office application file, so DISM and SFC are not the first repair step. Use them when Windows itself is showing other problems, such as damaged built-in applications, update failures, unexplained system errors, or multiple missing protected system files.

Run DISM

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to complete.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft explains the correct order and purpose of these commands in Use System File Checker to repair missing or corrupted system files.

DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is guaranteed to restore a DLL installed only by Visio. If both commands complete successfully but Visio still fails, repair or reinstall Visio.

When the manual DISM and SFC process becomes repetitive, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; the repair function is provided by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling Visio remains the definitive fix for a Visio-owned file.

Fix 7: Use System Restore for a recent change

System Restore can help when the error began immediately after a driver, application, or Windows change and a suitable restore point exists.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe and press Enter.
  3. Select Next.
  4. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  6. Review the applications and drivers that will be changed.
  7. Select Next → Finish.
  8. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system settings, drivers, and installed programs while normally leaving personal files unchanged. Microsoft documents the process in System Restore.

System Restore is not a substitute for repairing Visio. If it does not resolve the error, reinstall the affected Visio edition.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

Do not start with:

regsvr32 imcommon.dll

regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents it as a registration tool for DLL command components in regsvr32.

There is no verified evidence that imcommon.dll is a COM or ActiveX server requiring registration. Running the command may produce an entry-point error, and it cannot replace a missing or damaged Visio installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What about drivers and Device Manager?

Drivers are not the normal source of an Office-owned imcommon.dll failure. Do not use Device Manager as the first repair path.

If the problem began after a graphics, printer, storage, or other hardware change, you can still check for a related system problem:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  5. Review the General tab for an error code.
  6. Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version.
  7. Use Update driver only with a driver supplied by Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
  8. Restart Windows and test Visio.

Avoid changing drivers simply because imcommon.dll is missing. A driver update will not normally restore a Visio application component.

If manually checking every device and driver is becoming difficult, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installing drivers through its full version is optional. For this specific error, Visio repair or reinstallation remains the appropriate fix unless Device Manager shows a separate hardware problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If another program requests imcommon.dll

If the message appears outside Visio:

  1. Identify the executable shown in the error or Task Manager.
  2. Check Settings → Apps → Installed apps for the program that launched it.
  3. Review that program’s official documentation and installation source.
  4. Repair or reinstall that program from its vendor.
  5. Do not place imcommon.dll in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
  6. If the program is obsolete and no longer maintained, remove it rather than borrowing a DLL from Visio.

An unrelated application may have bundled or incorrectly referenced an old Visio component. Installing Visio solely to satisfy an abandoned program is not a safe general solution.

If the error returns after repair

A recurring error usually means the underlying installation problem remains. Collect these details before contacting IT or Microsoft support:

  5. Record the faulting application, module, and exception information.

If repair and reinstall both fail, check disk health and available storage, then repeat the installation from a verified Microsoft source. FAQ

Is imcommon.dll a Windows system file?

No verified Microsoft evidence identifies it as a normal Windows system component. It is associated with Microsoft Visio and should normally remain with that application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is imcommon.dll part of Visual C++, .NET, or DirectX?

There is no verified evidence that it belongs to those runtimes. Installing them is not the correct first response.

Which Visio versions contain it?

Microsoft manifests clearly list it for Visio 2010 updates. Public evidence does not establish a complete version history for every Visio release, so do not assume that every current version uses the same file.

Can I copy it from another PC?

No. The other computer may have a different Visio edition, architecture, update level, installation technology, or compromised file. Repair the local installation instead.

Should I place it in System32?

No. It is not normally a Windows system DLL. Placing it in a system directory can create version conflicts and does not repair Visio.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Windows repair automatically replace it?

Usually not. DISM and SFC focus on Windows component and protected system files. Repair Visio for an application-owned component.

What is the safest fix?

Close Office applications and run Quick Repair for Visio or the Office suite containing it. If that fails, use Online Repair or reinstall the matching Visio edition and architecture from Microsoft.
