If Windows reports that msinfo32.dll was not found, says “The program can’t start because msinfo32.dll is missing”, or shows “Error loading msinfo32.dll”, the file name alone does not identify the real cause. msinfo32.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, but it is mainly associated with older Windows releases and legacy software rather than the modern Windows System Information tool.
The 60-second answer
Do not download msinfo32.dll from a random DLL website.

First identify which program displays the error. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft documents msinfo32.exe as the System Information command, not msinfo32.dll. If a modern application requests the DLL, that application may be old, incompletely installed, damaged, or loading a missing dependency.
Use this order:
- Repair or reinstall the application that displays the error.
- Check antivirus quarantine and the file’s Digital Signatures tab.
- Run DISM, then SFC, from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- If the program is legacy, repair it with its original installer, matching service pack, or official Microsoft media.
- Use
regsvr32only for the specific historical Windows 2000 or Server 2003 scenario where Microsoft documented it. - If Windows remains damaged, use System Restore or an in-place repair.
The expected location matters. Historical Windows records place this DLL under:

That does not mean you should copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. The historical path and the modern msinfo32.exe tool are different parts of the diagnosis.
What is msinfo32.dll?
msinfo32.dll is a Microsoft DLL connected with the older System Information component. Historical Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 records identify it as a Microsoft Corporation file located in the Microsoft SharedMSInfo directory. Historical builds vary, so an old version number or file size should not be treated as a universal specification.
Modern Windows uses the executable msinfo32.exe to launch System Information. Microsoft documents that command for Windows 10, Windows 11, and current Windows Server releases, including switches such as /nfo, /report, /computer, /showcategories, and /categories.Microsoft’s msinfo32 documentation
Some file databases describe msinfo32.dll with the internal or description label “Systeeminfo.” That label does not prove that a current third-party product named Systeeminfo installed the file, and the publisher field is not reliably established by current authoritative documentation.
The three names below must not be treated as interchangeable:
| Name | What it usually means |
|---|---|
msinfo32.dll |
A historical Microsoft DLL associated with older System Information components |
msinfo.dll |
A different, older or application-specific name that may be requested by legacy software |
msinfo32.exe |
The modern Windows System Information command |
Start by identifying the caller
A DLL error is reported by the program that tried to load the file. That program may be Windows, an old utility, a game launcher, an installer, or a hardware tool.
Record these details before changing files:
- The exact error text
- The name of the program or game in the title bar
- Whether the error appears during startup, installation, or when opening System Information
- The full path of the executable, if shown
- Whether the problem began after an update, failed repair, antivirus detection, disk cleanup, malware removal, or restoration of an old application
- Whether Windows is modern or a legacy release
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
If only one old application fails while Windows otherwise works normally, repair that application first. If multiple Windows components fail, Windows system-file corruption becomes more plausible.
A message such as “The specified module could not be found” also requires care. Windows may be unable to find a dependency needed by the named DLL, even when msinfo32.dll itself is present.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck whether the file exists and where it is being loaded from
Do not search only System32. A historical msinfo32.dll may be expected under:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedMSInfo
To inspect the file safely:
- Open File Explorer.
- Paste the historical path into the address bar.
- If the file exists, right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for the location and file size.
- Open the Details tab and record the file description, company, and version information.
- Open Digital Signatures if that tab is available.
- Select the signature, choose Details, and confirm whether Windows reports that the digital signature is valid and identifies Microsoft Corporation.
A valid name is not enough. A file can have the correct filename but the wrong architecture, build, origin, or contents. If the file is present in an unexpected application folder, do not overwrite it automatically.
To check whether the modern System Information tool works:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
msinfo32. - Press Enter.
If System Information opens, the Windows tool itself is working. The original error may belong to an old application that expects a historical DLL rather than the modern executable.

This is the safest and most likely fix when one game or program displays the message.
For a Microsoft Store application
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available. Resetting can remove application data, so use it only when you understand what the program stores locally.
For a traditional desktop program
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application.
- Choose Uninstall, if no repair option is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official website or use the original installation media.
- Install the same application version or a current supported release.
- Restart again and test it.
Some installers expose Repair from Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Right-click the program, choose Change or Repair, and follow the installer prompts.
For a game launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files command before manually replacing anything. That process restores the application’s own files and dependencies from the launcher’s trusted source.

SFC cannot reliably repair a private copy of a DLL installed inside an old program directory.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious DLL. This can happen after malware removal, a false positive, or an application update.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Find the detection related to
msinfo32.dll. - Read the detection name, original path, and action taken.
- Do not restore the file merely because an application says it is missing.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these are true:
- The file came from the expected Windows or application directory.
- The Digital Signatures tab identifies Microsoft Corporation or the known application publisher.
- The security product’s detection has been reviewed and determined to be a false positive.
- The application or Windows installation is from a trusted source.
If malware is suspected, scan the system before restoring anything. If system files, permissions, and security software were all affected, repairing or reinstalling Windows is safer than returning an unknown binary to service.

Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this path when several Windows features are unstable, the file may have been damaged by cleanup or malware removal, or Windows reports broader component corruption.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC may need as its source.Microsoft’s DISM and SFC procedure
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run the second command separately:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
DISM may take time and can appear to pause. Do not close the window while it is working.
If SFC reports that it did not find any integrity violations, protected Windows files appear intact. If it reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If it says that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.

A driver normally does not install msinfo32.dll, so do not treat every DLL error as a graphics or chipset-driver problem. Driver work makes sense when the failing application is a hardware monitor, diagnostic utility, capture tool, motherboard utility, or game that began failing after a driver change.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the failing program.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver provider and date.
- Use Update Driver, or download the correct package from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
- Restart Windows.
If the failure began directly after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when available. Do not install a driver from an unrelated download site.
Manually hunting through hardware pages and guessing which of many drivers is stale can be slow. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that identifies reported driver issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional and not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns msinfo32.dll.
Fix 6: Handle 32-bit and 64-bit mismatches
A 32-bit legacy program may require a 32-bit historical DLL even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit Windows installation can host both 64-bit and 32-bit software, but the loader still needs compatible architecture and dependencies.
Check the application first:
- A 32-bit program is often installed under
C:Program Files (x86). - A 64-bit program is commonly installed under
C:Program Files. - The installer or publisher documentation may identify the architecture.
- Task Manager can sometimes show whether a running process is 32-bit.
Do not solve an architecture mismatch by copying a file from another computer. A matching filename with a different Windows edition, service-pack level, architecture, or build can produce bad image, loader, or dependency errors.
If the program is old, install the matching application release and its official updates. If it requires a legacy Microsoft component, use original media, a matching service pack, or an applicable Microsoft hotfix rather than a third-party DLL repository.
Fix 7: Use regsvr32 only for the documented legacy case
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It works only when the DLL provides the registration entry point expected by the utility, normally DllRegisterServer.Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation
Microsoft’s archived guidance for a specific Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 Error 126 scenario documented this command:
Regsvr32 "C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft sharedMSInfomsinfo32.dll"
Use it only when all of these conditions match:
- The affected system is the documented legacy Windows release.
- The file is at that exact historical path.
- The file is a trusted, matching Microsoft build.
- The error is related to the legacy System Information component or the documented Task Scheduler scenario.
For modern Windows, an arbitrary copy, or a DLL inside an unrelated application folder, do not run regsvr32 merely because the filename ends in .dll. Bulk registration scripts can create new problems and are not a general Windows repair method.
Fix 8: Repair Windows in place or use System Restore
Escalate when DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, multiple built-in tools fail, or the error persists after application repair and updates.
Try System Restore when:
- The problem began after a recent software installation or update.
- A restore point exists from before the failure.
- You can accept that drivers and applications installed after that point may be removed.
Search Start for Create a restore point, open it, select System Restore, choose an appropriate restore point, and follow the wizard. Personal files are not normally removed, but review the affected programs list before confirming.
On supported Windows 11 systems, Microsoft also documents Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.Microsoft’s Windows 11 repair reinstall
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If that option is unavailable or fails, use official Windows installation media for an in-place repair, carefully selecting the option to keep personal files and applications where offered. Back up important data first.
Why random DLL downloads are the wrong fix
A third-party DLL download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a modified file. It may also leave the actual cause untouched, such as a broken application installation, a missing dependency, or Windows component corruption.
There is no verified current Microsoft download page offering msinfo32.dll as a standalone replacement. The safe sources are:
- Windows repair tools such as DISM and SFC
- Windows Update
- The original application installer
- Official Microsoft installation media, service packs, or applicable hotfixes for legacy systems
- A verified antivirus quarantine restore when the file is confirmed authentic
Do not copy a file into System32 simply because an error mentions a DLL. Do not copy from another PC unless the Windows edition, architecture, service-pack level, and exact file version are known to match, and even then prefer supported repair media.
FAQ
Is msinfo32.dll the same as msinfo32.exe?
No. msinfo32.exe is the modern Windows System Information command. msinfo32.dll is a historical DLL associated with older System Information components. A program requesting the DLL may be legacy or damaged.
Should msinfo32.dll be in System32?
Not automatically. Historical evidence places it under:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedMSInfo
Do not move or copy it into System32 without a verified repair procedure for the exact system.
Is “Systeeminfo” a program that installed the file?
Not necessarily. “Systeeminfo” may be a localized or database description associated with the file. It does not establish a current independent product or a verified publisher.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCan SFC repair this file?
SFC can repair protected Windows files when the file is part of the installed Windows component set. It will not necessarily repair a private copy installed by an old application. Repair or reinstall that application separately.
Does Error 126 prove that msinfo32.dll is missing?
No. It can indicate that the named DLL is missing or damaged, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL cannot be found.
Should I register the DLL with regsvr32?
Only for the specific documented legacy Windows 2000 or Server 2003 case, using the historical Microsoft SharedMSInfo path and a trusted matching file. It is not a general fix for modern Windows DLL errors.
When should I stop troubleshooting?
Stop replacing files when DISM and SFC fail, several Windows components are affected, or the error survives application repair and updates. At that point use System Restore, Windows 11’s repair reinstall where available, or an in-place Windows repair.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
