1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsvidisws.dll is a 32-bit Microsoft Visual InterDev component, not a normal Windows system file or a modern Visual C++ runtime. When vidisws.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the old Visual InterDev application from its original Microsoft installation media.
What this file actually does
The filename belongs to the Microsoft (R) Visual InterDev Package, an application component installed with Microsoft (R) Visual InterDev. Visual InterDev was Microsoft’s legacy web-development environment for Active Server Pages and related projects.
That distinction matters. vidisws.dll is not normally supplied by:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- DirectX
- .NET
- The current Visual C++ Redistributable packages
- Windows Update
- A graphics, audio, chipset, or motherboard driver
Available metadata identifies the file as Win32, meaning it is intended for a 32-bit application. A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit programs, but it still needs the correct 32-bit dependency in the application’s own installation context.

The most reliable source is the original Visual InterDev or Visual Studio 6.0 setup media. Microsoft’s archived installation documentation also describes Visual InterDev server components being installed from Visual Studio or Visual InterDev CD media.
Archival records identify more than one historical file build, so a random copy may have the wrong version even when its filename matches. The file’s exact size, version, and compatibility depend on the original product media and service-pack level.
Cause-by-symptom guide
| What you observe | Most likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when starting Visual InterDev or Visual Studio-era tools | Damaged or incomplete installation | Repair or reinstall the original application |
| It began after uninstalling an old program | A leftover shortcut, file association, or startup entry still launches the removed software | Remove the orphaned entry or reinstall the required component |
| The message appeared after antivirus activity | Quarantine or security-product removal | Review quarantine, then reinstall from trusted media |
| The file exists but Windows says the specified module cannot be found | A dependent legacy DLL is missing | Reinstall the complete application and inspect dependencies |
The error occurs only when opening an old .asp or .vip project |
A file association still points to Visual InterDev | Repair the association or remove the obsolete application |
| SFC or DISM reports no problems | This is expected if only Visual InterDev is damaged | Repair Visual InterDev instead |
| The error appears in a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows | Architecture or compatibility problem | Restore the 32-bit application component and use compatibility settings if needed |
Commonly indexed wording includes “vidisws.dll was not found,” “vidisws.dll is missing or corrupted,” and “Error loading vidisws.dll.” These are examples of reported wording, not proof of one specific cause.
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting vidisws.dll
Before replacing anything, find the executable that is failing. The DLL belongs to an application, so repairing the wrong program will not help.
Check the error dialog
Read the title bar and message carefully. Some dialogs identify the application name. If the message appears after double-clicking a shortcut, that shortcut is the first place to investigate.
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
- Note the executable name and folder.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
If the target points to Visual InterDev, Visual Studio 6.0, or an old development folder, continue with the application repair steps below.
Check Task Manager
If the error flashes briefly:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Processes or Details.
- Start the failing program again.
- Watch for the process that appears immediately before the error.
- Right-click it and select Open file location.
Do not delete files from the folder yet. The location tells you which installation owns the missing dependency.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Read the Faulting application name and Faulting module name fields.
Event Viewer may identify a different missing module. That is important because “the specified module could not be found” can mean that vidisws.dll exists but one of its dependencies does not.
Fix 2: Repair Visual InterDev or Visual Studio 6.0
This is the primary repair path. It restores the owning application and its related files together instead of guessing which DLL belongs in which folder.

Try the installed-program repair option
On Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find Microsoft Visual InterDev, Microsoft Visual Studio, or the relevant Visual Studio-era entry.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if offered.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Insert the original installation disc or mount the trusted installation image when requested.
- Select the Visual InterDev component if the installer presents a feature list.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the original application again.
Some very old installers do not expose a modern Repair button. In that case, run the original setup program and choose the option that reinstalls or maintains the existing installation.
Reinstall from original media
If the product is not listed in Programs and Features:
- Locate the original Visual InterDev or Visual Studio installation media.
- Insert the disc, or mount the installation image.
- Open the media in File Explorer.
- Run
SETUP.EXE. - Follow the installation wizard.
- Install the Visual InterDev package and any server components required by the original project.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program from its original installation folder.
Archived Microsoft instructions refer to a Vid_ss setup directory for Visual InterDev server components. If the installer offers component selection, do not install an unrelated runtime and assume it will provide vidisws.dll.
Microsoft’s Visual Studio 6.0 SP6 notes state that the service pack contains no fixes for Visual InterDev 6.0. Installing SP6 may be relevant to a broader Visual Studio installation, but it should not be treated as a standalone replacement for this file.
How to tell whether repair worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The original program starts without the
vidisws.dllmessage. - The application opens the affected project.
- The same error does not return after a reboot.
- The program’s installation folder contains the component restored by setup.
If the error remains, do not immediately download a replacement DLL. Check whether the message names another module, whether antivirus removed a file, and whether the application is being launched from an old shortcut or project association.
Fix 3: Check whether the application is obsolete
Visual InterDev is a legacy product and is no longer a current supported development environment. Microsoft’s lifecycle information lists Visual Studio 6.0 as out of support.
If you do not use the old program anymore, restoring vidisws.dll may be the wrong solution. The error may be caused by a stale startup entry, shortcut, or file association.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
taskschd.msc. - Press Enter.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Inspect tasks that launch the old application.

Check file associations
Old .asp and .vip associations may still point to Visual InterDev components.
- Right-click an affected
.aspor.vipfile. - Select Open with.
- Choose Choose another app.
- Select the current editor or browser you actually use.
- Enable Always use this app if appropriate.
- Click OK.
If the old application is completely unnecessary, uninstall it through Settings → Apps → Installed apps or Control Panel → Programs and Features. Removing the obsolete launcher is safer than placing an old DLL into a Windows system directory.

Fix 4: Review antivirus quarantine and recent cleanup
Security software, disk-cleanup utilities, and manual housekeeping can remove files from old installations.
Check quarantine
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the Visual InterDev installation folder.
- Review the detection details before taking action.
Restore a quarantined file only when:
- It came from trusted original installation media.
- The parent Visual InterDev application is genuinely required.
- You have scanned the complete installation.
- You understand why the security product removed it.
If the file came from an unknown download, do not restore it. Reinstall the complete application from legitimate media instead.
Recommended Free Tools
Check recent cleanup activity
If the error started after storage cleanup:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → Storage.
- Open Cleanup recommendations or Storage Sense settings.
- Review what was removed.
- Do not restore files from an untrusted recovery package.
- Reinstall the owning application if its files were deleted.
A cleanup tool may remove an unused legacy component while leaving behind a shortcut or file association that still tries to launch it.
Fix 5: Check dependencies and the application path
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may have found vidisws.dll but failed to load another DLL that it requires.
First, check the application folder:
- Open the folder containing the failing executable.
- Search that folder for
vidisws.dll. - If it is present, do not copy it elsewhere.
- Run the application from its original shortcut.
- Note whether the error changes.
If reinstalling Visual InterDev does not help, use a reputable dependency-analysis utility to inspect the failing executable and identify secondary missing modules. The actual failure may involve a legacy runtime, server component, or another file rather than vidisws.dll itself.
Also verify that the shortcut points to the intended installation. An old shortcut can launch a partially removed copy from a different drive while a complete installation exists elsewhere.

vidisws.dll is identified as a Win32 component. On 64-bit Windows, that normally means it belongs with the 32-bit Visual InterDev application, not as a file to be placed manually in C:WindowsSystem32.
The names of Windows folders can be confusing:
System32contains native system components and is not a general DLL drop location.SysWOW64supports Windows’ 32-bit compatibility layer, but it is also not a safe destination for manually downloaded application DLLs.- Application DLLs should normally remain in the application’s own installation directory.
If the repaired application still fails:
- Right-click the application executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if the application requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run the application again.
Compatibility mode cannot create a missing dependency. It only helps when the legacy program is present but behaves incorrectly under a modern Windows environment.
For work that still depends on Visual InterDev, an isolated virtual machine running a suitable legacy environment is safer than weakening security settings on a daily-use Windows installation.

Fix 7: Run DISM and System File Checker only for broader Windows damage
Because vidisws.dll is a Visual InterDev application component, SFC and DISM will not normally recreate it. Use these tools when other Windows components are also failing, Windows servicing is damaged, or system files show broader corruption.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows.

After DISM completes:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not disprove a Visual InterDev problem. It means protected Windows files are intact. If SFC repairs files but vidisws.dll is still missing, return to the Visual InterDev repair path.
When repeatedly running DISM and SFC is only producing the same result, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what it found; its repair actions are handled by the full version, but reinstalling Visual InterDev remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Update drivers only when the failure points to hardware support
A graphics, chipset, storage, or audio driver does not normally install vidisws.dll. Do not treat a Visual InterDev DLL error as a reason to replace every driver on the system.
Driver troubleshooting is relevant only when Event Viewer shows a separate device or compatibility failure, or when the old application crashes after a system upgrade.

Why random DLL downloads and regsvr32 are poor fixes
Do not download vidisws.dll into System32
A loose DLL downloaded from an unknown source can have:
- Malware or unwanted code
- The wrong historical build
- The wrong architecture
- Missing companion files
- Different exports from the copy your application expects
- A version conflict with the original installation
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can also create DLL search-order problems and affect unrelated programs.
The safe sources are the original Visual InterDev or Visual Studio installation media and a trusted backup made from that installation. There is no current standalone Microsoft download page specifically offering vidisws.dll.
Do not use regsvr32 as a universal repair command
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. It does not restore missing files and does not make every application DLL loadable.
Visual InterDev documentation discusses registration problems involving separate LinkView DLLs, not proof that vidisws.dll should be registered. Unless the application’s own documentation explicitly requires registration and the file provides the correct registration entry point, running commands such as these is unlikely to help:

FAQ
Is vidisws.dll part of Windows?
No evidence identifies it as a standard Windows component. Available records associate it with Microsoft Visual InterDev.
Is it a Visual C++ Redistributable file?
No. Installing a current Visual C++ Redistributable is not a substitute for reinstalling Visual InterDev.
Is vidisws.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Available metadata identifies it as Win32, so it appears to be a 32-bit component. Conflicting third-party labels should not override the architecture of the original application media.
Will Windows Update restore it?
There is no evidence that current Windows Update packages supply this Visual InterDev file. Windows Update may repair Windows itself, but it is not the normal source for an obsolete application DLL.
Can I copy it from another computer?
Only use a copy from a trusted, matching Visual InterDev installation, and prefer running the original installer because the application may require related files and registry settings. Do not copy it into a Windows system directory.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Why does the error say the specified module cannot be found when the file exists?
One of vidisws.dll’s dependencies may be missing, incompatible, or blocked. Reinstall the complete Visual InterDev component and inspect the failing executable’s dependencies if the problem continues.
What if I no longer need Visual InterDev?
Uninstall the obsolete program and remove the shortcut, startup entry, or file association that still launches it. Restoring the DLL is unnecessary if the application itself is no longer required.
What is the safest fix on Windows 11 or Windows 10?
Identify the requesting program, repair or reinstall Visual InterDev from legitimate original media, reboot, and test the original application. If that program is no longer needed, remove its orphaned launch entries instead of downloading the DLL.
