“msirsock_object.dll” missing or not found
Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because msirsock_object.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “msirsock_object.dll was not found.”
- “Cannot find msirsock_object.dll.”
- “Failed to load msirsock_object.dll.”
- “Error loading msirsock_object.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The application has failed to start because msirsock_object.dll was not found.”
The exact wording varies by program and Windows version. A message saying that the specified module could not be found can also mean that a dependency used by the DLL is missing.
The 60-second answer
msirsock_object.dll is an application file associated with the old Sony Ericsson PC Suite and its Mobile Phone Monitor component. It is identified as the MSIrSock_object Module, published by Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB, and is not a normal Windows system DLL.
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the complete Sony Ericsson PC Suite installation from your original trusted installer or installation media. Do not download the DLL by itself, copy it into System32 or SysWOW64, or run regsvr32 as a first step.
If you no longer use the old Sony Ericsson software, uninstall the parent program instead of trying to preserve one orphaned DLL.

What this file does and where it belongs
Public file information associates msirsock_object.dll with Sony Ericsson software rather than Windows itself. Historical installations placed it in an application directory similar to:
C:Program FilesSony EricssonMobile2Mobile Phone Monitor
The exact folder can differ between PC Suite releases and Windows installations. The important point is that the file normally belongs beside the Sony Ericsson application that loads it, not in a Windows directory.
The file appears to be a 32-bit Win32 DLL used by old 32-bit Sony Ericsson software. Windows can run many 32-bit applications on 64-bit editions through its compatibility layers, but the application and DLL still need compatible architectures. Replacing the file with a similarly named 64-bit DLL will not solve the problem.
Do not treat the filename alone as proof that a copy is safe. If a file is present, verify its location, digital signature where available, installer provenance, and antivirus status.
Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
- Sony Ericsson PC Suite was partially uninstalled or corrupted.
- Antivirus software quarantined the DLL.
- A cleanup utility or failed upgrade removed part of the application.
- The program was copied from another computer without all its dependencies.
- The old software is incompatible with the current Windows installation.
- The DLL is present, but another module it requires is missing.
- Windows components or storage have been damaged.
Installing Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or unrelated runtime packages is not the normal solution for this file. There is no verified indication that msirsock_object.dll is a Microsoft runtime component.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Sony Ericsson PC Suite
This is the most likely and most reliable fix.
Try Windows repair first
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Sony Ericsson PC Suite, Mobile Phone Monitor, or a similarly named Sony Ericsson entry.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair if that option exists.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Start PC Suite again without connecting the phone initially.
If Windows does not offer a repair option, use the original installer or installation media to reinstall the complete package. Do not install only a standalone DLL.
If repair is unavailable
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the Sony Ericsson PC Suite entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart the computer when prompted.
- If an uninstaller is not listed, open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the Sony Ericsson software and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows again.
- Run the original trusted PC Suite installer as an administrator.
- Reconnect the phone only after installation finishes.
- Restart once more if the installer requests it.
If the installer is on removable media, copy the installer to the local drive before running it. Right-click the installer, select Properties, and use the Digital Signatures tab when available. If you cannot verify where an installer came from, do not use it.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- PC Suite opens without the DLL error.
- Mobile Phone Monitor starts normally.
- The error no longer appears at Windows sign-in.
- The phone is detected after its drivers finish installing.
- Synchronization or phone-management functions open normally.
If the same error returns immediately after a clean reinstall, the issue may be a missing dependency, antivirus quarantine, or modern-Windows compatibility problem rather than the DLL alone.

Check Windows Security
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving the Sony Ericsson installation folder or
msirsock_object.dll. - Expand the detection to see its path and action.
- Compare the path with the expected PC Suite installation directory.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- The file came from the original trusted installer or installation media.
- The detected path belongs to the Sony Ericsson application.
- The installer and remaining application files are trustworthy.
- A current scan does not identify the installation as malicious.
- You understand the risk of allowing the file.
Microsoft’s guidance for Protection history is available through the Windows Security Protection history instructions.
If the detection is uncertain, leave the file quarantined, scan the entire computer, and reinstall PC Suite from a trusted source instead. Reinstalling is safer than manually restoring a suspicious standalone DLL.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 3: Check whether a dependency is missing
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that msirsock_object.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a library that the Sony Ericsson DLL needs.
First, check the application folder:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the Sony Ericsson PC Suite or Mobile Phone Monitor folder.
- Confirm whether
msirsock_object.dllis present. - Do not move, rename, or replace it yet.
- Check whether other files in the same folder were recently removed or quarantined.
- Review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history again.
If the DLL is present but the program still fails, perform a complete repair or reinstall. Do not download individual dependency files from random DLL sites.
You can also inspect the Windows event record:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time PC Suite failed.
- Note the application name and any additional module name.
- Use that information when deciding whether a dependency or compatibility issue is involved.
A clean reinstall remains more reliable than manually reconstructing an old application directory.
Fix 4: Confirm 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The available file information identifies msirsock_object.dll as a Win32, or 32-bit, DLL. It should be loaded by the corresponding 32-bit Sony Ericsson application.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not:
- Replace it with a 64-bit DLL.
- Copy it into both
C:WindowsSystem32andC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Assume that a file with the same name from another computer is compatible.
- Mix files from different PC Suite releases.
The names of the Windows folders can be confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains many 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit compatibility components. Neither folder is the normal home for an application-specific Sony Ericsson DLL.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
A 64-bit version of Windows can generally run older 32-bit applications, but that does not guarantee that every legacy installer or driver will work. Microsoft documents the architecture rules in its guide to running 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows.

If the installer fails on Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Right-click the original installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try the older Windows version associated with the original software documentation.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer again.
Compatibility mode is not a guarantee. If the software requires obsolete drivers, the practical solution may be an isolated older Windows environment rather than forcing the files into a current installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 5: Reinstall the Sony Ericsson phone and USB drivers
If the error appears only when connecting an old phone, the PC Suite installation and its phone or USB drivers may both be damaged.
- Disconnect the phone from the computer.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove Sony Ericsson PC Suite and related entries if you are preparing for a complete reinstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Other devices.
- Look for a Sony Ericsson device, an unknown device, or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Disconnect and reconnect the phone only after PC Suite has been reinstalled.
- Allow Windows or the original installer to load the appropriate driver.
If Windows reports that the device is working correctly but PC Suite still fails, the application itself is still the primary suspect. Do not substitute a random phone driver merely because it has a similar name.
When manually checking several device models and driver packages, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are outdated; its free scan identifies the issue, while driver installation is handled by the full version. The original Sony Ericsson PC Suite and its driver package remain the definitive source for this legacy phone software.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
These commands are secondary checks. They normally do not recreate a missing Sony Ericsson application DLL, but they can repair damaged Windows components that prevent older software from launching correctly.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Run DISM first
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Do not close the window if progress appears to pause temporarily.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows when the scan finishes, then test PC Suite.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Review the repair result, run DISM again if appropriate, and consider Windows recovery options.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its system-file repair guidance.
If you repeatedly run SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that identifies reported Windows issues; its free scan shows the findings, while repairs are completed by the full version. For this file, repairing or reinstalling Sony Ericsson PC Suite is still the definitive fix when the application installation is incomplete.
Fix 7: Check the disk and restore Windows if the problem is broader
If multiple application files are disappearing, the issue may involve storage errors, an interrupted update, or system damage.
Scan the file system
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
chkdsk /scan
- Press Enter.
- Follow any instructions Windows provides.
If other programs are also losing files, use the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic utility or have the computer checked by a technician. Do not continue reinstalling applications onto a failing drive.

Use System Restore
If PC Suite worked recently and the error began after a driver, cleanup utility, or system change:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore process if the point is suitable.
- Restart Windows and test PC Suite.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed software or drivers. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain the available recovery paths.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL download sites websites are a poor repair method for this error. An isolated download can contain malware, belong to the wrong PC Suite release, use the wrong architecture, or require dependencies that are still missing. It can also conceal the actual problem, such as a damaged installation or quarantined file.
Copying the file into System32 or SysWOW64 is especially unreliable. The Sony Ericsson program normally expects its application DLL in its own installation directory.
The safe sources are:
- The original Sony Ericsson PC Suite installer you already trust.
- Original installation media supplied with the phone or software.
- A verified organizational software archive managed by your IT department.
- A clean reinstall of the complete application package.
A current official download for this exact legacy component may no longer be available. If you cannot obtain a trustworthy installer, do not use a random DLL as a substitute.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose COM registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. An application-support DLL is not automatically a self-registering COM server.
Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 msirsock_object.dll
unless the software vendor specifically instructs you to register this file. A registration error does not repair a missing application dependency, and registering an arbitrary DLL from an untrusted source creates additional troubleshooting noise.

When uninstalling is the right fix
Sony Ericsson PC Suite is obsolete software. If no one needs it for a specific phone, uninstalling it is safer than leaving a broken startup entry or repeatedly restoring old files.

Frequently asked questions
Is msirsock_object.dll a Windows file?
No. Available evidence associates it with Sony Ericsson PC Suite and Mobile Phone Monitor. It is not normally supplied by Microsoft and should not be placed in a Windows system folder.
Is the file safe?
The filename alone cannot establish safety. Check its application path, digital signature where available, installer provenance, and antivirus history. A copy from an unknown DLL website should not be trusted merely because the name matches.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Restore it through repair or reinstallation of the Sony Ericsson application. Copying it to System32 or SysWOW64 can create architecture and path problems.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not as the first response. There is no verified evidence that this file is part of those Microsoft components. Repair Sony Ericsson PC Suite first and investigate a specific dependency error if one remains.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the DLL exists?
The message may refer to a dependency required by msirsock_object.dll. It can also indicate corruption, incompatible architecture, or an incomplete application installation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Will SFC restore this DLL?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, not third-party application files. Use SFC and DISM only as secondary Windows-integrity checks.
Why does the error appear only when I connect my phone?
PC Suite may load Mobile Phone Monitor and its supporting files only during phone detection. Reinstall the complete PC Suite package and its original phone or USB drivers, then reconnect the device.
What if the old installer will not run on Windows 11?
Try the installer’s compatibility settings, but do not assume the program will work on a current system. If the software requires obsolete drivers, use a controlled older Windows environment or retire the application if the phone no longer needs it.
What is the final fix if I still cannot start the program?
Identify the program named in the error, remove the damaged Sony Ericsson installation, and reinstall the complete package from a trusted source. If no trustworthy installer exists and the software is no longer needed, uninstall the obsolete program and remove its orphaned startup entries.
