msjet40.dll is the 32-bit Microsoft Jet 4.0 database-engine library. If msjet40.dll is missing, Windows or an older application usually needs its original Microsoft Jet component repaired, not a random replacement DLL.

This file supports legacy Access .mdb databases, DAO applications, Jet OLE DB connections, and older business software. It is a genuine Microsoft file, but it is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, graphics driver, or modern .NET assembly.

Microsoft’s Jet 4.0 file inventory identifies the file as x86, including in documentation for 64-bit Windows.

What the error means

You may see one of these messages:

  • “A Required .dll file, Msjet40.dll was not found.”
  • “The program can’t start because msjet40.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “msjet40.dll was not found.”
  • “Cannot find msjet40.dll.”
  • “The procedure entry point could not be located in msjet40.dll.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because msjet40.dll was not found.”
  • “msjet40.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The wording helps narrow the cause:

  • Missing or not found usually means the file or one of its related Jet components is absent, inaccessible, or being loaded from the wrong location.
  • Entry point not found often means that the application and installed Jet files are from incompatible releases.
  • Not designed to run on Windows is a general loader error. It can indicate corruption, the wrong architecture, an incomplete update, or an incompatible replacement file. It does not prove malware.

Before repairing Windows, identify which program displays the message. If only one old application fails, repair that application first. If several older database programs fail, Windows component damage or a shared data-access problem becomes more likely.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application

This is the safest first fix when one program reports the error.

An application installer may include Jet-related files, registry configuration, database providers, or supporting files that Windows repair tools do not know about. Copying msjet40.dll into the program folder can leave those other components broken.

Use the Windows repair option

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the application that produces the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu, or select the application and choose Advanced options.
  6. Choose Repair, if available.
  7. Start the program again.

If the error remains:

  1. Return to the application’s settings page.
  2. Select Reset, if available and appropriate for that program.
  3. If there is no repair option, uninstall the application.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Reinstall it from the original Microsoft or application-vendor installer.
  6. Test the program before adding extra database components.

Back up any database files before uninstalling software. Reinstalling a program should not normally delete separate .mdb files, but important data should not depend on that assumption.

Use the original installer’s repair mode

Some older desktop programs have their own maintenance wizard:

  1. Find the original setup program.
  2. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  3. Choose Repair, Modify, or ** reinstall**, depending on the available option.
  4. Accept the original installation location unless the vendor documentation requires another path.
  5. Restart Windows and test the application.

If the program was moved from another computer by copying its folder, install it properly instead. Many older applications require registry entries and shared components that are not transferred with the executable files.

Fix 2: Install Windows updates, then repair system files

Use this path when the file is missing from Windows, several programs fail, or the problem began after an interrupted update, disk cleanup, or system change.

Check Windows Update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Test the affected application.

On older Windows 10 installations, the update controls may appear under Update & Security > Windows Update.

Do not replace a patched Jet file with an older copy merely because an old database program behaves differently after a Windows update. Jet security updates have changed behavior in some older Access applications. If the application stopped working after an update but the DLL is present, look for an application update or vendor-supported compatibility fix.

Run DISM

DISM repairs the Windows component store that Windows uses to restore protected files.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish.
  3. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause temporarily.

A successful result reports that the restore operation completed. If DISM reports that it could not repair the component store, restart Windows, check Windows Update again, and repeat the command. Persistent DISM errors may require examining the DISM log or repairing Windows installation media.

Run System File Checker

After DISM finishes, run SFC in the same administrator Command Prompt:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected program.

SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or found files it could not repair. It is not guaranteed to restore every application-installed Jet component. If SFC repairs files but the application still fails, return to the application installer and repair that program.

Microsoft documents this process in its guidance for repairing a Windows image and System File Checker.

Repeating DISM and SFC without checking what changed can make diagnosis difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it detects, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and repairing the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing dependency.

Fix 3: Confirm the application’s architecture

msjet40.dll is a 32-bit file. That remains true when Windows itself is 64-bit.

The directory names are confusing:

  • C:WindowsSystem32 contains native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system components used by the Windows compatibility environment.

Do not move a 32-bit Jet file from SysWOW64 to System32. Do not install a 64-bit database engine merely because the operating system is 64-bit.

A 32-bit application needs 32-bit database dependencies. A 64-bit application generally needs 64-bit dependencies. Determine the application architecture rather than guessing from Windows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select the Details tab.
  3. Right-click a column heading.
  4. Choose Select columns.
  5. Enable Platform, if available.
  6. Check whether the program is listed as 32-bit or 64-bit.

You can also inspect the application vendor’s system requirements or installation package.

Architecture mismatches may produce messages such as:

  • “Provider not registered.”
  • “Bad image.”
  • “Not designed to run on Windows.”
  • A missing-provider error even though a similarly named file exists.

Fix 4: Install the correct Microsoft database component

Do not assume every Jet-related error requires Access Runtime or the Access Database Engine. These packages provide newer ACE components and are not universal replacements for Jet 4.0.

Check the application’s documentation or connection string first. A program using:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Jet 4.0
  • DAO
  • .mdb
  • Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0

may require its original Jet-compatible installation. A program specifically requiring ACE, Access file connectivity, or an Office database provider may require a current Access package instead.

Microsoft provides Microsoft 365 Access Runtime with x86 and x64 downloads. It is intended for Access applications and Office-file connectivity.

Microsoft also provides the Access Database Engine 2016 Redistributable, with separate x86 and x64 installers. Microsoft marks that package’s support as ended and recommends Microsoft 365 Access Runtime as its replacement.

Before installing either package:

  1. Close Office and all database programs.
  2. Check whether the application specifically requires ACE.
  3. Confirm whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  4. Remove conflicting older database-engine installations only when the vendor or Microsoft instructions require it.
  5. Install the matching architecture.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Test the original program.

Installing both x86 and x64 database-engine packages can cause Office installation conflicts. Installing ACE may also fail to help if the application is hard-coded to Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may quarantine a damaged, altered, or incorrectly identified DLL.

Windows Security

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry involving msjet40.dll.
  5. Expand the entry and inspect its path and details.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • The file is identified as the genuine Microsoft file.
  • The originating application is trusted.
  • The file is digitally signed or otherwise verified.
  • The quarantine event clearly matches the application failure.

Do not restore a suspicious file simply because a program refuses to start. Update Microsoft Defender or your security product, run a full scan, and consider an offline scan if malware is suspected.

After restoring a verified file, repair or reinstall the application. If the file was part of Windows, use DISM and SFC rather than keeping an unverified replacement.

Fix 6: Check for disk or system damage

If several files disappeared, applications began failing together, or Windows reports disk errors, check the system rather than focusing only on msjet40.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Save important work and back up important files.
  2. Open Windows Security.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Choose Scan options.
  5. Run a Full scan.
  6. If malware is suspected, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan.

You can also check drive health through the manufacturer’s supported utility or Windows’ storage diagnostics. Do not use System Restore as a guaranteed DLL recovery method. It may not restore one particular file and can remove applications or updates installed after the restore point.

Use System Restore only when:

  • The failure clearly began after a known system change.
  • A suitable restore point exists.
  • You understand which applications and updates may be removed.

Fix 7: Do not treat this as a driver problem

msjet40.dll is a database-engine library, not a hardware driver. Updating graphics, printer, chipset, or network drivers is generally unrelated to this error.

Device Manager is still useful when the application error is accompanied by a separate hardware warning:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Look for yellow warning icons.
  4. Expand the relevant device category.
  5. Right-click a device and select Update driver.
  6. Prefer Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s supported driver.

Do not update drivers merely because msjet40.dll is missing. When a machine has many stale drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify them, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it will not replace the application-specific Jet repair this error usually needs.

Should you run regsvr32 msjet40.dll

Usually, no.

regsvr32 is for self-registering DLLs and COM components that export DllRegisterServer. The Jet core DLL is not normally repaired by manually registering it. Running:

regsvr32 msjet40.dll

can produce a DllRegisterServer entry-point error and does not restore missing Jet dependencies.

Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor or Microsoft specifically identifies a particular self-registering component and gives the matching command. Do not substitute it for application repair, DISM, or SFC. Microsoft explains this behavior in its regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.

What not to do

Do not download the DLL from a random DLL site

A manually downloaded file may be:

  • Modified or malicious.
  • The wrong architecture.
  • From the wrong Windows release.
  • An outdated servicing level.
  • Missing related Jet components.
  • Unsigned or impossible to verify.

It may also hide the actual problem by placing a DLL in the application folder while Windows remains damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the original application installer, Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or Microsoft’s official Access documentation instead.

Do not copy the file into System32

On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit system directory. Copying an x86 Jet file there can create a new architecture mismatch and interfere with Windows servicing.

Do not install a random old Jet service pack

Legacy Jet installers may not match the Windows release or application. Check the software vendor’s supported installation media and compatibility instructions first. Do not replace a current protected file with an older copy.

Advanced diagnosis when the repair fails

If the application still fails after reinstalling it and repairing Windows, identify the actual executable and loading path.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Useful places to check include:

  • Event Viewer: right-click Start, select Event Viewer, then inspect Windows Logs > Application.
  • The application’s installer log.
  • The application’s own error log.
  • Process Monitor, used carefully to identify which executable attempts to load msjet40.dll and from which path.

The visible error may name msjet40.dll even when another associated Jet file is the actual failure. Related components include msjetoledb40.dll, msjtes40.dll, msjint40.dll, msjter40.dll, and msrd2x40.dll.

If a legacy program is incompatible with modern Windows, the correct answer may be a newer vendor-supported version or a controlled compatibility environment. Having the correct DLL present does not guarantee that the application remains compatible with current Windows security and database behavior.

Developer note: migrating away from Jet 4.0

For developers maintaining an old application, do not treat copying msjet40.dll as a long-term deployment strategy.

First identify whether the application uses DAO, Jet OLE DB, Access .mdb files, or another interface. Then test a supported migration to ACE or another database engine, paying attention to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 32-bit and 64-bit process architecture.
  • Connection strings and provider names.
  • Database locking and multi-user behavior.
  • Deployment and update requirements.
  • Compatibility with current Office and Windows installations.

ACE may be appropriate for an application designed for it, but it is not automatically interchangeable with Jet 4.0.

FAQ

Is msjet40.dll legitimate?

Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft Jet 4.0 database-engine file published by Microsoft. Its legitimacy does not make every downloaded copy safe, so verify the source and signature.

Is it part of Windows or Microsoft Access?

It is associated with Microsoft Jet and can be present as a Windows-protected legacy data-access component. Older Access and third-party applications may also install or depend on Jet components.

Why is a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows?

Windows supports 32-bit applications through its compatibility environment. The documented Jet file is x86, so it is commonly associated with SysWOW64 rather than native 64-bit System32.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Access Runtime restore msjet40.dll?

Not necessarily. Microsoft 365 Access Runtime installs ACE components. It may help an application that requires ACE, but it is not a universal replacement for Jet 4.0.

Can I fix it with regsvr32?

Normally no. regsvr32 is not the standard repair for the Jet core DLL and may return a missing DllRegisterServer error.

What if the file is quarantined?

Review the quarantine entry and verify the file, publisher, path, and application. Restore it only when it is confirmed genuine and the application is trusted, then update security software and run a full scan.

What if the error remains after SFC and DISM?

Repair or reinstall the application, confirm its x86 or x64 requirements, and inspect its event or installer logs. If several dependencies fail, investigate disk damage or broader Windows corruption.
