Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, write down:
- The exact program or game that reports
mskeyprotcli.dll - Whether the error appears at launch, after an update, or during a particular action
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The exact message, such as “not found,” “missing,” or “specified module could not be found”
- Whether

mskeyprotcli.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called Windows Client Key Protection Provider. If an application reports that mskeyprotcli.dll is missing, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What mskeyprotcli.dll does
Microsoft documents the Client Key Protection provider as part of Windows’ cryptographic protection-provider system. It handles protection descriptors beginning with WEBCREDENTIALS, which allow protected content to be tied to web credentials. See Microsoft’s documentation for Windows protection providers and NCryptCreateProtectionDescriptor.
The file normally belongs in these Windows directories:
C:WindowsSystem32mskeyprotcli.dllfor the native Windows architectureC:WindowsSysWOW64mskeyprotcli.dllfor 32-bit components on 64-bit Windows
An application may mention the file even though it did not ship it. Programs can call Windows cryptographic functions, and Windows then loads the required system provider on the program’s behalf. Therefore, an error shown by one game or application can still indicate a damaged or quarantined Windows file.

The file is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, device driver, or ordinary application plug-in. Installing those packages solely because this filename appears is unlikely to repair the problem.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the file is absent, corrupted, or rejected by Windows.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides the source files that System File Checker may need.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, open an administrator Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer.
A successful result usually says that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them, or that it did not find any integrity violations. Try the affected application again after restarting.
Outbyte PC Repair can show what is wrong when you are tired of hunting through repair logs and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed. Its free scan identifies issues, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows’ built-in commands remain the primary fix.
If SFC cannot repair the file
Run DISM again, restart, and repeat sfc /scannow. If Windows Update cannot provide the required repair files, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a repair source that closely matches your installed Windows edition and build. Do not use an unrelated Windows version.
If SFC continues to report unrepaired files, proceed to Windows Update repair or an in-place Windows repair later in this guide. Do not download mskeyprotcli.dll manually.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Defender or another security product may have removed the file. A familiar filename alone is not proof that a quarantined copy is safe.
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
mskeyprotcli.dll. - Open the detection details.
- Check the original path, detection name, and file information.
Restore the file only if the original location was the appropriate Windows system directory and the file can be verified as Microsoft-signed. If Windows Security provides Restore and, separately, Allow on device, use those actions only after confirming that the detection is a false positive.

Do not disable protection simply to make the application start. Protection History retains events for a limited period, so an older quarantine may no longer appear.
After a verified restoration, restart Windows and run DISM followed by SFC. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection instead of repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 3: Confirm the path and digital signature
A legitimate Windows copy should normally be in System32 or, on 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit copy should be in SysWOW64.

To inspect a file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Search for
mskeyprotcli.dll. - If you are using 64-bit Windows, also check
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
A file outside the Windows directories is not automatically malware, but it should be treated as potentially unrelated until verified. A missing Microsoft signature, suspicious location, or unusual metadata warrants a full security scan. Do not overwrite a suspicious file with one downloaded from the internet.

For a command-line check, Microsoft Sysinternals tools can verify signatures, but the basic Properties check is sufficient for an initial review.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If Windows repair succeeds but only one program still fails, the program’s own installation may be damaged. This is especially likely when the error began after an interrupted update or when other Windows programs work normally.
Use the program’s official repair route:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove local app data.
For a desktop program without those options:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer offers.
- Reinstall using the developer’s official installer.
For games, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair function. Reinstalling the application is not a substitute for repairing Windows when several applications show the same error, but it is the correct secondary fix when only one program remains affected.
Fix 5: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or incomplete update can leave the component store or protected files inconsistent.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check for updates again after the restart.
On supported Windows 11 installations, Microsoft may show Settings → System → Recovery → Fix problems using Windows Update → Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Follow the on-screen instructions if that option is available.
Fix 6: Check architecture and dependent modules
Do not swap the copies between the two Windows directories.

On 64-bit Windows:
System32contains native 64-bit system files.SysWOW64contains 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications.
A 32-bit program normally needs the 32-bit Windows component, while a 64-bit program needs the native component. Windows servicing tools should restore the correct copies for the installed build.
The message “specified module could not be found” does not always mean that mskeyprotcli.dll itself is missing. It can mean that a dependency cannot load, the application has the wrong architecture, or the file is damaged.

- Update or repair the program from its official installer.
- Check Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application for loader errors.
- Use a reputable dependency-analysis tool to identify the missing dependent module.
- Record the executable name, application version, Windows build, and exact error text before contacting the application developer.
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit application folder or the reverse.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
mskeyprotcli.dll is not itself a driver. Device Manager and driver updates are relevant only if the error started alongside a hardware, security-device, storage, or system update problem.
Check for driver problems as follows:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories relevant to the failing program.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of identifying which of dozens of drivers is stale; its free scan shows the detected driver issues, while installation is handled by the full version. Use it only as an optional convenience, and obtain hardware-critical drivers from the manufacturer when possible.

If the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, or system change, System Restore may be appropriate.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings without normally affecting personal files. It does not replace a backup, and it will not help if no suitable restore point exists. Microsoft describes the available recovery choices in its Windows recovery options.
Fix 9: Perform an in-place Windows repair
Use this only after DISM, SFC, Windows Update, quarantine checks, and application repair have failed.

Do not run:
regsvr32 mskeyprotcli.dll
regsvr32 registers COM DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose repair command, and this provider is not identified as a routine COM registration target. Microsoft explains the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
Also avoid DLL download sites and random copies from forums or application folders. A replacement may have the wrong Windows build, architecture, signature, dependencies, or hidden malware, and it does not repair the underlying component store. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the affected program’s official installer, or Microsoft installation media instead.
FAQ
Is mskeyprotcli.dll safe?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. Verify its location and Microsoft digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone.
Is it part of Windows 10 and Windows 11?
It is supplied through Windows protection-provider functionality. The correct file depends on the installed Windows build, servicing state, architecture, and calling program.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not merely because this filename appears. There is no evidence that mskeyprotcli.dll belongs to those redistributables.
Why does one application mention a Windows DLL?
The application may call a Windows cryptographic function that loads the provider. The visible error can therefore reflect Windows corruption, quarantine, a missing dependency, or application damage.
What if the file exists but the program still fails?
Check the application’s architecture, repair the application, inspect Event Viewer, and investigate dependent modules. “Specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency rather than the named file.
What information should I provide for further support?
Record the exact error, affected executable, application version, Windows version and build, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, the file’s full path, and the result of DISM and SFC.
