msndui.dll errors usually appear as “This application failed to start because msndui.dll was not found” or “The program can’t start because msndui.dll is missing from your computer.” The file belongs to the obsolete Microsoft Network software family, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the old MSN program that is requesting it, not to download an isolated DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what happened:
- The error names an old MSN application: Repair or reinstall that application first.
- The error appeared after antivirus activity: Check Microsoft Defender’s Protection history and quarantine records.
- The error appears at Windows startup, but you no longer use MSN: Uninstall the leftover MSN component and remove its startup entry.
- Several unrelated Windows features are failing: Run DISM, then System File Checker.
- The program is needed but will not run on Windows 10 or 11: Reinstall it, then test its compatibility settings.
- You found
msndui.dllin Downloads, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory: Treat it as suspicious and scan the computer rather than copying it into a Windows folder.
What is msndui.dll
msndui.dll is associated with The Microsoft Network and has the description Microsoft Network Desktop UI Handlers. It was published by Microsoft Corporation as part of old MSN and Microsoft Network software.
This is a legacy 32-bit application DLL. It is not a modern Windows system component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET component. Historical installations placed it in an application directory rather than normally in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Older Microsoft Network software may have stored the file in a path similar to:

Some MSN Connection Center installations also listed it below an MSN application directory. That does not prove every copy came from that exact product, but it confirms the connection with old MSN software.
The exact error wording varies by Windows version and by the program displaying the message. Other examples include:
The file msndui.dll is missing or corrupted.
A required component is missing: msndui.dll. Please install the application again.
Error loading msndui.dll. The specified module could not be found.
“Specified module could not be found” can mean that msndui.dll is missing, or that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. Reinstalling the complete parent application is safer than replacing individual dependencies.

Read the title bar and full message. It may identify an MSN application, connection center, launcher, or another old program. Write down the executable name if it appears.
Check the startup entry
If the message appears immediately after signing in:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for an MSN, Microsoft Network, connection, dial-up, or similarly named entry.
- Right-click a likely entry and select Open file location, if available.
- Record the folder and executable name. Do not delete the file yet.
You can also inspect the program list:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for MSN, Microsoft Network, MSN Explorer, MSN Internet Access, or MSN Connection Center.
For classic desktop software, open Control Panel, select Programs, then Programs and Features.
Inspect the event record
If the error disappears too quickly:
- Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look around the time of the failure.
- Open relevant entries and note the application name, faulting module, and path.
The most useful information is the exact error, requesting executable, full DLL path, Windows version, and what happened immediately before the failure.

Fix 1: Repair the old MSN application
Repair is the least disruptive option when the program is still installed.
Repair from Windows Settings
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the MSN or Microsoft Network program.
- Select its three-dot menu in Windows 11, or select the program in Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
Not every desktop program provides a Repair button. If repair completes successfully, restart Windows and open the program again.
Repair from Control Panel
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the old MSN or Microsoft Network program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
A successful repair should restore the application’s own copy of msndui.dll to its expected folder. It should not require copying the file to System32.
Fix 2: Reinstall the complete parent program
If Repair is unavailable or does not restore the file, reinstall the complete program.
- Save any information the old program still contains.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Uninstall the MSN-related application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it only from its original Microsoft installation media, an installer you already trust, or another legitimate source provided by the software owner.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the program before restoring optional add-ons.
There is no current standalone Microsoft redistributable for msndui.dll identified for modern Windows. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is therefore not a documented repair for this particular file.
If the old application cannot be obtained from a trustworthy source, do not substitute a DLL from a download site. The practical solution may be uninstalling the obsolete software and using a supported replacement.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Defender or another antivirus product may have removed the file. Do not immediately restore it. First confirm that the detection came from the installed MSN program and that the program itself is trusted.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to
msndui.dll. - Review the detected file path, publisher, detection name, and action taken.
- If the path belongs to the expected MSN installation and the parent program is trusted, review the available restore or allow action.
- If the path is in Downloads, a temporary directory, or an unrelated program folder, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
Restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. If the file is legitimate but repeatedly removed, reinstall the complete parent application and obtain an antivirus-supported determination before creating any exclusion.

Fix 4: Remove an obsolete startup reference
A missing DLL message at startup often means the old program was only partly removed.
First uninstall the remaining application:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for MSN or Microsoft Network software.
- Select the program and choose Uninstall.
If it is not listed:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Remove any remaining MSN-related entry.
Then check startup items:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Right-click the obsolete MSN entry.
- Select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete random registry values or files to silence the message. If a stale entry remains after a normal uninstall, back up important data and use the original uninstaller or Microsoft-supported Windows recovery options rather than guessing at registry locations.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are appropriate when Windows itself is damaged, not as a guaranteed way to restore an application-private legacy DLL.
Use them when multiple unrelated programs fail, Windows Update is malfunctioning, or other protected Windows files are also reporting errors.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the original application.
Microsoft documents DISM and System File Checker in this order because DISM repairs the component source that SFC may use.
Running these commands repeatedly without identifying what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while its full version performs repairs; it is optional, and reinstalling the old MSN program remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing DLL.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run it once more. If Windows has broader problems, use Windows Update or System Restore rather than copying msndui.dll into a system directory.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help if the error began after a recent installation, update, cleanup operation, or partial uninstall.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system settings, files, drivers, and installed programs affected by the restore point. It does not normally remove personal files, but review the affected-program list before proceeding.

If the error started after a Windows update, first check Settings > Windows Update. On Windows 11, select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. On Windows 10, select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Fix 7: Address compatibility on Windows 10 or 11
Even if reinstalling restores msndui.dll, the old application may still fail because its installer, networking components, or other dependencies are incompatible with current Windows.
Try the built-in compatibility setting:
- Locate the application’s executable.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program.
Run the compatibility troubleshooter only if needed, and avoid running an old Internet-access program with unnecessary administrator privileges.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The historical DLL is 32-bit. A 64-bit replacement is not equivalent, and moving files between System32 and SysWOW64 is not a general repair method. Windows uses those directories for different system architectures, so copying a legacy application DLL into either directory can create conflicts.
Drivers and Windows Features
Device Manager and Windows Features are not normal fixes for msndui.dll. The file is not identified as a current hardware driver, optional Windows feature, or modern runtime component.
If the failure began immediately after a hardware driver or Windows update, check the relevant driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the driver date and provider.
- Use Roll Back Driver only if the button is available and the problem clearly followed that update.
- Otherwise select Update Driver and use a driver from the hardware manufacturer.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which versions need attention, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the MSN application that owns msndui.dll.
Do not enable or disable random items in Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off for this error. That panel does not provide a known msndui.dll package.
Why you should not download or register the DLL
Avoid downloading msndui.dll from random DLL websites. A copied file can contain malware, target the wrong architecture, have an incompatible version, or omit dependencies that the original program also requires.

Manual copying is only defensible when restoring the exact file from a known-good backup or the original installer for the same parent application. Even then, restore it to the application’s original directory, not automatically to System32, SysWOW64, or an unrelated program folder.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation applies to DLLs that implement and export DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that msndui.dll is a self-registering COM DLL. Running a command such as this may simply produce a “DllRegisterServer was not found” error:
regsvr32 msndui.dll
Registration does not restore a missing file, repair its dependencies, or make obsolete MSN software compatible with modern Windows.
If the problem remains
Collect these details before seeking further help:
- The complete error text
- The executable that displays it
- The full path Windows reports for
msndui.dll - Whether the file is missing, quarantined, or present
- Your Windows 10 or Windows 11 version
- Whether the error occurs at startup or only when launching a program
- The installation, uninstall, antivirus detection, update, or cleanup event immediately before the failure
If the requesting program is no longer needed, uninstall it and disable its leftover startup entry. If it is essential but cannot be reinstalled from a trusted source, replace it with supported software rather than reconstructing its DLL collection manually.
FAQ
Is msndui.dll part of Windows?
It is Microsoft-associated, but it belongs to old Microsoft Network software rather than being a normal current Windows system DLL.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not specifically for this file. Those packages are not identified as the source of msndui.dll. Repair or reinstall the old MSN application first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan I copy msndui.dll into System32?
No. The historical file is a 32-bit application DLL, and copying it into a Windows system folder can cause architecture and version problems.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
The message may refer to a missing dependency, an invalid copy, or an incompatible application. Reinstall the complete parent program instead of replacing dependencies individually.
Will SFC restore msndui.dll?
Usually not if the file belonged privately to an old application. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. Use it when other Windows components are also failing.
Is the file malware?
The name alone does not prove that. Verify its path, publisher, parent application, and antivirus result. A copy in an unexpected folder should be scanned and not trusted merely because its filename matches.
