Click-to-Run installations can store the file inside an Office virtualized rootVFS path instead. It is not normally supposed to be in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the folder beside a game.
Microsoft’s Office 2016 records show historical examples such as version 16.0.4351.1000 in KB3114705 and version 16.0.5435.1001 in KB5002522. These are evidence of the component and its architecture variants, not files to download manually.

What the error messages mean
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because mso30win32client.dll is missing from your computer.”
mso30win32client.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error- Error status
0xc000012f - “Microsoft Office 2016 component has stopped working”
- Event Viewer Event ID 1000 naming

A missing-file message means Office cannot find the component it expects. A “bad image” message usually points to corruption, an incompatible binary, or an incomplete update. If Event Viewer names the DLL as the faulting module, that only identifies where the crash surfaced. The original cause could still be an Office update, an add-in, antivirus interference, or a damaged user configuration.
The most common triggers are an Office update, an interrupted reinstall, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, migration between 32-bit and 64-bit Office, or a newly installed add-in.
Fix 1: Run Office Quick Repair, then Online Repair
Office repair is the safest and most likely solution because it restores the correct shared files for the installed edition, build, and architecture.
From Windows Settings
- Close every Office application.
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Office, Microsoft 365, or the installed Office product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Quick Repair.
- Click Repair and allow the process to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Office application that previously failed.
Quick Repair is usually the right first pass. It changes less and may complete without downloading the full Office installation.
If the error remains:
- Return to Start > Installed apps.
- Select the Office product and choose Modify.
- Select Online Repair.
- Click Repair.
- Keep the computer connected to the internet until the process completes.
- Restart Windows and test Office again.
Online Repair is more comprehensive. It can replace damaged shared components and rebuild more of the Office installation.
From Control Panel
For older Office installers:
- Press Windows-R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select Microsoft Office.
- Click Change.
- Choose Quick Repair first.
- If necessary, repeat the process and select Online Repair.
If repair completes but the same file is still missing, do not copy a DLL into a system folder. Continue with the architecture and installation-type checks below.
Fix 2: Update Office through its own updater
A failed or outdated Office servicing state can leave a shared component mismatched with the rest of the installation.

If any Office program opens:
- Open Word, Excel, or another Office application.
- Select File > Account.
- Select Update Options.
- Click Update Now.
- Let Office download and install available updates.
- Restart Windows after the update finishes.
An MSI-based Office installation and a Click-to-Run installation use different servicing systems. Microsoft’s Office MSI update documentation explains the distinction. Do not apply an MSI patch manually to Click-to-Run Office, and do not assume a package for one Office architecture belongs on the other.
If Office will not open at all, run Online Repair first. For MSI installations, use only the matching Microsoft update package for the installed Office edition and architecture.
Fix 3: Confirm Office architecture and installation type
A 64-bit version of Windows can run either 32-bit or 64-bit Office. The Office architecture controls which mso30win32client.dll variant is correct.
To check from an Office application:
- Open Word or Excel if possible.
- Select File > Account.
- Select About Word or About Excel.
- Read the version line. It normally identifies whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You may also see whether the installation is Click-to-Run in the account or product information. Installed programs can also reveal whether multiple Office editions are present.

Repair the existing installation rather than replacing one file. If repair cannot resolve the mismatch, uninstall the conflicting Office products and reinstall one supported architecture.
Fix 4: Reinstall Office from Microsoft
Use a clean reinstall when Quick Repair and Online Repair fail, or when the Office installation is visibly incomplete.
- Save documents and close Office.
- Use Microsoft’s Office installation and reinstall page.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the license, or use the licensed installation media.
- If normal removal fails, follow Microsoft’s Office installation troubleshooting guidance.
- Restart Windows after removal.
- Install Office again using the same architecture unless you deliberately need to change it.
- Open an Office application and allow it to finish first-run setup.
- Test the application that reported the DLL error.
Reinstalling Office is the definitive fix when the shared component, servicing database, or installation source is damaged.

Fix 5: Test Office in Safe Mode
If the application opens in Safe Mode, the DLL may only be where the crash becomes visible. An add-in, startup template, or user configuration can be triggering the failure.
Press Windows-R, enter the appropriate command, and press Enter:
winword /safe
excel /safe
outlook /safe
visio /safe
If the application opens:
- Select File > Options.
- Select Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins.
- Click Go.
- Clear the checkboxes for enabled add-ins.
- Restart Office normally.
- Re-enable add-ins one at a time until the problem returns.
Remove or update the add-in that causes the crash. Also check application startup folders, templates, and profile configuration if disabling COM add-ins does not change the behavior.
Safe Mode working does not prove that mso30win32client.dll is defective. It indicates that normal startup is loading something additional.
Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine an Office component after an update or after detecting a suspicious file state.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
mso30win32client.dllor an Office folder. - Check the file path, detection details, and time of the event.
Do not blindly restore the file. Restore or allow it only when the path is clearly inside the legitimate Office installation, the Office installation is trusted, and the file’s signature and context are consistent. If there is any doubt, run Office Online Repair or reinstall Office instead. Microsoft explains this workflow in its Protection History guidance.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components
This is a secondary step because mso30win32client.dll belongs to Office, not the Windows inbox component store. It is useful when several unrelated applications are also failing or Windows reports broader corruption.

- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Office again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its system file checker instructions. These commands repair Windows components. They do not guarantee restoration of an Office-owned DLL.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds, while repair actions are handled by the full version, but repairing or reinstalling Office remains the definitive fix for this Office component.

Driver reinstall is not a standard fix for a missing Office DLL. Consider it only when the crash happens consistently while using a display, printer, scanner, graphics, or security add-in.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing device, such as Display adapters, Printers, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider and version.
- Use the device manufacturer’s official support channel for the correct driver.
- Restart Windows and test Office again.
Avoid randomly uninstalling working hardware drivers. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale drivers, with scanning available before driver installation through the full version, but update drivers only when the crash is tied to that hardware or its Office add-in.
Windows Features are not a repair path for this file. Enabling .NET, DirectX components, or Visual C++ packages does not replace an Office shared DLL, and those runtimes should not be the first response.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the failure began immediately after an update, driver installation, security-software change, or Office change, a restore point may help.
- Press Windows-R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system settings, installed programs, and drivers, but it does not normally remove personal files. Microsoft documents the process in its System Restore guidance.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
A downloaded copy can contain malware, belong to the wrong Office build, use the wrong architecture, or leave the underlying installation damage untouched. It can also create a servicing mismatch that disappears during the next Office update.
Use Microsoft Office repair, Microsoft’s Office reinstall process, or the licensed installation media associated with the product.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are for Windows components and do not turn an Office installation into a healthy installation. Copying an x86 file into a 64-bit location, or the reverse, can produce more confusing loader errors.

Do not run regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no public Microsoft evidence that mso30win32client.dll is a self-registering COM server. Registering it is normally irrelevant and may only add another error.

Office 2016 support ended on October 14, 2025. The software may continue to run, but Microsoft no longer promises normal bug or security fixes for it. Repair or reinstall it when necessary, and consider a supported Office release for long-term use.
