mso99lwin32client.dll Errors: Trace and Repair Office Safely

mso99lwin32client.dll is a Microsoft Office component, not a Windows system DLL. If Windows says this file is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Office installation that owns it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

A third-party application may report the error because it automates Office, embeds Office functionality, or depends on an Office installation. Repair the host application only after checking Office itself.

What mso99lwin32client.dll is

Microsoft Office 2016 update manifests list mso99lwin32client.dll in separate x86 and x64 packages. That means the file can be present in either 32-bit or 64-bit Office, but the copy must match the Office process loading it. Microsoft’s update records show more than one serviced version, so there is no single universal file version or size to download.

A Microsoft crash report shows the file under:

C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedOffice16mso99Lwin32client.dll

That is evidence of a normal Office installation path, not a guarantee that every Office edition uses it. Microsoft 365 Click-to-Run, Office 2016, volume-license installations, and standalone Office products can use different layouts.

This file is not established as part of:

  • Windows System32 or SysWOW64
  • Visual C++ Redistributable
  • DirectX
  • .NET

Do not start by reinstalling those runtimes unless the complete error also names a separate dependency belonging to one of them.

Understand the exact error

The wording helps identify what failed:

  • “The program can’t start because mso99lwin32client.dll is missing” usually means the loader could not find the file in the expected Office installation.
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because mso99lwin32client.dll was not found” has the same general implication.
  • “The specified module could not be found” can mean the named DLL is missing, but it can also mean a dependency required by that DLL is missing.
  • “The file is not designed to run on Windows” or a bad-image error commonly points to corruption or an architecture mismatch.
  • An Event Viewer entry naming the DLL as the faulting module does not prove that Office is corrupt. The file may simply be where a compatibility problem or access violation surfaced.

Record the exact wording before changing anything. Also note which application displays it. That application may be the real damaged component.

Fix 1: Repair Office

Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes

This is the safest and most likely fix for a missing or damaged Office DLL.

  1. Save your work and close Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and any application that uses Office.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  5. Search for Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or Office 2016.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside the installation.
  7. Choose Modify.
  8. Select Quick Repair.
  9. Select Repair and follow the prompts.
  10. Restart Windows.
  11. Test the application that produced the error.

Quick Repair replaces or repairs damaged Office components without requiring a complete download. If the error remains, repeat the process and select Online Repair instead. Microsoft describes Online Repair as the more complete repair option, and it may take longer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell whether repair worked

Open the affected Office application first, then launch the third-party program that showed the error. Repair succeeded if the program starts without the DLL message and the same operation that previously failed now works.

If Office repair completes but the third-party program still crashes, the DLL may only be the reported faulting module. Continue with the host-application checks below rather than repeatedly repairing Office.

Fix 2: Update Office

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

An incomplete or old Office update can leave files out of sync.

If any Office application opens:

  1. Open Word or Excel.
  2. Select File.
  3. Select Account.
  4. Under Product Information, select Update Options.
  5. Select Update Now.
  6. Wait for the update process to finish.
  7. Restart Windows and test again.

You can also use Windows Update:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Advanced options.
  4. Turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products if that option is available.
  5. Return to Windows Update.
  6. Select Check for updates.
  7. Install available Office-related updates and restart.

Use Microsoft’s Office update instructions if the menus differ on your installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Office 2016 remains unstable after updating, remember that Microsoft ended Office 2016 support on October 14, 2025. Repair may restore the installation, but moving to a supported Office release may be the more reliable long-term choice where licensing permits.

Fix 3: Reinstall the correct Office edition

Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes

Use this step when repair fails, Office is only partially installed, or the product was removed during an unsuccessful reinstall.

Before uninstalling, confirm that you have the Microsoft account or product key used to activate Office.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the Office installation.
  3. Select the three-dot menu.
  4. Select Uninstall.
  5. Restart Windows when prompted.
  6. Use Microsoft’s official Office installation and reinstallation page.
  7. Sign in with the original account, or enter the product key when requested.
  8. Select the required Office product.
  9. Choose the correct 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  10. Complete installation and restart Windows.
  11. Apply Office updates before testing the affected application.

Do not install an isolated copy of mso99lwin32client.dll into the application directory. The Office installer must place the file together with its related files and dependencies.

Fix 4: Check Office bitness and application compatibility

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

Office architecture is separate from the architecture of Windows. A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit Office, and the correct DLL must match the Office process using it.

To check Office bitness:

  1. Open Word or Excel.
  2. Select File > Account.
  3. Select About Word or About Excel.
  4. Read the version line. It will identify 32-bit or 64-bit Office.

If Office will not open, check the installed product information in Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or use the account and installation records associated with your Office product.

Microsoft treats 32-bit and 64-bit Office as separate installations. Switching architecture normally requires uninstalling the current version before installing the other one. Do not copy an x86 DLL into a 64-bit Office installation, or an x64 DLL into a 32-bit installation.

If only one third-party application fails, check whether that application supports the Office architecture you installed. Repair or reinstall the application from its own official installer after Office is working.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

Security software may quarantine an Office file after an update or a false positive.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry involving mso99lwin32client.dll or the Office installation.
  5. Record the detection name and file path.
  6. Run a current full scan before restoring anything.

Restore the file only if you can verify that it came from the legitimate Office installation and the security decision is a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can cause it to be detected again. Do not disable antivirus protection simply to make the error disappear. If the detection returns, leave the file quarantined and repair or reinstall Office from Microsoft instead.

Fix 6: Repair the application that reports the error

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

If Office opens normally but one program still fails, repair that program next.

  1. Close the program.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected application.
  4. Select its three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Modify, Repair, or Advanced options, depending on the installer.
  6. Run its official repair option.
  7. If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
  8. If the program has Verify files, Repair files, or a similar launcher option, use that feature.
  9. Restart Windows and test again.

A crash naming mso99lwin32client.dll is not necessarily an Office repair problem. One Microsoft Q&A report identifies this DLL as a faulting module alongside an access-violation crash in a custom application. In that situation, the application itself, an add-in, or an incompatibility may be responsible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Temporarily disable nonessential Office add-ins to test:

  1. Open Word or Excel.
  2. Select File > Options > Add-ins.
  3. At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins.
  4. Select Go.
  5. Clear nonessential add-ins.
  6. Restart Office and test the affected program.

If the program still crashes, contact its vendor with the diagnostic information listed below.

Fix 7: Repair broader Windows components

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes

SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally restore an Office-owned DLL, so use them after Office repair rather than instead of it.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the affected application again.

If DISM reports that it cannot complete, restart Windows and run the command again before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and retest. If both commands report no integrity violations, return to Office and application repair rather than repeating them.

Running these checks manually means interpreting logs and determining what changed between runs. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows what it identifies, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling or repairing Office remains the definitive fix for this Office-owned file.

Fix 8: Review drivers only when the evidence points there

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes

Drivers are not the primary explanation for a missing Office DLL. Consider them when the failure began after a graphics, printer, security, or hardware change, or when Event Viewer shows a broader application or device failure.

To inspect devices:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories related to the failing application, such as Display adapters, Printers, or Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
  6. Review the Device status and Driver tabs.
  7. Use Update driver only with a driver obtained from the device manufacturer or Windows Update.
  8. Restart Windows and test.

Do not use Device Manager to search for mso99lwin32client.dll; it is not a device driver.

If manually checking several vendors and driver versions is slowing the diagnosis, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and identify available updates, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and updating a driver will not replace a missing Office component.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no public evidence that this Office core component is intended for manual registration.

Running commands such as these is therefore not a reliable fix:

regsvr32 mso99lwin32client.dll
regsvr32 /u mso99lwin32client.dll

They may produce an error or create the impression that the problem was repaired when it was not. Use Office Repair or the official Office installer instead.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Do not download mso99lwin32client.dll from a DLL archive, forum, file mirror, or search result. An isolated file may contain malware, belong to the wrong Office build, use the wrong architecture, or require other missing files. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder can also create DLL search-order conflicts.

The safe sources are:

  • Office Repair through Windows Settings
  • Microsoft Office Update
  • Microsoft’s official Office installation page
  • Your organization’s managed Office deployment system
  • The affected application’s official installer for its own files

Common causes and the appropriate response

Likely cause Appropriate response
Corrupt or incomplete Office installation Quick Repair, then Online Repair
Failed or old Office update Update Office and Windows
Office removed or partially uninstalled Reinstall the correct Office edition
Antivirus quarantine Verify the path and detection before taking action
x86/x64 mismatch Install the architecture required by the Office and host process
Damaged third-party application Repair or reinstall that application
Windows component corruption Run DISM, then SFC
Recent system change Consider System Restore
Application bug or incompatible add-in Disable add-ins and contact the application vendor

What to collect if the error continues

Before escalating, collect:

  • The exact error dialog text
  • The name and version of the application that fails
  • The full path shown for mso99lwin32client.dll
  • The Office product name and edition
  • Whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • The Windows 10 or Windows 11 version
  • Whether Quick Repair and Online Repair completed
  • Antivirus detection details, if any
  • Event Viewer details, including the faulting application, faulting module, and exception code

To check Event Viewer:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Open Windows Logs > Application.
  4. Find the error at the time of the crash.
  5. Copy the faulting application name, faulting module name, and exception code.

This information distinguishes a missing Office component from a dependency failure, architecture mismatch, or crash where Office is only the location at which the failure became visible.

FAQ

Is mso99lwin32client.dll a Windows file?

No. The available Microsoft update evidence identifies it as an Office component. It should not be treated as a normal System32 or SysWOW64 file.

Does installing Visual C++ fix it?

Not usually. The file is serviced as part of Office, not identified as a Visual C++ runtime. Install a Visual C++ package only when the application reports a separate Visual C++ DLL or dependency error.

Does the name mean the file is 32-bit?

No. Microsoft lists both x86 and x64 Office entries. The filename alone does not identify the architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy the DLL from another computer?

No. Office builds, architectures, and related dependencies may differ. Repair or reinstall Office from Microsoft.

What if Office repair succeeds but the program still crashes?

Repair or reinstall the application that reports the error, disable its Office add-ins, and inspect Event Viewer. A faulting-module entry does not prove that the Office DLL itself is defective.

Should I use System Restore?

Use it when the failure began immediately after a known installation, update, or driver change and a suitable restore point exists. It is a fallback, not the first repair for an Office DLL.
