“The program can’t start because thumbsup.dll is missing from your computer.” The thumbsup.dll error usually points to a damaged, incomplete, or mismatched SketchUp installation rather than a missing Windows system file.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list to jump to the situation that matches your error:

  • SketchUp will not start, or Windows says the file is missing: repair SketchUp first.
  • The error appeared during installation or repair: install the required Visual C++ and .NET prerequisites, restart Windows, then retry with the official installer.
  • The file disappeared after a security scan: check Windows Security Protection history and your antivirus quarantine.
  • You use an old Google SketchUp release: identify the exact release and architecture before replacing anything.
  • The file exists but Windows says “specified module could not be found”: a dependency may be missing, not thumbsup.dll itself.
  • The error says the DLL failed to register: use SketchUp Repair or reinstall. Do not begin with an unsupported regsvr32 command.
  • The problem started after an update, cleanup, or driver change: try System Restore after checking the installation.
  • Repair and reinstall both fail: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC, then retry SketchUp repair.

What thumbsup.dll is

thumbsup.dll is associated with SketchUp’s thumbnail shell extension. It is not a normal Windows component and should not normally be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Public file metadata reports an older 32-bit record numbered 8.0.14346.0, with a size of approximately 1.85 MB, associated with Google SketchUp. Other public metadata identifies a newer 64-bit record numbered 17.1.174.0, approximately 7.38 MB, associated with Trimble SketchUp. These records are useful for identifying an old or newer installation, but they are not a universal download recommendation or a current Trimble component manifest.

The correct file must come from the same SketchUp release that Windows is trying to launch. A 32-bit file cannot substitute for a 64-bit component, and a newer file may not work with an older Google SketchUp installation.

Fix 1: Repair SketchUp from Windows Settings

This is the safest and most likely solution.

  1. Close SketchUp and any file windows showing SketchUp thumbnails.
  2. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps on Windows 11. On some Windows 10 systems, select Apps & features.
  5. Find SketchUp in the list.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  7. Choose Modify.
  8. Approve the administrator prompt.
  9. Select Repair in the SketchUp setup window.
  10. Let the repair finish.
  11. Restart Windows.
  12. Launch SketchUp again.

A successful repair restores files belonging to that installation and updates the registration information used by Windows. Test both SketchUp startup and, if relevant, a folder containing SketchUp files whose thumbnails were not appearing.

If Modify or Repair is unavailable, download the installer for the same SketchUp generation from Trimble’s official SketchUp download area. Run the installer by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator, then choose Repair if the option appears.

Do not use a current installer to replace an unsupported legacy installation unless you intend to migrate to a newer release. Trimble currently lists SketchUp 2024 through 2026 as supported and identifies SketchUp 2023 and earlier as unsupported. Older installations may require preserving the original installer.

Fix 2: Identify the installed release and architecture

Before reinstalling a DLL or runtime, establish which SketchUp installation is failing.

  1. Open Settings with Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  3. Search for SketchUp.
  4. Note the displayed version and whether more than one SketchUp release is installed.
  5. Right-click the SketchUp shortcut and select Open file location.
  6. Right-click the shortcut in the resulting folder and select Properties.
  7. Check the Target field to see which installation directory it launches.
  8. Open that directory and look for thumbsup.dll.

Also check whether an old shortcut, file association, or startup entry points to a removed SketchUp folder. Uninstalling one release can leave another shortcut pointing at files that no longer exist.

The older Google SketchUp metadata is associated with a 32-bit build. Newer Trimble metadata includes a 64-bit build. Do not choose a file based only on the largest version number. Restore the component from the matching installer instead.

Fix 3: Restore the Visual C++ and .NET prerequisites

SketchUp installers depend on Windows components and Microsoft runtime packages. Trimble’s current installation guidance lists the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 and the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 as requirements, and its online installer can install missing prerequisites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s current supported Visual C++ package for Visual Studio 2017 and later provides separate x86, x64, and ARM64 installers. Match the package to the application:

  • A 32-bit SketchUp installation needs the x86 runtime, even on 64-bit Windows.
  • A 64-bit SketchUp installation needs the x64 runtime.
  • Installing x64 alone does not satisfy every 32-bit application.

To repair an installed Visual C++ package:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
  5. Open the menu beside the relevant package.
  6. Select Modify.
  7. Choose Repair.
  8. Restart Windows.

If the required package is absent, obtain the correct installer from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page. Install the architecture required by SketchUp, then run SketchUp Repair again.

For .NET, use the prerequisite specified by the SketchUp installer rather than guessing. Open Control Panel, select Programs, then Turn Windows features on or off. This screen may show older .NET features, but enabling .NET Framework 3.5 is not a substitute for every .NET Framework requirement. If the installer requests a particular .NET version, install that version through Microsoft’s official software channels, restart, and retry the SketchUp installation.

If the installer reports missing prerequisites again, use a fresh official SketchUp installer and run it as administrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may quarantine or delete a legitimate application file. This is especially important if thumbsup.dll existed before the error appeared.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open the Start menu and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections involving SketchUp or thumbsup.dll.
  5. Open a detection to inspect its path and details.

Only restore the file if the path belongs to the trusted SketchUp installation and you obtained that installation from legitimate official media. If the file was quarantined, restoring it may allow SketchUp to start, but repairing or reinstalling SketchUp is safer because it restores the complete set of files.

Do not broadly disable Defender or add an entire drive to antivirus exclusions. If the file is removed again after repair, check the logs for third-party antivirus software or an enterprise security policy. The recurring removal may be the real cause.

Fix 5: Reinstall SketchUp cleanly

Use this when Repair fails, the installation folder is badly damaged, or several SketchUp files are missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected SketchUp release.
  4. Select the three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Uninstall.
  6. Restart Windows when prompted.
  7. Download the matching official installer from Trimble.
  8. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
  9. Install the required prerequisites when the installer offers them.
  10. Complete the installation.
  11. Restart Windows.
  12. Test SketchUp before restoring custom extensions or plugins.

Avoid mixing installers from different SketchUp generations. If you are repairing an old Google SketchUp release, preserve its original installer and license information. A current Trimble installation is not a replacement for a legacy build when a project depends on that exact release.

If the online installer fails, use the official offline installer when Trimble provides one for the required release. Installation problems can result from missing prerequisites, pending Windows updates, permissions, or security software blocking the setup process.

Fix 6: Investigate a missing dependency

Windows can report that “the specified module could not be found” even when thumbsup.dll is visible in the SketchUp folder. In that case, Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL.

Do not replace the visible file blindly. Instead:

  1. Confirm that thumbsup.dll is in the folder for the failing SketchUp release.
  2. Check whether the Visual C++ runtime architecture matches SketchUp.
  3. Repair the Microsoft runtime packages.
  4. Confirm that the required .NET prerequisite is installed.
  5. Run SketchUp Repair.
  6. Check antivirus history for another file removed from the same folder.

This error can also result from a damaged installation directory, wrong-architecture files, or a failed update. Reinstalling the complete application is more reliable than assembling individual DLLs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

DISM and SFC are appropriate when Windows itself may be damaged or when installers repeatedly fail. They do not normally recreate a third-party SketchUp DLL.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to complete.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Retry SketchUp Repair or reinstall SketchUp.

DISM repairs the Windows image first, which is why it should precede SFC. SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the commands again only if Microsoft’s guidance indicates it is appropriate, then return to the SketchUp installer.

Repeating these commands will not substitute for restoring the correct application files.

Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; repair is performed by the full version, but it is not required, and reinstalling SketchUp remains the definitive fix for this application file.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change

If the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup operation, or other system change, System Restore may return the system to an earlier state.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Review the changes.
  8. Select Next, then Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not replace a correct SketchUp installer, and it may not be available. Use it when the timing strongly connects the error to a recent system change.

Should you update drivers

A normal display or chipset driver update is not the first fix for thumbsup.dll. However, if SketchUp started failing after a graphics driver change, or if Windows installation problems affect several applications, check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the graphics device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

You can also select Properties, open the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if the button is available and the problem began after that update.

Finding the correct driver manually can mean identifying the hardware, matching Windows architecture, and checking several release packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation is done by the full version, and it is optional. A driver update will not replace a missing SketchUp component when the installation itself is damaged.

Why you should not download thumbsup.dll

Do not download an isolated copy from a random DLL website and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or the SketchUp folder. That approach can provide:

  • Malware or a tampered binary.
  • The wrong SketchUp release.
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • A file with incompatible dependencies.
  • A misleading fix that leaves the installation damaged.

The safe sources are the official SketchUp installer from Trimble and Microsoft’s official prerequisite packages. Restore the complete application rather than selecting a DLL by filename.

Should you run regsvr32 thumbsup.dll

Not as a universal fix.

regsvr32 works only with DLLs that expose the registration entry points required by the command. A missing-DLL error usually means the file or one of its dependencies cannot be loaded, and registration will not repair a corrupt or wrong-architecture binary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because thumbsup.dll is described as a shell extension, registration may have been part of a particular SketchUp installer workflow. If SketchUp setup explicitly reports that registration failed and the file is present in the correct installation folder, use Repair or reinstall first. A manual command is appropriate only when a trusted, version-specific support instruction tells you exactly which copy to register.

Prevention and escalation

After the repair works:

  • Keep the working SketchUp installer.
  • Do not delete application files during disk cleanup.
  • Keep Windows Security history available when investigating recurring removals.
  • Avoid installing multiple incompatible SketchUp generations into the same custom folder.
  • Record the SketchUp release and installation path before uninstalling it.

If the error persists, record the exact message, SketchUp version, Windows version, full path shown for thumbsup.dll, whether the error occurs at startup or during thumbnail handling, and any antivirus detection. That information distinguishes a damaged installation from a missing dependency, architecture mismatch, or security-policy problem.

FAQ

Is thumbsup.dll a Windows file?

No. Available evidence identifies it with SketchUp’s thumbnail shell extension. It is not expected to be a standard file in the Windows system folders.

Which SketchUp versions use it?

Public metadata associates one 32-bit record with an older Google SketchUp release and another 64-bit record with a newer Trimble SketchUp release. The filename alone cannot identify every release that contains it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error mention thumbnails?

The component is described as a SketchUp Thumbnail Shell Extension. Thumbnail failures can indicate shell-extension registration trouble, while startup failures more often point to damaged files or missing dependencies.

Will SFC restore it?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not third-party SketchUp files. Use it only when Windows corruption may be interfering with installation or loading.

Is the x64 Visual C++ package enough?

Not necessarily. A 32-bit SketchUp installation needs the x86 runtime, even on 64-bit Windows.

What is the correct first step?

Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > SketchUp > Modify > Repair, restart Windows, and test the same SketchUp shortcut again.
