You may see “The program can’t start because msolui80.dll is missing from your computer,” “The code execution cannot proceed because msolui80.dll was not found,” or “Error loading msolui80.dll. The specified module could not be found.” The msolui80.dll error usually means that an older application has lost part of its Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services client installation.
The 60-second answer
msolui80.dll is a genuine Microsoft application DLL described as the Microsoft OLE DB provider for Analysis Services connection dialog 8.0. It belongs to the SQL Server 2000-era Analysis Services client stack, including PivotTable Services, rather than to Windows itself. Microsoft documents PivotTable Service as an Analysis Services client component in its SQL Server 2000 Setup documentation.
The safest repair is:
- Identify which executable is requesting the file.
- Repair or reinstall that application from its original installer or media.
- If it genuinely uses SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services, restore the matching client component and apply the Analysis Services service pack.
- Do not download a loose DLL or copy it into
System32orSysWOW64. - Use SFC and DISM only as secondary Windows diagnostics.
The filename alone cannot identify the exact application. It may be an old database, reporting, spreadsheet, business-intelligence, installer, or custom OLE DB program.
What is msolui80.dll?
The 80 in the filename identifies the 8.0 generation associated with SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services. Known copies are reported as 32-bit files with versions 8.0.0.382 and 8.0.0.2039, each approximately 0.22 MB. These file details are useful when checking an existing installation, but they are not a reason to obtain a replacement from an unverified source.

msolui80.dll is not a normal Windows system DLL. It should not normally be expected in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The Windows component store
A 32-bit application may instead have used the file from its own program directory or from a legacy SQL Server Analysis Services client installation. The correct location depends on the installer and the application’s design.
Microsoft’s current Analysis Services client libraries use newer provider generations. Installing a modern MSOLAP package is not a verified replacement for this SQL Server 2000-era file.
What the error messages mean
“msolui80.dll is missing” or “was not found”
The application cannot locate the DLL in the locations searched by Windows. The file may have been removed, quarantined, never installed, or left behind as a broken reference after another program was uninstalled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“The specified module could not be found”
This message does not always mean that msolui80.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load one of its dependencies.
Historical Analysis Services documentation identifies dependencies including msolap80.dll, msvbvm60.dll, and a sufficiently recent oleaut32.dll. A missing or incompatible dependency can therefore produce the same message. The practical response is to repair the complete parent application rather than replacing only one file.
“The module is not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”
This can indicate a damaged file, a mismatched architecture, an incompatible dependency, or an old component that cannot operate correctly in the current Windows environment. It does not prove that the file is malware or that downloading another copy will solve the issue.
Find the program that needs the DLL
Before changing Windows, identify the requesting program. This prevents you from repairing the wrong SQL or Office component.
Start with the complete error dialog
Write down:
- The full error text
- The executable name shown in the title bar or message
- What you clicked immediately before the error appeared
- Whether the error occurs at startup, during a report connection, or while opening a document
- The program’s installation path
If the dialog names an old reporting tool, spreadsheet add-in, database front end, or installer, that program is the first repair target.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows key, type Event Viewer, and open it.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- In the right pane, choose Find.
- Search for
msolui80.dll. - Review entries created at the time of the failure.
- Record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and Exception code, if shown.
Event Viewer may identify the executable even when the popup only reports a generic startup failure.
Inspect an existing copy
If a copy already exists:
- Open File Explorer.
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Record the File description, Product name, File version, and Original filename.
- Note the complete folder path.
A file with the expected Microsoft description and a plausible SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services version is useful evidence. It is not automatically safe merely because its name is correct.
Fix 1: Repair the application that requested the file
This is the most likely and safest fix.
Use Windows application repair
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The repair option preserves the program while restoring damaged files. Microsoft describes this general process in its guidance for fixing programs that cannot be installed or removed.
Recommended Free Tools
If the error disappears, the repair restored the required component. If no Repair option exists, use the application’s original installer.
Run the original installer
Look for the original setup media, deployment share, or installer supplied by the application vendor. Run it as an administrator:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or Change, if offered.
- Ensure the SQL Server Analysis Services client, PivotTable Services, OLE DB provider, or similar client feature is selected.
- Complete setup.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the original application.
Do not remove a working database engine merely because the error mentions Analysis Services. The missing item may be only a client feature.
If repair fails, uninstall and reinstall the parent application from trusted original media. Back up application data and configuration first. A complete reinstall is more reliable than manually replacing msolui80.dll, because it restores dependencies, registry settings, supporting providers, and the application’s expected directory structure.

Fix 2: Restore the SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services component
Use this path only when the affected program genuinely depends on SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services.

The relevant service pack package is:
SQL2000.AS-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE
This is the dedicated 32-bit Analysis Services package. It is different from:
SQL2000-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE, which targets SQL Server database components- The Itanium package, which targets a different architecture
Microsoft’s SQL Server 2000 SP4 record identifies the service-pack family, while the surviving SP4 readme documents Analysis Services scope and build information.
The original Microsoft download page is retired. Do not assume that an archived installer is authentic. Verify its provenance and hashes where available, and use the matching language and legacy operating-system environment described by the documentation.
Before servicing an old Analysis Services installation:
- Back up Analysis Services databases and repository files.
- Record the existing installation path.
- Record relevant connection settings.
- Confirm that the installer matches the 32-bit client environment.
- Test the application after installation.
SQL Server 2000 is obsolete, and its installers may fail on Windows 10 or Windows 11 because of unsupported operating-system behavior, legacy permissions, missing runtimes, or signing requirements. Microsoft does not provide a current supported download specifically confirmed to contain msolui80.dll.
If the original application is still required, a safer long-term arrangement may be to preserve it in a supported, isolated legacy environment while migrating data and workflows to a current platform.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an old DLL because legacy binaries can be unusual or unsupported.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an item mentioning
msolui80.dll. - Review the detected file path and detection details.
- Restore it only if it came from a verified Microsoft installation and the parent application is trusted.
- If restoration is unavailable, reinstall the parent application from original media.
- Run a full security scan.
Do not disable antivirus merely to obtain the file. If the file was found in an unexpected download folder or arrived with an untrusted installer, remove it instead of restoring it.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC and DISM are appropriate for damaged Windows system files and the Windows component store. msolui80.dll is not established as a protected Windows file, so these commands are unlikely to recreate it. Run them after repairing the owning application, or when other Windows components are also malfunctioning.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
A successful result says that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it could not repair the image, record the message and continue with application repair rather than repeatedly running the command.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. A message stating that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them indicates that Windows corruption was corrected. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the missing DLL is probably not a Windows system-file problem.

Repeating SFC and DISM without identifying which component changed rarely repairs a missing legacy application file. If manually checking several Windows components and repair results is taking time without revealing the cause, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the specific application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the DLL.
Fix 5: Check architecture and dependencies
Known copies of msolui80.dll are 32-bit. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows needs the 32-bit dependency chain; installing only a 64-bit modern Analysis Services provider will not satisfy it.
Check the application architecture from its documentation or installer. Also check whether the application was recently moved between computers, because copying only its executable files often omits required client components and runtimes.

- Confirm that the file is in the directory expected by the application.
- Check that related legacy Analysis Services files are present.
- Repair the complete parent application.
- Review Event Viewer for a more specific loading failure.
- Avoid copying individual dependencies from unrelated computers.
Do not replace an older provider with a newer package merely because the newer package is easier to obtain. Multiple Analysis Services generations can coexist, and an application may require its original provider behavior.
Fix 6: Consider a recent uninstall or system change
If the error began immediately after removing SQL Server, Office, a reporting tool, or an old business application, the uninstall may have removed a shared legacy client component.

A driver update is not a normal fix for msolui80.dll, but it can help if the DLL error appeared alongside broader graphics, storage, or system instability.
Install Windows updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, and System devices.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs a driver.
Do not uninstall a device driver just because the DLL error names a Microsoft component. That can create a second problem without restoring the Analysis Services client.
When several devices need checking, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers are reported as stale; the free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it should not replace reinstalling the legacy application that actually requires msolui80.dll.
Does regsvr32 fix msolui80.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents the command in its regsvr32 reference.
There is no verified evidence that msolui80.dll should be registered with regsvr32. Running commands such as these can produce misleading errors and does not restore missing dependencies:
regsvr32 msolui80.dll
regsvr32 /reg:32 msolui80.dll
Use the application’s installer or repair process instead. If the application vendor’s documentation specifically requires registration, follow that product-specific instruction and use the correct 32-bit regsvr32 on 64-bit Windows.
Recommended Free Tools
Should you copy the DLL manually?
No. Do not copy msolui80.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A random application folder
- Another computer’s installation directory
Manual copying can introduce the wrong version, fail to restore dependencies, create provider conflicts, or carry malware. It also leaves the installation unregistered or incorrectly configured.
The safe sources are the original installer, the application’s repair package, trusted installation media, or the matching Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services package when it is legitimately available and can be independently verified. Current Analysis Services packages are not confirmed replacements for this file.
When the repair still fails
Collect this information before escalating:
- The complete error text
- The requesting executable name
- The executable’s full path
- The application version, if displayed
- The DLL’s Properties > Details information
- The Event Viewer Application entry
- Whether the file exists and where
- Whether antivirus quarantined it
- The last uninstall, update, or restore operation
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The Windows version and edition
This evidence distinguishes a missing file from a missing dependency, incompatible legacy installer, incorrect architecture, or a program that is no longer compatible with modern Windows.
FAQ
Is msolui80.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services client stack and is not normally a Windows system component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich application installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the application. Legacy database, reporting, spreadsheet, business-intelligence, and custom OLE DB applications may have depended on it.
Will installing current MSOLAP or SQL Analysis Services fix it?
It is not guaranteed. Current packages use newer provider generations and are not verified replacements for the 8.0 SQL Server 2000 component.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
Known copies are 32-bit. A 32-bit application therefore needs compatible 32-bit dependencies even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
Will SFC restore it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while msolui80.dll is a legacy application component. Repair or reinstall the owning application first.
