If msostyle.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Microsoft Office installation that the failing program is using instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is associated with Microsoft Office IME Shared property functionality. It has appeared in Office 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016 and later Click-to-Run installations. It normally belongs inside the Office installation folder, not directly in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Identify the Office installation first
Use the failing executable’s location and your installed-product list to determine which Office copy needs repair.

Typical messages include:
- “The program can’t start because msostyle.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because msostyle.dll was not found.”
- “The file msostyle.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading msostyle.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “A required component is missing: msostyle.dll.”
The wording varies by Windows loader, Office build and application. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency used by MSOSTYLE.DLL is missing.
Fix 1: Run Office Online Repair
This is the best first repair for a missing or damaged msostyle.dll.
- Close Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and every other Office application.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Microsoft 365 or the relevant Microsoft Office entry.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Quick Repair, then choose Repair.
Quick Repair is faster and may resolve a minor registration or installation problem. Start Office and test the affected application.
If the error remains:
- Return to the same Modify screen.
- Select Online Repair.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the prompts and allow the process to finish.
Online Repair can replace or repair the complete Office installation and may require an internet connection. It is the appropriate choice when msostyle.dll is missing, corrupted or repeatedly rejected.
What success looks like
Office should open without the DLL message, and the affected executable should load from its normal Office directory. If Online Repair reports that it could not complete, restart Windows and run it again once. If it still fails, continue with the reinstall procedure below.
Fix 2: Repair older MSI-based Office
Some older Office installations use the traditional Windows Installer repair path.
- Press the Windows key and type Control Panel.
- Open Programs and Features.
- Select Microsoft Office or the specific Office edition.
- Choose Change.
- Select Repair.
- Follow the wizard and restart Windows when it finishes.
If both a modern Microsoft 365 installation and an older Office edition appear, repair the product that owns the executable producing the error. Repairing a different Office entry may not restore the required file.

Open an Office application if one will start:
- Open Word or Excel.
- Select File > Account.
- Select Update Options.
- Choose Update Now.
If no Office application opens, run Online Repair first. You can also sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the license and use Microsoft’s official download and reinstall instructions.
Update Windows
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
Run Office Online Repair again after Windows and Office updates are complete. This can resolve an installation that was interrupted during servicing.
Fix 4: Check for antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an Office DLL after detecting a suspicious file, an altered installation or a false positive.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
MSOSTYLE.DLL. - Expand the detection and inspect the original file path.
Do not automatically restore the file. Check that the path belongs to the installed Office product and that the file is from a trusted installation. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can expose the device. If the file came from an official Office installation but is no longer present, repairing Office is safer than creating a broad antivirus exclusion.
Run a full Microsoft Defender scan if the file appeared in an unusual directory, especially if you also found duplicate DLLs outside the Office folders.
Fix 5: Reinstall Office when repair fails
Reinstall Office when Online Repair cannot complete, the error returns immediately, or several Office files are missing.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReinstall from the user’s Microsoft account or from the original licensed Office installer using Microsoft’s official installation guidance.
What success looks like
After reinstalling, open Word or the application that previously failed. Confirm that it launches without the message and that only the intended Office edition remains installed. Remove abandoned parallel Office versions carefully, because an older shortcut or application can continue looking for files from an installation that no longer exists.
Fix 6: Check Office architecture and duplicate installations
A 32-bit Office program must use compatible 32-bit Office files. A 64-bit Office program must use its matching 64-bit installation. Do not copy MSOSTYLE.DLL between Program Files and Program Files (x86), between Office generations, or between separate computers.
To check the installed Office architecture:
- Open Word or Excel if possible.
- Select File > Account.
- Choose About Word or About Excel.
- Read whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
If Office will not open, inspect Settings > Apps > Installed apps for multiple Office products, then identify the failing program’s executable path. Repair or reinstall that exact product. Mixed MSI and Click-to-Run installations can also cause ownership and update conflicts, so remove obsolete editions rather than replacing individual files.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged
MSOSTYLE.DLL is normally an Office-private file. DISM and SFC are therefore not the primary repair for this error. Use them when other Windows files are failing, Office repair cannot complete, or corruption followed a power loss, disk problem or wider system failure.

- Press the Windows key.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and try Office again. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its system file repair instructions.
If SFC reports repaired files but Office still displays the same error, run Office Online Repair. These commands repair Windows components and protected system files; they may not restore an Office-private DLL.
Repeating DISM and SFC without checking what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies, while repairs are performed by the full version; Office Online Repair remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to Office.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFix 8: Consider drivers only when there is a wider device problem
A graphics, input or chipset driver is not a normal source for an Office-private MSOSTYLE.DLL file. Driver work is relevant only if Office errors began with broader display, keyboard, language-input or device failures.
To check a driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Keyboards or Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when available. Do not use Device Manager to search for or replace MSOSTYLE.DLL.
Manually hunting through many driver versions can obscure the Office problem. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing which drivers it identifies, while installation is handled by the full version; reinstalling Office remains the definitive fix for this file.

Do not download msostyle.dll from a DLL website
A standalone download may contain malware, the wrong Office generation, the wrong update build or the wrong architecture. It can also leave the damaged Office installation unchanged, so the same error returns later.
Use Office repair or reinstall it from Microsoft instead. The correct file depends on the Office generation, language, update build, installation technology and architecture.
Do not copy it into System32
MSOSTYLE.DLL is generally an Office-private library. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create path conflicts and does not make the correct Office installation use it.
Best Value
- Alternative office suite: Word processor TextMaker, Spreadsheet program PlanMaker, Presentation software Presentations, Automation tool BasicMaker
- Licensed for 5 users / household or 1 user / organization, perpetual lifetime license for Windows, Mac and Linux
- User interface with modern ribbons or classical menus
- Compatible with all modern Microsoft Office documents including DOCX, XLSX, PPTX
- The complete office suite can be installed on a USB flash and used without installation
Do not register it with Regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration interfaces such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL repair command. MSOSTYLE.DLL is an Office runtime library, so registering it is not an appropriate fix and may produce an entry-point or registration error. Microsoft documents the command’s intended scope in its regsvr32 reference.
If the error returns after Online Repair
Check these points in order:
- Confirm the failing executable’s actual Office path.
- Identify which installed Office product owns that executable.
- Remove obsolete parallel Office installations and restart.
- Check Protection History again for a new quarantine event.
- Look for the next missing dependency in Event Viewer or the application crash report.
- Test the application from a new Windows user profile.
- Run a full Defender scan and, if appropriate, an offline scan.
- Contact Microsoft Support or your organization’s Office administrator if AppLocker, WDAC, deployment policy or managed security software is involved.
If the message changes from “missing” to “not designed to run on Windows,” treat that as a possible corruption or architecture mismatch. Repair the matching Office installation rather than replacing the DLL.

FAQ
Is msostyle.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Microsoft Office and normally resides within the Office installation directory. It is not normally supplied as a standalone file in System32 or SysWOW64.
Which Office versions contain it?
Records show it in Office 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016 and later Click-to-Run installations. Exact paths vary by Office edition, architecture, language and update build.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX or .NET?
There is no established reason to install those runtimes for a normal MSOSTYLE.DLL error. Repair the Office installation first.
Can I restore a quarantined copy?
Only after verifying its original Office path and authenticity. If there is any doubt, repair or reinstall Office instead of restoring it.
Recommended Free Tools
Will SFC restore the file?
Usually not, because this is an Office-private file rather than a standard protected Windows component. Use DISM and SFC only when broader Windows corruption is also present.
Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
The Windows loader may be unable to find a dependency required by MSOSTYLE.DLL. Check the full application error and crash report, then repair Office and investigate other missing dependencies rather than copying another DLL.
