mspdox35.dll Errors: Trace the Old Microsoft Jet Dependency

mspdox35.dll is a Microsoft Jet database component used for Paradox database support. When mspdox35.dll is missing, Windows usually cannot start an older application that depends on the 32-bit Jet 3.5 database engine.

The safest repair is normally to repair or reinstall the application that produced the message. Do not begin by downloading the DLL from a random website or copying it into System32.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing Windows, record four details:

  1. Which program displays the error?
Note the executable name and whether the message appears when starting the program, opening a database, or importing data.

  2. What is the complete message?
    Common patterns include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. “The program can’t start because mspdox35.dll is missing from your computer.”

  4. “mspdox35.dll was not found.”
  5. “Error loading mspdox35.dll.”
  6. “The code execution cannot proceed because mspdox35.dll was not found.”
  7. “mspdox35.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The exact wording varies by Windows version, application, dependency, and architecture.

  1. When did the problem begin?
Check whether it followed an antivirus quarantine, application reinstall, program update, disk cleanup, migration to Windows 10 or 11, restoration of an old backup, or a failed database-runtime installation.

  2. Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit?
mspdox35.dll belongs to the older Microsoft Jet 3.5 generation and is expected to be a 32-bit component. A 64-bit database engine should not be assumed to replace it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If only one old program reports the error, the problem is probably with that program or its database prerequisites rather than with Windows itself.

What mspdox35.dll does

The reported description for mspdox35.dll is Microsoft Jet Paradox Isam. It is part of Microsoft Jet and provides database-format support for Paradox data through an ISAM component.

This does not identify the exact application that installed it. An older Microsoft database product, business application, data-access package, or other legacy program may have supplied the file.

It is not normally treated as a core Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL. Installed legacy software can place it in an application-specific directory, so there is no universal correct path that should be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The filename alone also does not prove whether the missing prerequisite is Jet, DAO, MDAC, an application-specific runtime, or another dependency loaded alongside it.

Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error

This is the quickest and most likely fix because the application usually owns its database components.

Try Windows application repair

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on some Windows 10 installations.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Restart Windows and try the application again.

Not every traditional desktop program provides a Repair button. If the option is unavailable, use the program’s original installer instead.

Use the application installer

Look for the original setup media or a trusted installer supplied by the application vendor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the affected program.
  2. Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Choose Repair, Modify, or a similar maintenance option if offered.
  4. Allow the installer to restore the application files and database prerequisites.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Launch the program and repeat the action that previously produced the error.

If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application. Back up its databases, configuration files, license information, and any custom templates first. A reinstall is preferable to replacing one DLL because it restores the related files, registry information, and application-specific runtime together.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair is successful if the application starts without the mspdox35.dll message and can perform the database operation that previously failed.

If the same error returns immediately after reinstalling, do not repeatedly copy the DLL. The program may require an additional Jet, DAO, or MDAC component, or it may be too old for the current Windows environment.

Fix 2: Check the application’s required database runtime

Jet 3.5 is an older generation than later Jet and Access database components. Installing a newer database engine does not automatically supply mspdox35.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The application’s documentation, installation notes, or vendor support instructions should identify the required prerequisite. Microsoft’s Download Center can help locate an official package, but confirm the package identity and architecture before installing it.

Possible terms in old application documentation include:

  • Microsoft Jet Database Engine
  • Microsoft Data Access Components, or MDAC
  • Data Access Objects, or DAO
  • Microsoft Access Runtime
  • A vendor-supplied 32-bit database engine

Do not choose among these solely from the DLL filename. The exact package required by a particular application cannot be determined safely without identifying that application.

Install the prerequisite in the required architecture

If the application is 32-bit, it generally needs the compatible 32-bit database provider. A 64-bit version may install successfully and still fail to satisfy the program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After installing the documented prerequisite:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Open the application.
  3. Test the database function again.
  4. If it still fails, confirm that the installed package is the one documented for that application.
  5. Check whether another Jet, DAO, or MDAC dependency is named in the error or application log.

Do not assume that the modern Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 or 2016 Redistributable contains this Jet 3.5 component. They are different generations, and their contents should be verified before use.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may quarantine a legitimate application file after an update, cleanup operation, or detection change.

Review Windows Security history

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving the affected application or mspdox35.dll.
  5. Review the detected file path and reason.
  6. Restore the file only if the application and its installer are trusted and the security product identifies the detection as a false positive.

If another antivirus product is installed, open its quarantine or protection-history section instead.

After restoring a trusted file:

  1. Update the antivirus definitions.
  2. Run a full scan.
  3. Start the application.
  4. If the file is quarantined again, stop restoring it and contact the application vendor or security-product support.

Never disable antivirus protection merely to obtain a DLL. A file downloaded from an unverified source may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, or be incompatible with the rest of the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check for a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch

A 32-bit application cannot automatically use a 64-bit replacement for a missing database component. Installing a current 64-bit database engine may therefore leave the original error unchanged.

Identify the application architecture

Windows does not always show the bitness clearly in Settings. Use the application’s documentation, installer information, or vendor support materials. You can also inspect the program’s installation directory and executable properties, but the presence of Program Files (x86) is an indicator rather than proof of every dependency.

If the vendor confirms that the application is 32-bit:

  • Use the vendor’s intended 32-bit runtime.
  • Install prerequisites recommended for that application.
  • Avoid mixing unrelated Jet, DAO, and Access components.
  • Do not copy files between System32 and SysWOW64.
  • Do not replace the named DLL with a 64-bit file.

If the program is extremely old, it may remain incompatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11 even after the missing component is restored. Compatibility mode can sometimes help installation or launch behavior, but it does not provide a missing database runtime.

Fix 5: Confirm that the file is actually missing

A loader can report mspdox35.dll even when the file exists. The failure may involve another DLL, a missing provider, an invalid registry entry, a permissions problem, or an application that is searching the wrong directory.

  1. Open the application’s installation folder.
  2. Search for mspdox35.dll.
  3. Do not move, rename, or replace the file yet.
  4. Record the full path if it exists.
  5. Compare the path with the application’s documented installation location.
  6. Check the complete error message for a second missing component.
  7. Review the application’s own log files, if it provides them.

If the file exists in the application folder but the error continues, reinstalling the owning application is safer than manually registering or copying the file. Ask the vendor for dependency diagnostics if the program still cannot locate it.

A file can also exist but fail to load because it has the wrong architecture, is damaged, depends on another missing file, or is blocked by security policy.

Fix 6: Use regsvr32 only when the vendor requires it

mspdox35.dll is a database engine or provider component, not necessarily a COM or ActiveX server. It should not be registered speculatively.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running regsvr32 may produce an error such as:

The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

That message does not prove that the file is corrupt. It may simply mean the DLL was never designed for self-registration.

Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation specifically instructs you to register this file and identifies the correct 32-bit or 64-bit command. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation search provides background on the command.

If official instructions do require registration, follow the documented architecture exactly. Do not experiment with both versions of regsvr32, and do not register a DLL copied from another computer.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows corruption is suspected

SFC and DISM are useful for protected Windows files and the Windows component store. They are not normally a repair method for an application-owned Jet 3.5 DLL.

Use them when several Windows features are failing, Windows itself reports missing system files, or the problem began with broader operating-system corruption.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the application.

Microsoft’s full guidance is available in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC reports that it repaired files but the application still reports mspdox35.dll, that result is consistent with the DLL belonging to the legacy application rather than protected Windows files.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without identifying which component changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for related system problems and show what it identifies, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.

Fix 8: Check drivers only when the application depends on external hardware

A display, printer, scanner, storage, or database connection driver is not the usual source of mspdox35.dll, but a legacy application may interact with external hardware or a vendor data provider.

Use Device Manager only if the failure began after hardware changes or the program also reports device errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Printers, Imaging devices, Display adapters, Network adapters, or Storage controllers.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the General tab and Device status.
  7. Select the Driver tab to view the provider, date, and version.
  8. Obtain an updated driver from the hardware manufacturer.
  9. Restart Windows and test the application.

Do not uninstall a working device driver simply because mspdox35.dll is missing. A driver update will not normally install a Microsoft Jet database component.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention, while driver installation through the full version is optional; for this error, reinstalling the legacy program and its documented runtime remains the primary repair.

Fix 9: Consider System Restore only for a recent change

System Restore may help if the file disappeared immediately after a recent application installation, cleanup, or configuration change. It is not a first-line replacement for reinstalling the program.

  1. Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
  5. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  6. Confirm the restore operation.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

System Restore does not guarantee recovery of an application-owned database component and may remove recently installed software. Back up current files before proceeding.

Why copying mspdox35.dll is usually the wrong fix

Copying the file from another computer can introduce several problems:

  • The file may be the wrong version.
  • It may be the wrong architecture.
  • Its supporting files may still be missing.
  • The source computer may have a different Jet, DAO, or MDAC configuration.
  • The file may be unsigned, modified, or malicious.
  • The application may need registry entries or installation metadata as well.

The preferred sources are the original application installer and an identifiable Microsoft package documented for that application. Do not download mspdox35.dll from a generic DLL repository.

What to do when every repair fails

If the error remains after repairing the program and installing its documented prerequisite, collect this information before contacting support:

  • The application name and executable name
  • The full error text
  • Whether the application is 32-bit
  • The application’s installation path
  • Whether mspdox35.dll exists there
  • The date the problem began
  • Any antivirus quarantine event
  • Any recent reinstall, update, cleanup, or migration
  • Other missing DLL or provider names
  • Whether another Windows user profile has the same problem

If only one user profile is affected, test another profile and check permissions, redirected folders, endpoint-security policies, and profile corruption.

If the application is business-critical and cannot run on current Windows, the vendor may recommend a supported replacement environment or a virtual machine containing an older compatible system. Do not assume that compatibility mode alone supplies the missing Jet runtime.

FAQ

Is mspdox35.dll a Windows system file?

It is a Microsoft Jet component, but it is not normally treated as a standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 core DLL. Legacy software may install it in its own directory.

Is it part of Microsoft Access?

The filename identifies Microsoft Jet and Paradox ISAM support, not a specific Access installation. The exact product that installed it cannot be determined from the filename alone.

Will installing Access Runtime fix the error?

Not necessarily. The required component may belong to the older Jet 3.5 generation, and the correct runtime must be identified from the application’s documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I run regsvr32 mspdox35.dll?

Usually no. Database provider DLLs are not automatically COM servers. Register it only when official application instructions require it.

Can I copy the file from another PC?

That is not recommended. The copy may have the wrong version, architecture, dependencies, or security status.

Why does Windows say the file is missing when it exists?

Another dependency may be missing, the file may be incompatible, the application may be searching the wrong directory, or a required provider or registry entry may be damaged.

Will SFC repair mspdox35.dll?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while this DLL is generally associated with legacy application software. Use SFC and DISM only when broader Windows corruption is suspected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the safest first step?

Identify the program that raises the message, then repair or reinstall that program from its original trusted installer. That restores the dependency in the correct application context instead of treating the DLL as an isolated download.
