“msprint2.dll is missing from your computer” or “msprint2.dll was not found” means that a program tried to load Microsoft’s legacy Printer Setup DLL and Windows could not provide a usable copy. The file is associated with older Windows printer setup components, not with Visual C++, DirectX, or the .NET runtime.

Which fix applies to you

Start with the situation that matches what you see:

  • The message appears when starting one old application or game: repair or reinstall that application from its original media or official source.
  • The message appears while installing an old printer or printer utility: remove the incomplete printer package and reinstall the correct driver.
  • The message appears during every startup: identify the executable that is calling the DLL through Task Manager, Startup apps, Task Scheduler, or Event Viewer.
  • The message appeared after antivirus action: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The message started after a Windows, driver, or software change: use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
  • The affected computer genuinely runs Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, or an old Windows NT installation: restore the matching file from the same installation media or repair the original operating system.
  • The message appears on Windows 10 or Windows 11: do not assume that msprint2.dll belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Modern Windows does not normally ship this legacy component in those folders.

The exact error, the executable named in the error, and the event that triggered it matter more than the DLL filename alone.

What msprint2.dll is

msprint2.dll is a genuine Microsoft file historically described as Printer Setup DLL. It was associated with Microsoft Windows printer setup, especially the Windows 95 Add Printer Wizard and related legacy printer installation processes.

Amazon Basics USB 2.0 Cable, USB-A to USB-B, for Printer or External Hard Drive, Connect to Computer/Laptop/PC, 480 Mbps Transfer Speed, Gold-Plated Connectors, 6 Foot, Black
  • IN THE BOX: (1) 6-foot high-speed multi-shielded USB 2.0 A-Male to B-Male cable
  • DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Connects mice, keyboards, and speed-critical devices, such as external hard drives, printers, and cameras to a computer
  • ULTRA FAST SPEED: Full 2.0 USB capability with 480 Mbps transfer speed
  • DURABLE DESIGN: Corrosion-resistant, gold-plated connectors for optimal signal clarity and shielding to minimize interference

Historical Microsoft documentation identified Msprint.dll and Msprint2.dll as files used by Windows 95 printer setup. Missing or damaged copies could prevent the Add Printer Wizard from running. The files were supplied on the original Windows 95 installation media in the Precopy1.cab cabinet.

That history explains why the name can appear on a modern computer. An old application, printer installer, setup program, or restored backup may still expect a component from the Windows 9x era. A current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation is not proof that the file should exist in a Windows system directory.

The file should not automatically be classified as malware. It should also not automatically be trusted merely because its name resembles a Microsoft component. Check the file’s location, digital signature, and source before allowing or restoring a copy.

First, identify the caller

Do not begin by copying a DLL into a system folder. First determine which program requested it.

Record the full error

Write down:

  1. The complete error text.
  2. The application or executable named in the window.
  3. Whether the error occurs at startup, during installation, or when printing.
  4. The Windows version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  5. Any recent antivirus detection, Windows update, printer change, or application reinstall.
  6. The path shown in the error, if one is provided.

If the message only says that msprint2.dll is missing, the responsible program may be hidden behind a launcher or startup task.

Check Startup apps

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an old printer utility, application launcher, updater, or unknown entry.
  4. Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location.
  5. Note the executable name and folder.
  6. Do not delete the entry yet. Disable it temporarily only if you have identified it and the error occurs during startup.

Restart Windows and check whether the message returns. If it disappears, the disabled startup program is probably the caller.

Check Task Scheduler

  1. Press Windows key, type Task Scheduler, and open it.
  2. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  3. Review tasks whose actions launch old printer software, setup programs, or unknown executables.
  4. Open a task and inspect the Actions tab.
  5. Record the program path before changing anything.
  6. Disable the task temporarily if it clearly launches the program that produces the error.

Check Event Viewer

  1. Press Windows key, type Event Viewer, and open it.
  2. Expand Windows Logs.
  3. Select Application.
  4. Use Find and search for msprint2.dll.
  5. Open any matching event and record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and file path.

If Event Viewer identifies a specific program, repair that program instead of repairing Windows blindly.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application

This is the safest and most likely repair when the error appears only with one program.

Use Windows app repair when available

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the application named by the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same page and choose Reset only if you understand that the application’s local settings may be removed.

Reinstall a traditional desktop program

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the affected application.
  3. Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Reinstall using the original installation media or the software publisher’s official download.
  6. If the installer offers a printer component, install only the component required by the application.
  7. Start the application and repeat the action that previously produced the error.

For an old 16-bit or 32-bit program, the current Windows version may be the real compatibility problem. A 64-bit Windows system can run many 32-bit applications, but it cannot run every 16-bit Windows program natively. If the application is genuinely from the Windows 95 era, use the publisher’s compatibility guidance, a supported virtual machine, or the original operating system environment rather than forcing an unrelated DLL into Windows.

If the error appears only inside a game or launcher, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function first. Reinstalling the game’s own legacy components remains the definitive fix when the game supplied the missing file.

Fix 2: Reinstall the printer and its driver

Use this path when the error begins during printer installation, printing, or startup of printer-management software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove and add the printer again

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Select Printers & scanners.
  4. Select the affected printer.
  5. Choose Remove.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  8. Select Add device.
  9. Follow the prompts to install the printer.

For a USB printer, disconnect the cable before removing the printer and reconnect it only when the installer requests it.

Install the correct driver

Use Windows Update or the printer manufacturer’s official support page. Match the driver to the exact printer model and your Windows version. Avoid downloading a loose msprint2.dll file as a substitute for a printer package.

You can also check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Uninstall device.
  6. If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Install the current driver from Windows Update or the printer manufacturer.

If the printer works after reinstalling the driver but the old utility still reports the DLL error, the utility itself is obsolete or incompletely installed.

When manually comparing drivers, do not assume that a 32-bit application requires a file in SysWOW64. Folder placement is controlled by Windows and the installer, not by the DLL’s name. Do not copy a 32-bit or 64-bit file into a system directory based on guesswork.

  • DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Connects mice, keyboards, and speed-critical devices, such as external hard drives, printers, and cameras to a computer
  • ULTRA FAST SPEED: Full 2.0 USB capability with 480 Mbps transfer speed
  • DURABLE DESIGN: Corrosion-resistant, gold-plated connectors for optimal signal clarity and shielding to protect against noise, minimizing interference for a clear signal

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through several device entries and guessing which driver is stale. Its free scan shows what it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; reinstalling the affected printer software remains the definitive fix when that package is the caller.

Fix 3: Repair Windows system files

Use DISM and SFC when multiple Windows components are failing, the problem began after system corruption, or other protected system files also report errors. These commands are not guaranteed to restore an obsolete Windows 95 component to Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Run DISM first

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for the operation to finish. It can appear paused for a while.

Run System File Checker

In the same administrator Command Prompt, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret the result

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files were not damaged. Repair the calling application or printer package instead.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the affected program.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run sfc /scannow a second time.
  • DISM cannot find the source files: Windows may need an alternate repair source. Use Microsoft’s documented DISM repair-source procedure rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the specific application that requested msprint2.dll.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

An antivirus product may have removed a legitimate file, or it may have detected a malicious file using a misleading name.

Review Windows Security

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Open the detection associated with the program or file.
  5. Check the original path, detection name, and affected application.
  6. Do not choose Restore unless you have verified the file’s source, location, and digital signature.

If the file came from a random download, leave it quarantined. Reinstall the application from its original media or official source instead. Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined item can cause Defender to detect it again.

If the file came from a legitimate installer, update the security definitions and rescan the installer. A legitimate historical filename alone is not enough to establish that a quarantined copy is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows change, printer setup, or application installation and a restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows key.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose Next.
  6. Select a restore point dated before the error began.
  7. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  8. Confirm the restore point.
  9. Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally changes system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs without changing personal documents. It does not guarantee that an obsolete application will work on modern Windows, so reinstall the affected program if the error remains.

Should you copy msprint2.dll manually

Usually, no.

A manually copied file can be:

  • The wrong Windows release.
  • The wrong architecture for the calling program.
  • Corrupted or incomplete.
  • Missing additional dependencies.
  • Blocked by Windows or security software.
  • Incompatible with the application that requested it.
  • A disguised malicious file.

Historical Windows 95 repairs used the original installation media and extracted the matching file from Precopy1.cab. That approach applies to a genuine legacy Windows 95 installation, not as a general repair method for Windows 10 or Windows 11.

If you are maintaining the original Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows NT environment, use installation media matching that exact release and repair the complete printer setup component. Do not substitute a file from another Windows version.

Does regsvr32 msprint2.dll fix it

Do not run this as a routine repair:

regsvr32 msprint2.dll

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-setup library is not automatically a self-registering COM component, and there is no reliable basis for assuming that msprint2.dll exports the required function.

If you run regsvr32 and receive an error such as a missing entry point, that does not prove the file is missing. It usually means the command is inappropriate for that DLL. Repair the program or printer package that owns the file instead.

Historical Windows 9x references to rundll32.exe Msprint2.dll, RUNDLL_PrintTestPage describe an old printer test-page entry point. That is legacy behavior, not a recommended Windows 10 or Windows 11 repair command.

How to tell a missing file from a different problem

A file-not-found message is only the beginning of the diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Missing file: the calling executable cannot locate the expected DLL.
  • Wrong version: the file exists, but the application rejects its exports or behavior.
  • Architecture mismatch: a 32-bit program or 64-bit program is being given an incompatible binary.
  • Dependency failure: msprint2.dll exists, but another required component is missing.
  • Corruption: the file exists but is damaged or has an invalid signature.
  • Security block: antivirus, Smart App Control, or file permissions prevent loading.
  • Compatibility failure: the old program cannot run correctly on the current Windows version.
  • Malware or repackaged software: an untrusted installer is requesting an obsolete component.

Check the file’s Properties dialog, including Digital Signatures, if a copy exists. Record its full path and the executable that loaded or requested it. Do not decide based on the filename alone.

Prevention

  • Keep installers and recovery media for old applications and printers.
  • Use Windows Update or the printer manufacturer’s official driver page.
  • Create a restore point before installing an old printer package or compatibility layer.
  • Do not delete unfamiliar DLLs during disk cleanup unless you know which application owns them.
  • Keep antivirus enabled, but review Protection history before restoring a file.
  • Record the exact executable whenever a DLL error appears.
  • Avoid DLL download sites sites and unofficial repackaged installers.

FAQ

Is msprint2.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. Historical Microsoft documentation identifies it as a Windows printer-setup DLL associated with the Windows 95 Add Printer Wizard. A copy found on a current system should still be checked for its path, signature, and source.

Is msprint2.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

There is no established evidence that it belongs to those runtimes. Installing Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET is not the primary repair for this file.

Should msprint2.dll be in System32?

Do not assume that it should be in System32. Current Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not normally ship this legacy component there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I put it in SysWOW64 because the program is 32-bit?

No. A 32-bit application does not justify manually placing this file in SysWOW64. Let the original installer determine the correct location and dependencies.

What if the error appears every time Windows starts?

Identify the parent executable through Startup apps, Task Scheduler, or Event Viewer. Disable or uninstall that obsolete program, then reinstall it from a trusted source if it is still needed.

What if SFC says everything is fine?

That means protected modern Windows files are probably not the cause. Repair the application, printer package, or legacy environment that requested msprint2.dll.

Can I restore the file from antivirus quarantine?

Only after verifying the original path, publisher, signature, and installation source. If those details cannot be established, leave it quarantined and reinstall the legitimate program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I provide when seeking further help?

Provide the full error text, the executable name, Windows version, whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit, the file path if present, the digital-signature result, and any matching Event Viewer entry. The caller is usually more useful than the DLL name by itself.
