templop.dll Load Error: Trace the Xara App Before Repair

templop.dll errors usually belong to an older Xara application, not to Windows itself. When templop.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or is “not designed to run on Windows,” repair the program that installed it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The safest order is:

  1. Identify the application named in the error.
  2. Repair or reinstall that application from its original installer.
  3. Check whether antivirus removed the file.
  4. Confirm that the old application is compatible with your Windows version.
  5. Use Windows repair commands only for broader system problems.

What is templop.dll?

templop.dll is an application DLL with the internal description TemplOp Module. It is associated with Xara Ltd. and has been found with older Xara software, including Xara Webstyle 4. It has also appeared in software packages containing Xara components.

It is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft Visual C++ component, DirectX file, or .NET file. Windows does not normally install it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

A historical Xara Webstyle 4 installation used a path similar to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
C:Program Files (x86)XaraWebstyle 4dllstemplop.dll

That path is significant because it shows the file being kept inside the application’s own dlls folder. It should not normally be copied into a Windows system directory.

Historical file details

Detail What can safely be said
Internal description TemplOp Module
Publisher association Xara Ltd.
Typical product context Older Xara software, especially Webstyle 4
Historical version metadata Some public records list version 1.0.0.5
Historical size metadata Some records list 233,472 bytes
Architecture Often reported as Win32, but confirm the installed copy
Windows system file No
Normal repair source The parent application’s installer

The version, size, and architecture details are historical file metadata rather than a current Xara specification. Do not choose a replacement file based only on those numbers.

Start with the exact error

Before changing anything, write down the full message and the program that displays it. Examples include:

  • “This application failed to start because templop.dll was not found.”
  • “The file templop.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “Error loading templop.dll.”
  • “Failed to load templop.dll.”
  • “The program can’t start because templop.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The program can’t start because templop.dll is not designed to run on Windows.”
  • “Failed to register the DLLs required by the program.”

These messages do not all mean the same thing. A missing-file message points toward an incomplete installation or quarantine event. A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate a corrupt file, incorrect architecture, a truncated copy, or an incompatible legacy application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also note whether the error names templop.dll itself or another DLL. The named file may only be the first component that Windows could not load. The actual missing dependency may be different.

Fix 1: Repair the application that owns templop.dll

This is the most likely and safest fix.

Find the parent program

Check the title bar and wording of the error. If it appears when launching Webstyle, Xara, or an older design utility, that program is the likely owner.

You can also inspect the shortcut:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the Target field.
  5. Use Open File Location if available.
  6. Look for the application’s own folders, especially a dlls folder.

Do not assume that every program reporting templop.dll is Xara Webstyle 4. Xara components have also been distributed inside other software packages. Repair the program that actually produces the error.

Use Windows’ built-in repair option

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if shown.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Launch the application again.

Some desktop programs do not provide an Advanced options page. In that case:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find the program in Programs and Features.
  5. Right-click it.
  6. Choose Repair, Change, or Modify.
  7. Follow the installer prompts.
  8. Restart Windows and test the program.

A successful repair should restore the DLL to the application’s original directory and allow the application to start without a templop.dll message. If the repair completes but the file is still absent, the repair package may not contain the file, or antivirus may be removing it immediately.

Reinstall from the original source

If repair is unavailable or does not work:

  1. Back up the application’s projects, templates, exports, and license information.
  2. Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Use the original installer or licensed installation media.
  5. Install the same product and edition again.
  6. Restart Windows once more.
  7. Test the program before restoring custom files.

Use the original vendor or licensed distributor source. For an old Xara product, current product support may route legacy-product users through the present product owner or support channel.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Do not install a different Xara product and expect it to supply the same DLL. A matching DLL can depend on the exact application version, folder structure, registration process, and companion files.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine an old DLL, particularly when the file is uncommon or the application has not been updated for years. This does not prove the file is safe. Restore it only when the application and installer have a trustworthy origin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review entries from the time the application stopped working.
  7. Expand any entry referring to the application directory or templop.dll.
  8. Confirm the path and detection details before taking action.

If the file was quarantined:

  • Do not download a second copy from a DLL archive.
  • Do not disable antivirus permanently.
  • Confirm that the program came from original media or a legitimate publisher channel.
  • Use the application installer to restore the file.
  • Restore or allow it only when you understand the detection and trust the file’s provenance.

Microsoft’s guidance for reviewing detections is available in Protection history in Windows Security.

After restoring a trusted file, repair or reinstall the parent program. That gives the installer a chance to restore the complete set of files rather than leaving one manually restored DLL in an inconsistent installation.

Fix 3: Check whether the old application is 32-bit

Older Xara programs commonly run as 32-bit applications, even on 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit application should normally use its own application DLLs from its installation directory.

To check the application location:

  1. Right-click its shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Choose Open File Location.
  4. Look for a path under C:Program Files (x86).
  5. Check whether templop.dll belongs in a nearby dlls folder.

A Program Files (x86) path is a useful clue, but it does not by itself prove the architecture of every file. Public metadata for this DLL is inconsistent, so confirm the installed application and file rather than relying on a search result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy the file to C:WindowsSystem32. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is primarily the location for 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit Windows system components. Neither directory is the normal destination for an application DLL.

Microsoft explains this distinction in its documentation on the File System Redirector.

If the application is 32-bit, reinstall the complete 32-bit application. Do not mix a DLL from one architecture or product release with another.

Fix 4: Test legacy compatibility settings

A Windows update may expose a compatibility or dependency problem in an old program without deleting templop.dll. A reported Webstyle 4 case stopped working after a Windows 11 update, but that does not establish that one update universally causes this DLL error.

Try compatibility settings only after repairing or reinstalling the application:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Start with the Windows version recommended by the application’s documentation or installation media.
  6. Select Apply.
  7. Select OK.
  8. Launch the application.

You can also select Run compatibility troubleshooter and follow the prompts. Test the application after each change so you know which setting affected it.

If the program still fails:

  • Install all updates supplied for that application.
  • Run it once as administrator by right-clicking the shortcut and selecting Run as administrator.
  • Review the application’s own logs, if it creates them.
  • Test whether the program works under a separate Windows user account.
  • Consider using the application in a supported virtual machine or replacing it if the publisher no longer supports the product.

Running as administrator is a diagnostic step, not a permanent cure for a missing DLL.

Fix 5: Use regsvr32 only when the installer requires it

regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It works only with DLL or ActiveX components that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Ordinary runtime DLLs do not need registration.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First use the application’s own Repair, Change, or reinstall process. Some historical Webstyle reports indicate that its installer attempted to register several Xara modules, but that is old product-specific evidence, not a universal instruction for templop.dll.

If the original installer explicitly requires manual registration and you have confirmed the file is a 32-bit DLL, the 32-bit registration tool on 64-bit Windows is typically:

%SystemRoot%SysWOW64regsvr32 "C:Program Files (x86)XaraWebstyle 4dllstemplop.dll"

To run it:

  1. Confirm that the file exists at that exact path.
  2. Open Start.
  3. Type Command Prompt.
  4. Right-click it.
  5. Select Run as administrator.
  6. Paste the command, changing the path only if your installation uses a different location.
  7. Press Enter.
  8. Launch the application again.

Possible results:

  • A success message means registration completed.
  • “The module was loaded but the entry point was not found” means the DLL does not support registration or the wrong file was used.
  • A dependency or load error means another component is missing, the file is corrupt, or the architecture is wrong.

If registration fails, stop repeating the command. Reinstall the application and inspect the installer logs instead. Microsoft documents the limitations of registering OCX and DLL files.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components if other programs are also failing

DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They will not normally recreate a missing third-party Xara DLL, so use them when other Windows behavior is also abnormal or the application reports broader system corruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Keep the window open even if progress appears to pause.

Run System File Checker

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and test the application.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the process only after reviewing the result and restarting. If only the Xara application fails while Windows and other programs work, return to repairing the parent application rather than repeatedly running SFC.

Microsoft’s procedure is described in Using System File Checker in Windows.

Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what it identifies, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix for a missing templop.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the symptoms are broader

A display or system driver is not the normal source of a templop.dll error. Driver work is appropriate if the application also crashes with graphics errors, the screen flickers, Windows reports device failures, or Device Manager shows a warning icon.

To inspect devices:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters and any category showing a warning icon.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the General and Driver tabs.
  7. Use Update driver or obtain the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer.
  8. Restart Windows and test the application.

Do not replace a working driver solely because templop.dll is missing. If the application’s own documentation requires a specific graphics component, follow that documentation and use the matching architecture.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers and identify the versions involved, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional, and it cannot replace reinstalling the Xara application that owns templop.dll.

Fix 8: Install optional Windows features only when documented

Do not enable random Windows features to fix this DLL. There is no established evidence that templop.dll itself requires .NET, DirectX, or Visual C++.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the application’s original documentation specifically requires a Windows feature:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Features.
  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Enable only the documented feature.
  5. Select OK.
  6. Restart Windows if prompted.
  7. Test the application.

If the installer specifically requests an official Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, install the required x86 or x64 package from Microsoft rather than downloading a standalone DLL. Do not install a runtime merely because a DLL website recommends it.

What not to do

Do not download templop.dll from a random DLL website

A downloaded replacement can have:

  • The wrong architecture.
  • The wrong historical version.
  • A damaged or incomplete file.
  • Unresolved dependencies.
  • Malware or unwanted code.
  • No matching installer registration or configuration.

It may also hide the real problem, such as an incomplete installation or an unsupported application.

Do not copy it into System32

Application DLLs should normally remain beside the executable or inside the application’s own subdirectories. Copying a file into a system directory can make troubleshooting less clear and can cause other programs to load the wrong copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not clean the registry

A registry cleaner cannot reconstruct the correct application files, dependencies, or installer state. Removing unrelated registry entries can make an old application harder to repair.

Do not run regsvr32 repeatedly

Registration is not required for every DLL. If the file does not export the required registration entry point, repeated attempts will not make it load.

If reinstalling still does not restore the file

Work through this checklist:

  1. Confirm the exact application name and edition.
  2. Check whether the installer package actually contains templop.dll.
  3. Review Windows Security Protection history.
  4. Confirm the installation path and whether the application is 32-bit.
  5. Install from the exact original media or licensed source.
  6. Check application logs and installer logs.
  7. Test compatibility settings.
  8. Try a new Windows user profile as a diagnostic.
  9. Determine whether the application is unsupported on the current Windows release.
  10. Contact the current product owner with the exact error and installation details.

If the failure began immediately after a Windows change and application repair failed, System Restore may help when a restore point predates the problem. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, choose a suitable restore point, and review the affected programs before confirming.

System Restore can revert system configuration, installed programs, and registry state without removing personal files. Microsoft’s instructions are available in System Restore.

FAQ

Is templop.dll a Windows file?

No. It is an application DLL associated with Xara’s TemplOp Module and older software containing Xara components.

Does templop.dll belong to Xara Webstyle 4?

It has been found in Xara Webstyle 4, including an installation path under the program’s dlls folder. Webstyle 4 is a verified example, not proof that it is the only application using the file.

Should I download a replacement DLL?

No. Restore it through the parent application’s original installer or repair process.

Should I put templop.dll in System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Keep an application DLL in the directory expected by the application. System32 and SysWOW64 are not general storage locations for downloaded application files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need regsvr32?

Usually not. Use it only when the original application installer or documentation explicitly requires registration and the DLL supports it.

Could antivirus have removed it?

Yes. Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history, but restore a quarantined file only when its origin is trusted.

Is the problem caused by Windows 11?

Not necessarily. A Windows update can expose an old application’s compatibility or dependency problem, but there is no evidence that one Windows update universally deletes or breaks templop.dll.

When should I stop repairing it?

Stop when the original installer cannot run, the application is unsupported, repeated repairs do not restore the file, or the program depends on obsolete components unavailable on the current Windows release. At that point, contact the product owner or move the workload to a supported replacement or older Windows environment.
