msptls.dll is usually a Microsoft Office shared DLL, not a normal Windows system file. If Windows reports that msptls.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the Office product or Microsoft application that owns it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file appears in Microsoft Office 2010 and Office 2013 update manifests, including components used by Word, PowerPoint, Office conversion features, and SharePoint or Office Web Apps. It can also appear in later Microsoft application packages. Typical locations are beneath an Office or Microsoft Shared folder, but the exact path depends on the Office generation, installation technology, application, and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.

Also avoid these two common mistakes:
- Do not download
msptls.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy it into

A downloaded DLL can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Office build, or leave the damaged installation unchanged. Use the official Microsoft Office installation or the official installer for the application that reports the error.
Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Office
Time needed: About 10 to 30 minutes, depending on whether Online Repair is required.
This is the most likely fix when Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, or another Office-connected program reports the error.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Close every Office application.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the relevant Office edition.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one.
- Select Quick Repair and choose Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the program that previously failed.
Quick Repair is a useful first attempt because it is faster. If msptls.dll is still missing or the application still will not start, repeat the process and select Online Repair. Microsoft describes Online Repair as the more comprehensive option because it replaces the complete Office installation.
For MSI-based Office
- Press
Windowsand type Control Panel. - Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and then Programs and Features.
- Select your Microsoft Office installation.
- Choose Change.
- Select Repair.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows.
Test the same application after the restart. If repair completes but the error is unchanged, continue with the ownership and architecture checks below rather than copying a DLL manually.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the application that owns the file
Time needed: About 15 to 45 minutes.
If the error comes from a non-Office program, that program may bundle or expect its own Microsoft component. Repair that application first.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Locate the application named in the error or the executable that fails to start.
- Open its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program and test it.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, return to the same screen and choose Reset, if the application supports it.
- If the error remains, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or your Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page when it is an owned Office product.
Reinstall the complete application instead of placing a loose DLL beside its executable. This restores the expected files, registry information, dependencies, and architecture together.

A repair or reinstall is especially appropriate if the problem began immediately after:
- An Office update
- An Office uninstall or reinstall
- A failed application update
- Disk cleanup
- Removal of an older Office edition
- A partially completed installation
Fix 3: Check whether the file was quarantined
Time needed: About 5 to 15 minutes.
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a damaged, modified, or incorrectly detected file. A missing file alone does not prove that antivirus software caused the problem.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
msptls.dllor the application that uses it. - Check the file path, detection details, and publisher information.
- Restore or allow the file only if it is a genuine Microsoft-signed file in the expected Office or application directory.
- If the path is suspicious, leave it quarantined.
- Repair or reinstall Office or the affected application instead.
- Run a full Windows Security scan.
Do not disable antivirus protection just to force an unknown DLL into the system. If Microsoft Office repair repeatedly recreates the file and antivirus removes it again, investigate the detection before adding an exclusion.
Fix 4: Confirm the path, publisher, and architecture
Time needed: About 10 minutes.
A 32-bit program needs a compatible 32-bit dependency. A 64-bit program needs a compatible 64-bit dependency. Installing the opposite Office architecture can leave an application unable to load a valid-looking file.
To inspect the failing program:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Target field on the Shortcut tab.
- Note the executable name and installation folder.
- Open that folder and search the application directory and nearby Microsoft Shared or Office folders for
msptls.dll. - Right-click the DLL, select Properties, and open Details and Digital Signatures.
The path should normally be within the Office or Microsoft application installation tree, not directly in System32 or SysWOW64. The file should identify Microsoft as its signer when a signature is present.
Microsoft manifests document msptls.dll in Office 2010 and Office 2013 for both x86 and x64 packages. An Office 2013 update example lists version 15.0.4719.1000, with different file sizes for x86 and x64. Office version families also differ: 14.0 broadly corresponds to Office 2010, 15.0 to Office 2013, and 16.0 to Office 2016 and Microsoft 365-era products. Do not treat an unverified 12.0 file record as an Office 2013 version.
If you need to change Office bitness, uninstall the unwanted Office architecture completely before installing the other one. Mixed installations can leave the wrong executable searching for the wrong dependency.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other Windows files are also damaged
Time needed: About 15 to 40 minutes, plus a restart.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
SFC and DISM are appropriate when Windows itself shows broader corruption, system applications fail, or several protected Windows files are damaged. They generally will not restore a DLL owned solely by Office.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows resources after that repair. If both commands complete successfully but msptls.dll is still missing, return to Office or application repair. Repeating SFC will not replace an Office-owned file.
If you want help identifying which Windows components are damaged instead of repeatedly guessing through command output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues; its free scan shows what it found, while repairs require the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the program that owns msptls.dll remains the definitive fix.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the failing application identifies one
Time needed: About 10 to 30 minutes.
msptls.dll is not itself a device driver. Device Manager is relevant only if the application error began with a printer, scanner, display, capture device, or another hardware driver update.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the hardware category named by the application.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver or install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not remove a working driver merely because msptls.dll is missing. If you are manually checking many devices and need a clearer inventory, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show outdated drivers; the free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. It does not replace repairing the Office or application installation.
Fix 7: Use System Restore for a recent installation failure
Time needed: About 15 to 45 minutes.
Use System Restore only if the problem began after a recent installation, update, cleanup operation, or malware event and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected restore point. If no suitable point exists, repair or reinstall Office instead.
Causes of an msptls.dll error
| Likely cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Corrupted Office installation | Quick Repair, then Online Repair |
| Partial Office or application update | Repair or reinstall the exact product |
| Wrong Office architecture | Remove the unwanted bitness and reinstall the correct edition |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify path and signature, then restore only when safe |
| Windows component corruption | DISM followed by SFC |
| Recent system change | System Restore if a suitable point exists |
| File present but application still fails | Check executable architecture, permissions, dependent DLLs, logs, and duplicate Office installations |

Do not use regsvr32 msptls.dll as a general repair command. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no public Microsoft evidence that the Office msptls.dll builds discussed here are self-registering COM components, so registration is normally irrelevant.
FAQ
Is msptls.dll part of Windows?
Generally, no. It is associated primarily with Microsoft Office and other Microsoft application packages. It is not a standard standalone Windows runtime file that should be downloaded into a system directory.
Which program owns msptls.dll?
Microsoft Office is the primary documented source. Office 2010 and Office 2013 manifests list the file, and other Microsoft packages may contain it. If a different program displays the error, repair that program first because it may bundle or expect its own copy.
Should I download msptls.dll from the internet?
No. Random DLL repositories can provide malware, the wrong Office generation, or the wrong architecture. Repair or reinstall the owning Microsoft product from an official Microsoft source.
Is msptls.dll a 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Both x86 and x64 Office packages contain the file. The correct copy must match the application and Office architecture that load it.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable or DirectX fix it?
Usually not. msptls.dll is an Office or Microsoft application component, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file.
Is Office 2013 still supported?
No. Microsoft ended Office 2013 support on April 11, 2023. Repair may restore the installation, but moving to a supported Office release is the safer long-term solution.
What if Office repair does not work?
Reinstall the exact licensed Office edition or affected application from its official Microsoft installation route. If Windows also has broader corruption, run DISM and SFC. If the problem began after a known system change, consider System Restore.
