msrle32.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component named Microsoft RLE Compressor. If Windows or an older multimedia application reports that msrle32.dll is missing, not found, corrupted, or incompatible, repair Windows and the affected application rather than downloading a loose DLL.
The file is a legacy Video for Windows codec associated with the vidc.mrle codec identifier. It belongs to the Microsoft Windows Operating System and is published by Microsoft Corporation. Older video editors, media players, screen recorders, and other multimedia programs may request it when opening or encoding older RLE-compressed video.

Use the first description that matches what you are seeing:
- Several programs or Windows multimedia features fail: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- Only one old application reports the error: repair or reinstall that application, then check its compatibility settings.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history and restore it only after confirming the detection is a false positive.
- The message says “not designed to run on Windows” or “not a valid Windows image”: suspect corruption, wrong architecture, or a Windows-build mismatch. Do not replace the file with an arbitrary copy.
- The failure began after an update, codec installation, driver change, or system change: try System Restore.

What msrle32.dll does
Microsoft RLE, or Microsoft Run-Length Encoding, is an older video compression format used by Video for Windows. msrle32.dll supplies the Microsoft RLE compressor or codec driver that compatible programs use to process that media.
It is not:
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX redistributable
- A .NET component
- A normal third-party application library
- A package that Microsoft distributes as a standalone download
A current application may never use the file. Its presence does not mean that every video problem is caused by msrle32.dll, and restoring it will not repair an unrelated graphics-driver, file-format, or application problem.

A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows may use a 32-bit system component associated with the Windows compatibility directory:
C:WindowsSysWOW64msrle32.dll
These directory names are confusing: System32 normally contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. The exact files present depend on the Windows release and architecture.
Do not judge the file only by its name or location. A file can be damaged, mismatched, unsigned, or replaced even when it is in a normally expected directory.
Fix 1: Update Windows, then repair its component store
This is the best first repair when the file is genuinely missing or corrupted.

Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no important updates remain.
Updates can restore protected Windows components and repair servicing problems that prevent SFC from working correctly.
Run DISM
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC uses that store as a source when restoring protected system files, which is why Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows when DISM completes.
A successful result says that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files or cannot repair the image, do not copy msrle32.dll from another computer. Use Windows installation media that matches the installed Windows release and architecture, following Microsoft’s repair guidance.
Run SFC
After DISM completes and Windows has restarted:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
The useful results are:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact. If the application still fails, repair the application or investigate compatibility and dependencies.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: continue to the SFC log and recovery steps below.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart, make sure you opened an elevated Command Prompt, and run DISM again before repeating SFC.
Manually hunting through Windows folders and repeating repair commands without knowing what changed can make this diagnosis tedious. If SFC could not repair msrle32.dll:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
- Press Enter.
- Open the
sfcdetails.txtfile on the desktop. - Search it for
msrle32.dll.
The log can show whether SFC identified the file and whether the repair failed. If the file is not listed, the application may be reporting a dependency problem or a private copy rather than a missing Windows component.
Microsoft’s documented manual replacement process is exceptional. It requires identifying the damaged file and obtaining a known-good copy from the same Windows version and build. Component repair or matching Windows installation media is safer than copying an arbitrary file.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one old video editor, media player, screen recorder, or multimedia program fails, the application is a stronger suspect than Windows.
First look for its built-in repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application and test the same file or operation.
If Repair does not exist or does not help, use the application’s own launcher. Look for options named Verify, Repair, Verify integrity of files, or Scan and repair.
For a traditional desktop application:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- Restart Windows after the repair.
If the program still fails, back up its settings and projects, uninstall it, restart, and reinstall it from the vendor’s official installer. Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will restore msrle32.dll; this file is a Windows multimedia component, not one of those redistributables.
A successful application repair is indicated by the program starting and completing the same media task that previously triggered the error. If the repaired application still reports the file, continue with Windows repair and compatibility testing.
Fix 3: Check compatibility for an older multimedia program
A legacy program can request an old codec correctly but still be incompatible with modern Windows.
- Right-click the application’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version that matches the application’s documented requirements.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the program requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the application and test it.

- Right-click the application executable or shortcut.
- Select Show more options if necessary.
- Select Troubleshoot compatibility.
- Follow the prompts.
- Test the recommended settings.
Compatibility mode cannot repair a missing or corrupted Windows component. It is useful when the file has been restored but the old program still cannot use the legacy multimedia stack.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove a damaged or suspicious copy. Do not disable protection merely to install a downloaded DLL.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
msrle32.dll. - Open the detection details.
- Check the file path, detection name, and action taken.
If Microsoft Defender explicitly quarantined a genuine Windows file and the detection is confirmed to be a false positive, use the available Restore action. Windows Security may also offer Allow on device, but use that only after confirming the file’s origin and integrity.
After restoration:
- Restart Windows.
- Run Windows Update.
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
If the file was located in an application folder, a temporary folder, a downloads folder, or an unexpected directory, do not restore it blindly. Remove the suspicious copy and investigate the application or perform a full scan. A filename alone does not establish that a file is genuine.

A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows can use 32-bit system components, while a 64-bit process requires 64-bit components. Windows releases and architectures also contain different file versions and sizes.
This is why copying a file from another PC, an old backup, or a download page can produce:
- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “The application or DLL is not a valid Windows image”
- “The file is not designed to run on Windows”
- A new error about a missing dependency
Do not replace a 64-bit file with a 32-bit copy, or a file from another Windows release with one from the current installation. Let Windows component servicing restore the matching file.
To check whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Review System type.
If only one old application fails, verify whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit from its documentation or installation folder. The architecture mismatch is especially plausible when the file is present but the loader reports that it is not a valid Windows image.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to the media stack
A display, capture, or audio driver is not the normal source of msrle32.dll, and replacing drivers will not restore the Windows codec. Driver work is appropriate when the application also crashes during capture or playback, Device Manager reports a device problem, or the failure began after a graphics or capture-device change.

Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any category for a capture device.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
If Windows reports a device error, select the Driver tab and use Update Driver, or obtain the driver from the device manufacturer. Restart and test the application again.

Why regsvr32 msrle32.dll is usually wrong
regsvr32 is a registration utility for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a generic command for repairing every DLL.

Its documented public driver entry point is DriverProc, not the normal COM registration entry point used by regsvr32. Running:
regsvr32 msrle32.dll
may produce an error such as a missing entry point or an incompatible module message. That result does not prove that Windows needs a different copy of the file.
Use DISM and SFC for Windows component repair. Repair or reinstall the application when the failure is isolated to one program.

Do not download msrle32.dll from a random DLL repository and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder.
A loose copy may have:
- The wrong Windows architecture
- A different Windows release or build
- An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
- Malware or unwanted modifications
- Incorrect dependencies
- A private application copy that does not match the system component
It can also hide the original problem while creating a second loader failure. There is no separate official Microsoft msrle32.dll download package. Safe sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching Windows installation media, System Restore, or a properly repaired official application installation.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a driver, codec pack, update, application installation, or other system change and a restore point exists from before the failure.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal files. It does not replace a current backup, so save important work first.

Test the application after Windows restarts. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than trying to restore another unrelated copy of the DLL.
Fix 8: Use Windows recovery when repair fails
If DISM, SFC, application repair, security checks, and System Restore do not resolve the problem, the Windows installation may have broader corruption.
Before proceeding:
- Back up documents, projects, browser data, and other personal files.
- Make sure you have installation media or access to another administrator account if needed.
- Record application licenses and settings.
- Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
Use Settings → System → Recovery and review the available recovery options. Depending on the Windows installation, these may include resetting the PC while keeping personal files or reinstalling Windows with installation media.
An in-place repair installation can preserve personal files and applications when supported by the matching Windows installation media. A clean installation is more disruptive and should be reserved for cases where less destructive recovery options fail.
Prevention and safe verification
After the problem is fixed:
- Keep Windows Update current.
- Install multimedia applications from their official vendors.
- Avoid codec packs and DLL files from unknown sources.
- Keep reliable backups of projects and personal files.
- Leave Microsoft Defender protection enabled.
- Create a restore point before major driver or codec changes.
- Record whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Do not delete a Windows DLL merely because an application does not currently use it.
- If a system file is quarantined, review its path and detection before restoring it.
FAQ
Is msrle32.dll safe?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component named Microsoft RLE Compressor. A file with that name is not automatically safe if it is outside the expected Windows component locations or has failed signature and integrity checks.

What if the file is present but the application still fails?
Check for architecture mismatch, Windows-build mismatch, failed dependencies, application corruption, and compatibility problems. A modern program may also use a different codec framework and may not need this file at all.
When should I reinstall Windows?
