1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutemssadmin.dll is a legacy Microsoft Search file, not a modern Windows gaming DLL. If Windows reports that mssadmin.dll is missing, the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the older application that requested it, such as Visio, SQL Server/MSDE, or another program that bundled MSSearch.
Do not download a random copy and place it in System32. That can introduce malware, use the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, and still leave the missing application dependencies unresolved.

What is mssadmin.dll?
The file is identified as Microsoft Search Admin Objects and belongs to the older MSSearch component developed by Microsoft Corporation. It was distributed with legacy Microsoft products and applications that used the older full-text-search stack.
Likely sources include:
- Microsoft Visio 2002 and related Office-era components
- SQL Server 2000 and MSDE full-text-search installations
- Older business software that redistributed Microsoft Search
- Legacy applications that installed shared Microsoft Search files
This is not the same component as modern Windows Search. Current Windows Search uses newer Windows services and components, including SearchIndexer.exe. Rebuilding the Windows Search index or resetting the Search app will not normally recreate a missing mssadmin.dll.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
The commonly documented file is a 32-bit legacy component. Its correct location depends on the application that installed it. An old program directory or a Microsoft Shared MSSearch directory is more plausible than the current Windows System32 or SysWOW64 folders.
Errors caused by a missing mssadmin.dll
You may see wording such as:
- “This application failed to start because mssadmin.dll was not found.”
- “The file mssadmin.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: mssadmin.dll.”
- “Error loading mssadmin.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because mssadmin.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “mssadmin.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The phrase specified module could not be found does not always mean that mssadmin.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency used by the DLL. That is another reason repairing the complete parent application is safer than replacing one file.
Fix mssadmin.dll missing errors
Work through these fixes in order. Start by identifying the program that displays the error.

Read the complete error carefully. The title bar or message often identifies the failing program. If it appears when launching a shortcut, check the shortcut target.
- Right-click the shortcut that triggers the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Check the Target field.
- Note the application name and installation folder.
If the error appears during startup rather than when launching a visible application, inspect Windows startup entries:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old Microsoft, database, business, game, or launcher entry.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location, if available.
You can also check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time the message appeared.
- Check the Faulting application name and Faulting module name fields.
Write down the full path of the failing executable. This tells you which installation must be repaired.
If the application was already removed
An abandoned shortcut, scheduled task, service, or startup entry may still be trying to launch the old program.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps > Startup.
- Turn off the entry associated with the removed application.
For scheduled tasks:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Select suspicious tasks one at a time.
- Check the Actions tab for a path pointing to the removed program.
- Disable or delete the task only when you have confirmed that it belongs to the obsolete application.
If the error stops after disabling the old launcher, the DLL was not a current Windows requirement.

2. Repair the application that owns the file
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely fix. Windows applications normally install groups of files and registry entries together. Repairing the parent program restores the correct DLL, dependencies, configuration, and architecture.
Repair through Windows Settings
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
If Repair is unavailable, select Modify, Change, or Uninstall and look for the product’s maintenance wizard. Older Microsoft installers commonly provide Repair after selecting the product from the original setup media.
Repair through Control Panel
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For an old Visio installation, use the original Visio installation media and its applicable service-pack media. For SQL Server 2000 or MSDE, use the matching installation media and service-pack level. Mixing files from unrelated releases can create additional loader and dependency errors.
If the program is a game or launcher, open its settings and use Verify files, Verify integrity, or the equivalent repair option. This restores files from the game’s own trusted installation source.
How to tell whether this worked
The fix worked if:
- The application launches without the DLL message.
- The old search or database feature works normally.
- No new “entry point,” dependency, or side-by-side error appears.
- The repaired application points to its own installation directory rather than a random download folder.
If repair completes but the error remains, uninstall and reinstall the same application from its original, trusted media. Do not install a newer unrelated runtime in its place.
3. Check antivirus quarantine and the file path
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may have removed a legacy file, especially if the application directory is old or incomplete. A Microsoft filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is authentic.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections recorded when the error began.
- Expand any detection associated with the affected application.
- Check the original file path and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The path belongs to the known application.
- The application was installed from legitimate media.
- The file is associated with the original product.
- A security scan does not identify the file as malicious.
- You will immediately run the application’s repair process afterward.
Do not restore a copy found in Downloads, a temporary folder, an email attachment, or an unknown directory. If quarantine restoration is unavailable, reinstall the owning product instead.

To inspect a remaining file:
- Right-click
mssadmin.dll. - Select Properties.
- Check the General and Digital Signatures tabs.
- Review the file location and signer information.
- Scan the file with Windows Security.
A suspicious copy should be removed after confirming that it is not part of a legitimate installation. If malware is possible, run Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
4. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus a restart
Use this step when Windows itself shows other corruption symptoms, such as damaged built-in apps, update failures, protected-file errors, or several unrelated system files failing. DISM and SFC are not general installers for obsolete application DLLs.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It may use Windows Update as a repair source. Then run:
Recommended Free Tools
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
What the results mean
- The restore operation completed successfully: DISM repaired or confirmed the Windows component store.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some: restart, run DISM again if necessary, and review the CBS log or repair Windows further.
- No integrity violations were found: the missing file is more likely part of the legacy application than Windows itself.
Microsoft documents DISM image repair in its Windows deployment guidance and documents SFC for checking protected Windows files.
Repeating SFC will not recreate a file that was never part of the current Windows installation. If the application still requests mssadmin.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall step.
Manually checking Windows components and repeating SFC/DISM can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair provides a scan that shows the reported issues, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application that owns mssadmin.dll remains the definitive fix.
5. Install pending Windows updates
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Windows Update may repair the operating system or its servicing components, but it is unlikely to recreate a DLL belonging to removed Visio, SQL Server, MSDE, or other legacy software.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Select Advanced options > Optional updates if applicable.
- Restart when prompted.
- Test the affected application.
Do not expect Windows Update to install a retired Microsoft Search component on demand. If the error names a legacy program, use that program’s installer.
6. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit applications through its compatibility layer. That does not mean a 32-bit DLL can be copied into any Windows folder.

The commonly documented mssadmin.dll component is legacy 32-bit software. A 32-bit application may expect the file beside its executable or inside the application’s own Microsoft Search directory. Copying an x86 file into System32 or SysWOW64 does not fix missing dependencies or an incompatible application installation.
Check the application architecture indirectly:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, where available.
- Check whether the failing program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also inspect the installer documentation or the application’s installation folder. Use the same architecture, language, and service-pack level supplied by the original product. Never combine a file from one legacy Microsoft product with another merely because both mention MSSearch.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →7. Update drivers only when the error follows a driver-related event
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A display, chipset, storage, or motherboard driver does not normally install mssadmin.dll. Driver repair is therefore not a primary fix for this error. Consider it only if the message began immediately after a driver installation and the affected program is a game or hardware utility.
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Use Update driver or install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not remove a working driver solely because mssadmin.dll is missing. The parent application remains the likely owner.
Manually checking every device and guessing which driver is stale can take time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the application that requested mssadmin.dll.
8. Use System Restore only for a known recent failure
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore can help when the error began after a failed application update, cleanup operation, or system change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore may not restore a complete legacy application or its installation media. If the error continues, repair or reinstall the original program.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid websites offering isolated DLL downloads. A downloaded file may be:
- Modified or bundled with malware
- The wrong architecture
- From the wrong language or service-pack level
- Missing required companion files
- Intended for another Microsoft product
- Unsigned or incorrectly signed
- A fake file using a familiar Microsoft name
Copying it into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64 is especially risky. Those directories have different architecture and servicing roles. Blind copying can cause conflicts and may make later repairs harder.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is regsvr32 the answer?
Usually not.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide a COM registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A missing support DLL is not repaired by registering it, and there is no established evidence that mssadmin.dll should be registered manually.
Do not run:
regsvr32 mssadmin.dll
unless the application’s official documentation specifically instructs you to do so. If registration is required, the correct DLL path and architecture must match the calling application. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains its purpose and syntax, but it does not establish that this legacy Search component should be registered.

FAQ
Is mssadmin.dll a Windows 11 system file?
Do not assume that it is. mssadmin.dll is an obsolete Microsoft Search component associated with legacy applications. Modern Windows Search uses different components.
Can I download mssadmin.dll from Microsoft?
There is no verified current standalone Microsoft download intended for this file. Use the original installer or media for the application that requested it.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. The correct location depends on the owning application and its architecture. Copying a random file into System32 or SysWOW64 can create more problems.
Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET help?
There is no evidence that mssadmin.dll belongs to those runtimes. Repair the legacy Microsoft Search application first.
Will rebuilding the Windows Search index fix it?
Usually not. Rebuilding the index repairs modern search indexing behavior, not a missing legacy MSSearch DLL.
Why does the error appear after uninstalling a program?
The uninstall may have left a startup shortcut, scheduled task, service, or another application that still expects the shared Search component. Remove the abandoned launcher or reinstall the program that still needs it.
What if the error says the DLL is not designed to run on Windows?
That wording can indicate a wrong architecture, damaged file, incompatible legacy version, or missing dependency. Inspect the file path and repair the complete application rather than replacing the DLL alone.
What should I do if none of these fixes work?
Record the failing executable’s full path, the exact error text, the DLL path if shown, whether antivirus quarantined anything, and the result of DISM and SFC. Then identify whether the original product was Visio, SQL Server/MSDE, or another legacy application and reinstall that product from matching trusted media.
