If mssip32.dll is missing, Windows or an application cannot load a component used for signature-related operations. The mssip32.dll error usually points to damaged Windows files, an incomplete application installation, quarantine by security software, or an architecture mismatch.

Use the checklist below first, then follow the repairs in order.

Quick diagnostic checklist

Before changing files, note:

  • Which program shows the error
  • Whether the error appears when Windows starts or only when one application opens
  • Whether the message says “missing,” “not found,” “error loading,” or “specified module could not be found”
  • Whether the problem started after a Windows update, application install, antivirus alert, cleanup utility, or system crash
  • Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether other Windows applications are failing

Do not download a loose copy of mssip32.dll from a DLL download website. The file may have the wrong Windows build, architecture, signature, or hidden malware, and copying it may leave the underlying component-store problem unresolved.

What is mssip32.dll?

mssip32.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component. Its embedded description is “MSSIP32 Forwarder DLL”, and its publisher metadata identifies Microsoft Corporation.

The file is associated with Microsoft’s Subject Interface Package, or SIP, APIs. Windows uses these APIs for operations involving file signatures and Authenticode data, including retrieving, creating, and verifying signature information. Microsoft documents these functions through its mssip.h SIP API reference and CryptSIPGetSignedDataMsg documentation.

An ordinary application can still report this Windows component. The application may be loading a Windows dependency directly, checking a signed executable, or failing while resolving another dependency. The error does not prove that the application itself supplied the DLL or that a particular game is responsible.

Where should mssip32.dll be located?

On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:

  • Native 64-bit copy: %windir%System32mssip32.dll
  • 32-bit copy used by 32-bit programs: %windir%SysWOW64mssip32.dll

System32 does not mean “32-bit.” On 64-bit Windows, it normally contains native 64-bit system files. SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit system files through Windows’ file-system redirection behavior. Microsoft explains this distinction in its File System Redirector documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check the locations:

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Enter %windir%System32 in the address bar.
  3. Look for mssip32.dll.
  4. On 64-bit Windows, also enter %windir%SysWOW64.
  5. Do not replace either file manually if it is missing or suspicious. Use the repair procedures below.

A file with the correct name but an invalid Microsoft digital signature should not be trusted. To inspect a copy, right-click it, select Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present. A path, signature, and file name should be considered together rather than relying on the name alone.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

A failed or incomplete servicing operation can leave protected Windows files unavailable. Start with pending updates because the update process may include the correct component repair.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install available updates.
  6. Restart Windows, even if the update process does not require an immediate restart.
  7. Open the program that showed the error.

If Windows Update fails, record the error and continue with DISM and SFC. Do not repeatedly restart without running the repair commands.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the most appropriate fix when mssip32.dll is missing from a Windows directory, corrupted, incorrectly serviced, or failing across more than one application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using the repaired component store. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is running.

When DISM completes successfully, run SFC in the same elevated window:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected program.

Understand the SFC result

SFC may report that:

  • No integrity violations were found
  • Corrupted files were found and repaired
  • Some files could not be repaired

If files were repaired, restart and test the program again. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, continue to the repair-source section rather than downloading the DLL manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running these commands by hand is safe but can be difficult to interpret when DISM and SFC produce different results. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system-file problems and show what needs attention, while its repair function is available in the full version. It is optional, and official DISM and SFC remain the appropriate Windows repair commands.

If DISM cannot find repair files

If DISM cannot obtain files from Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a valid Windows repair source. The source must match the installed Windows edition and be close enough to the installed build to provide compatible components.

Fix 3: Repair the affected application

If only one application fails and other Windows programs work, the application installation or its dependency resolution may be damaged.

For a Microsoft Store application or a supported Windows application:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Find the affected program.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  7. Choose Advanced options.
  8. Select Repair.
  9. Start the application again.

If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same screen and use Reset where appropriate. Reset can remove application data or settings, so check the application’s own documentation first.

For a traditional desktop program:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Choose Programs and Features.
  4. Right-click the affected program.
  5. Select Repair or Change, if available.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart the program.

If repair fails, uninstall the application and reinstall it from its official publisher, Microsoft Store listing, or official launcher. Do not place a downloaded mssip32.dll beside the program executable unless the application’s official installer specifically supplies that private dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a game, open its launcher and look for Verify, Validate, or Repair files. The exact menu depends on the launcher. This checks the game installation without assuming that the Windows DLL itself is the problem.

Fix 4: Check antivirus Protection History

Windows Security or another antivirus product may quarantine a file after a detection or false positive. Do not restore the file automatically.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Choose Protection history.
  6. Select the relevant detection.
  7. Review the detected path, publisher, and action.
  8. Check whether the file was in a normal Windows directory and whether its digital signature identifies Microsoft.
  9. Run a full scan before allowing anything.

Microsoft notes in its Protection History guidance that restoring a quarantined item causes Defender to scan it again. Restore or allow the file only after its authenticity and location are established.

If the file was modified, found in an unexpected directory, or has no valid Microsoft signature, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. If malware or unauthorized system modification is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline through Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.

After a verified Windows copy has been removed, use DISM and SFC to restore it instead of extracting the quarantined file manually.

Fix 5: Check the 32-bit and 64-bit architecture

A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows may fail even when a 64-bit program works. The program needs the architecture-appropriate copy and registry view.

Check both locations:

%windir%System32mssip32.dll
%windir%SysWOW64mssip32.dll

Do not copy the file from one directory to the other. A 32-bit application should use the 32-bit Windows component in SysWOW64, while a native 64-bit application should use the native copy in System32.

If the program is old, check its publisher’s system requirements or reinstall it using its current installer. Do not assume that installing a 32-bit runtime or a 64-bit runtime will repair this Windows component.

Fix 6: Register mssip32.dll only when registration is actually damaged

Registration is not the normal fix for a missing or corrupted DLL. It cannot recreate a deleted file, repair the Windows component store, or correct an architecture mismatch.

However, mssip32.dll exposes registration-related exports, so regsvr32 can be relevant when the correct Windows copy exists but its SIP registration is damaged. Microsoft explains the command in its regsvr32 reference.

First verify the file’s path and signature. Then open Command Prompt as administrator and use the command matching the copy.

For the native 64-bit copy on 64-bit Windows:

%windir%System32regsvr32.exe %windir%System32mssip32.dll

For the 32-bit copy:

%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe %windir%SysWOW64mssip32.dll

Restart Windows and test the affected program.

A message stating that the module was loaded but DllRegisterServer was not found means the file does not expose the registration entry point expected by that command. Other failures can indicate a wrong architecture, missing dependency, damaged file, or registry permissions. Microsoft covers these cases in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.

Do not run both commands repeatedly or register an arbitrary copy from an application folder.

Fix 7: Check disk and file-system damage

Disk corruption can cause Windows files to disappear or become unreadable again after repair. If DISM and SFC repair the file but the error returns, investigate storage and recent system changes.

First review the results from DISM and SFC. Then:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose Storage.
  4. Review available space and drive health information where available.
  5. Check whether the problem began after a forced shutdown or disk error.
  6. Temporarily remove third-party optimizer or debloating utilities that modify Windows components.
  7. Run a full malware scan.

If the failure continues, use System Restore if an appropriate restore point exists. Microsoft provides instructions for System Restore.

Fix 8: Check drivers only when the failure points to a device

A driver is not the normal source of mssip32.dll, but a damaged device or security component can cause an application to fail during startup. Use Device Manager only when the error began after a driver change or the failing application interacts with a specific device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category associated with the application, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Review the driver provider and date.
  8. Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver only when appropriate.
  9. Restart Windows and test the program.

Obtain drivers from Windows Update or the device manufacturer. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention, while installing drivers requires the full version. It is optional, and a driver update is not a substitute for repairing Windows when DISM or SFC identifies component corruption.

Fix 9: Use Windows recovery when repairs fail

If the file repeatedly disappears or Windows cannot repair it, use a broader recovery method.

System Restore

Use System Restore when a restore point predates the error:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  6. Review the affected programs.
  7. Complete the restore and restart.

Windows Update repair or reinstall

On supported Windows versions, open Settings > System > Recovery and review the available Windows Update repair or reinstall option. Follow the on-screen instructions and keep the device connected to power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In-place reinstall

If Windows remains damaged, use official Windows installation media and choose the option to Keep personal files and apps. Microsoft documents this process in its Windows installation media reinstall guide.

Back up important files before any recovery operation.

What not to install

Visual C++ Redistributable

Visual C++ Redistributables provide application runtime libraries. They are not the official distribution mechanism for mssip32.dll. Install a Visual C++ package only when the affected application specifically requires it or shows a Visual C++ runtime error. Microsoft lists supported packages on its Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.

DirectX runtime

The DirectX End-User Runtime supplies legacy DirectX libraries, including libraries used by some older games. It is not a documented source for mssip32.dll. Do not install DirectX solely because this Windows component is missing. Microsoft’s official package is described on the DirectX End-User Runtime page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Features

Do not enable or disable random entries under Turn Windows features on or off to repair this file. Windows Features manages optional Windows components, not a general-purpose DLL restoration system. Use DISM and SFC for a damaged Windows component.

Common error messages

You may see:

  • “The program can’t start because mssip32.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “mssip32.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading mssip32.dll.”
  • “The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because mssip32.dll was not found.”
  • “mssip32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.”
  • “DllRegisterServer failed.”

These are loader- or registration-level messages. They identify where loading failed, not necessarily why it failed. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of mssip32.dll is missing.

FAQ

Is mssip32.dll malware?

Not by name alone. It is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component associated with SIP and signature operations. Verify its location, Microsoft signature, and provenance. A copy in an unexpected folder or with an invalid signature should be treated as suspicious.

Can I download mssip32.dll from Microsoft?

There is no official standalone mssip32.dll redistributable or separate Microsoft download package. Restore it through Windows servicing with DISM and SFC, Windows Update, System Restore, or official Windows installation media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy mssip32.dll into System32?

No. Manual copying can introduce the wrong build, architecture, signature, or malicious code. It also does not repair the Windows component store. Let Windows restore the correct copy.

Will Visual C++ fix this error?

Not normally. Visual C++ is an application runtime and is not the documented source of this Windows component.

Will installing DirectX fix mssip32.dll?

Not normally. DirectX installers supply DirectX libraries, not this Windows SIP component.

Should I run regsvr32?

Only after verifying that the correct Windows copy exists and registration is genuinely damaged. Use the architecture-matching command, not a random DLL-registration command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the 32-bit application fail while the 64-bit version works?

The 32-bit application may need the 32-bit copy under %windir%SysWOW64, while the 64-bit application uses the native copy under %windir%System32. Repair Windows rather than copying one architecture over the other.

What is the best first fix?

Install pending Windows updates, then run DISM followed by SFC from an elevated Command Prompt. If only one application fails, repair or reinstall that application after completing the Windows check.
