msvcp100d.dll is the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 debug C++ runtime library. If Windows reports that msvcp100d.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the affected application is usually trying to run a Debug build without the matching development environment.
The most important detail is the final d. It means debug. The ordinary Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable contains release runtime files such as msvcp100.dll; it does not normally provide msvcp100d.dll. For an ordinary user, the correct fix is usually to repair, verify, reinstall, or update the application that is requesting it.

What msvcp100d.dll is
msvcp100d.dll belongs to the Visual C++ 2010 C++ standard-library runtime, also called VC10. Microsoft’s debug runtime naming convention normally adds a trailing d to the filename. Microsoft documents both the naming convention and the fact that debug runtime libraries are intended for development and testing rather than normal application redistribution. Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Some file databases describe this DLL with the internal description “Microsoft C Runtime Library.” That description is imprecise for diagnosis. The MSVCP family is associated with the C++ standard library, while the related MSVCR family is associated with the C runtime.

msvcp100d.dll is not normally a protected Windows system component. It may be present in a Visual Studio installation, on a developer’s controlled test machine, or incorrectly bundled with an application that was built in Debug mode.
Microsoft’s file table documents an Msvcp100d.dll build with version 10.0.40219.447, but that does not mean every legitimate copy has that exact version. Versions and file sizes can vary by servicing level and architecture.
First confirm what is actually failing
Before changing Windows, record the details of the failure. They determine whether this is a release-runtime problem, a debug-build problem, an application packaging defect, or an architecture mismatch.
Write down:
- The exact filename, including whether it ends in
d. - The name of the application, game, emulator, installer, or utility.
- The complete error message.
- Whether the issue started after an update, reinstall, antivirus detection, disk cleanup, or moving the application.
- Whether the affected program is your own build or a developer/test version.
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether other programs fail in the same way.
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because MSVCP100D.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because MSVCP100D.dll was not found.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- A generic Bad Image message stating that a file is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be reporting that a dependency of the DLL could not be loaded. Similarly, Bad Image is a general loader message and does not by itself prove that msvcp100d.dll is corrupt.
If you are an end user
For a game, old application, emulator, utility, driver package, or installer, follow these steps in order.
1. Repair the affected application
Windows provides a repair option for many applications.
For a supported Windows application:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The repair option may preserve the application’s settings and user data. If Windows does not offer Repair, use the program’s own maintenance option or continue to the next step. Microsoft documents these application repair paths in Repair apps and programs in Windows.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
A successful repair replaces incomplete or damaged application files. If the same msvcp100d.dll error returns immediately, the application may contain a Debug executable or a Debug third-party library.
2. Verify game or launcher files
If the error affects a game or an application managed by a launcher, use the launcher’s Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair command.
The wording varies by launcher, but the process normally works like this:
- Open the official launcher.
- Open your library.
- Select the affected game or program.
- Open its settings or three-dot menu.
- Choose Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files.
- Wait for the scan to finish.
- Allow the launcher to redownload missing or changed files.
- Restart the launcher and test the program.
Do not separately download msvcp100d.dll to replace the file. If verification restores the error-free executable, the problem was likely an incomplete update, damaged local file, or incorrectly selected program build. If verification repeatedly restores a package that requests the debug DLL, the vendor likely shipped the wrong build.
3. Reinstall from the official application source
If repair and file verification do not work, reinstall the affected program.
- Save any important settings or game saves according to the application vendor’s instructions.
- Uninstall the application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps, or from Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer again from the application’s official source or your official game platform.
- Temporarily close other installers and overlays.
- Install the program using an administrator account if the installer requests it.
- Start the application before restoring optional plug-ins or modifications.
A clean reinstall fixes an incomplete application package, but it cannot correct a defective installer that was built in Debug mode. If the installer itself displays the msvcp100d.dll error, obtain a corrected installer from the vendor.
4. Check Windows Security quarantine
If the program worked previously and the error appeared immediately after a security scan, Windows Security may have quarantined a local application file.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection associated with the affected application.
- Confirm the original file path and application source.
Do not restore a quarantined DLL automatically. First reinstall the complete application from its official source and verify its digital signature where available. Restore or allow the file only when you have confirmed that the application is trusted and the detection is a false positive. Microsoft explains these decisions in Protection History in the Windows Security app.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make an application start. If the file is malicious or has been modified, restoring it can create a larger security problem.
5. Determine whether the filename was misread
Many users see msvcp100.dll and msvcp100d.dll as nearly identical filenames. The distinction changes the solution.
If the complete error names msvcp100.dll without the final d, install the official Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable that matches the application architecture. Microsoft’s download page provides these package names:
vcredist_x86.exefor 32-bit applicationsvcredist_x64.exefor 64-bit applicationsvcredist_ia64.exefor Itanium systems
The official package is available from the Microsoft Download Center. Microsoft lists the Visual C++ 2010 SP1 release redistributable as version 10.0.40219.325 in its supported Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.

6. Match 32-bit and 64-bit architecture
A 32-bit program needs 32-bit native dependencies. A 64-bit program needs 64-bit native dependencies. A 64-bit version of Windows can run both kinds of applications, but it does not make an x64 DLL compatible with an x86 executable.
On 64-bit Windows, the folder names are especially confusing:
System32normally contains 64-bit system files.SysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system files.
This is historical Windows naming and does not mean that you should manually place a downloaded DLL in either directory. Microsoft describes the behavior in File System Redirector.
Recommended Free Tools
To identify the application architecture, check the application’s documentation or vendor support information. For your own executable, inspect its build configuration or use a trusted PE inspection tool. Do not assume that installing both redistributable packages will solve a request for the debug DLL.
A wrong-architecture file can produce a missing-DLL error, a Bad Image error, or error 0xc000007b. The correct fix is to obtain the application and all of its native dependencies for the same architecture.
7. Reinstall the complete driver or hardware utility package
A hardware manufacturer’s control panel, diagnostic utility, emulator, or driver installer can also be the program displaying the error. In that case, reinstall the complete package from the hardware manufacturer rather than treating msvcp100d.dll as a driver file.
For a basic Device Manager check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Device Manager may report that the best driver is already installed even when the manufacturer has a newer complete software package. If the error began after a driver update, use Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver when that option is available, or reinstall the previous package from the manufacturer.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchUpdating a device driver will not normally recreate msvcp100d.dll. It is relevant only when the failing program is part of a driver or hardware software package.
When manually checking dozens of driver versions is taking longer than the actual diagnosis, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan the system and show which drivers are stale; its free scan identifies the issue, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and the hardware manufacturer’s complete package remains the definitive source for this application-specific DLL error.
8. Check Windows Features only when the application specifically requires one
Windows Features is not a normal source for msvcp100d.dll. Turning unrelated features on and off will not install the Visual C++ 2010 debug runtime.
If the application’s own documentation specifically requires an optional Windows component:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Search for Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the result.
- Select only the feature named by the application.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the application again.
Do not enable random legacy components as a substitute for repairing the application. .NET Framework, DirectX, and Windows Features are separate technologies and do not normally recreate a missing Visual C++ 2010 debug DLL.
If you are a developer or tester
A Debug build legitimately depends on debug runtime libraries. The correct solution is different from the consumer repair path.
Install the matching Visual Studio environment
If you built the program or are debugging an old native application, install the Visual Studio development environment that matches the program’s toolset. For a VC10 application, that generally means the Visual C++ 2010 development tools or a controlled environment that contains the matching debug libraries.
Microsoft allows debug runtime deployment for testing on controlled machines, but debug libraries are not intended for ordinary redistribution. A developer should not solve a customer-facing deployment error by copying debug DLLs into an installer.
For a program that should be released to ordinary users:
- Open the project in the matching development environment.
- Select Project → Properties.
- Set Configuration to the affected configuration.
- Open Configuration Properties → C/C++ → Code Generation.
- Check Runtime Library.
- Use the release setting appropriate to the project, normally
/MDrather than/MDd. - Repeat the check for every native project and configuration.
- Rebuild the application and all native dependencies.
- Test the rebuilt package on a clean machine.
Microsoft documents /MDd as the debug DLL runtime option and /MD as the release DLL runtime option in Runtime Library compiler options.

A release executable can still request msvcp100d.dll if it links against a Debug version of OpenCV, Qt, a plug-in, emulator component, or another native library. Every linked module must use compatible compiler, architecture, and runtime settings.
Rebuild all native dependencies consistently
Check the following when the application itself appears to be a release build:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- The application’s compiler generation.
- The architecture of the executable.
- The architecture of every native library.
- Debug versus Release configuration.
/MDversus/MDd.- The selected library directories.
- Plug-ins loaded at runtime.
- The runtime settings used by third-party libraries.
A common failure occurs when a release application accidentally selects a library directory containing VC10 Debug binaries. Replacing that dependency with its matching Release build is the definitive fix.
If a program launches only when started from the developer environment, compare the environment’s library search paths with the deployed application directory. Do not assume that copying files from the development computer into a customer’s Windows directory is a valid deployment method.
Debug deployment belongs on controlled test machines
For remote debugging or internal testing, use a matching Visual Studio installation or Microsoft’s documented debug deployment procedure. Keep the test machine controlled and clearly separate from the customer distribution package.
If another developer asks for the DLL as a standalone file, first establish:
- Which Visual Studio update produced the executable.
- Whether the executable is x86, x64, or another architecture.
- Whether all dependent libraries use the same toolset.
- Whether the file came from a legitimate Visual Studio installation.
- Whether the machine is a controlled test system.
Do not upload or redistribute the debug runtime as a general application prerequisite.
Repair Windows components only when evidence points to Windows corruption
Because Windows does not normally provide msvcp100d.dll as a protected system component, Windows component corruption is a lower-probability cause of this exact filename. Consider it when multiple Windows programs are failing, system files have been damaged, or other repair symptoms are present.
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Search for
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish successfully.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft documents this order and these commands in Using System File Checker in Windows.
DISM and SFC repair Windows component corruption. They will not normally install a missing Visual Studio debug runtime or correct an application that shipped a Debug executable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen repeated manual DISM and SFC runs leave you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying system issues and show what it found; its free scan identifies problems, while repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the bad dependency.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but the same application still requests msvcp100d.dll, the result points toward the application package, a third-party native dependency, or a Debug/Release mismatch.
Use System Restore only as a last-resort rollback
System Restore is useful when the problem began immediately after a broader system change and a restore point exists. It is not a replacement for repairing a defective application installer.
To check for a restore point:
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Review the available restore points.
- Choose one created before the failure began.
- Select Next.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish if the rollback is appropriate.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft describes System Restore and other recovery choices in Recovery options in Windows.

Why regsvr32 does not fix this error
Do not try to register msvcp100d.dll as a repair step:
regsvr32 msvcp100d.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or OLE DLLs that export the DllRegisterServer function. A Visual C++ runtime library is a runtime dependency, not a COM component. Running the command commonly produces an error stating that the entry point was not found, and it does not repair the application’s dependency chain.
Microsoft explains this limitation in Regsvr32 troubleshooting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random DLL website
Standalone DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or modified files.
- The wrong Visual C++ update.
- The wrong architecture.
- A file with incompatible dependencies.
- A file that only hides the original packaging problem.
Use the official application installer, the official game platform, or a legitimate Visual Studio installation. If the filename is actually msvcp100.dll, use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable page.
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
Manual copying can create architecture conflicts, DLL search-order problems, and security exposure. It can also make a later application repair harder to diagnose.
The correct location for an application dependency is determined by the application package and its loader configuration. It is not automatically a Windows system folder.
Do not install Visual C++ 2015–2022 or newer as a substitute
Newer Visual C++ runtimes do not automatically satisfy every VC10 dependency. Visual C++ 2013 and earlier runtime families remain side by side with later versions. Installing a current redistributable may be useful for a different application, but it does not normally provide msvcp100d.dll.

Frequently asked questions
Will the Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable install msvcp100d.dll?
Normally, no. The release redistributable is intended to provide release runtime files such as msvcp100.dll. msvcp100d.dll is the Debug runtime and is not intended for ordinary redistribution.
Should I install both x86 and x64 packages?
Install the architecture required by the application. On 64-bit Windows, many users need both packages because they run both 32-bit and 64-bit programs. Installing both still does not normally provide the debug file ending in d.
Is msvcp100d.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file?
No. It is associated with Visual Studio 2010 and is not normally expected on a clean Windows installation.
Can I replace it with msvcp100.dll?
No. The filenames identify different runtime configurations. A Debug executable should not be repaired by renaming or substituting a Release DLL.
Why did installing the latest Visual C++ runtime not help?
The newer runtime family is separate from the VC10 runtime. A program compiled for Visual C++ 2010 may require its corresponding release runtime, and a Debug build may require the matching Visual Studio debug environment.
What if the DLL is beside the program but the error remains?
Check architecture, corruption, and dependent libraries. The presence of a file does not prove that Windows can load it or that it matches the executable.
Can SFC restore this file?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It does not normally recreate a Visual Studio debug runtime that belongs to an application or development environment.
Should I use regsvr32?
No. regsvr32 is for self-registering COM/OLE DLLs. It does not repair Visual C++ runtime dependencies.
What if the error appears during an installer?
The installer may itself be a Debug or incorrectly packaged executable. Reinstalling the target application cannot correct a defective installer. Download a corrected installer from the official vendor.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if the problem started after changing OpenCV, Qt, an emulator, or a plug-in?
Check that all native components use the same compiler generation, architecture, and Debug/Release configuration. Replace any Debug dependency with its matching Release build for a consumer application.
What if several programs suddenly fail?
Run a malware scan, check recent system changes, and consider broader Windows repair. Run DISM followed by SFC if there are signs of component corruption. System Restore is a later recovery option, not the first response to a single application failure.
Final checklist
Before contacting support, gather:
- The exact filename, including the final
d. - The complete error text.
- The affected application or installer.
- The application version.
- Whether the program is x86 or x64.
- Your Windows edition and architecture.
- Whether repair, verification, and reinstall were attempted.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined a file.
- Whether DISM and SFC completed successfully.
- Whether the error began after an update, driver change, or antivirus event.
For an ordinary Windows user, the practical conclusion is clear: msvcp100d.dll identifies a Visual C++ 2010 Debug dependency. Repair or reinstall the application first. If the application was distributed to consumers with this dependency, the vendor must provide a corrected Release build.
