When msvcp60.dll is missing, damaged, incompatible, or loaded from the wrong folder, repair the affected application or its original VC6 prerequisite instead of downloading a random DLL.
The safest repair order is:
- Identify the program producing the error.
- Repair or reinstall that program.
- Verify the game files if a launcher offers that function.
- Restore the correct legacy VC6 runtime from a trusted installer.
- Check 32-bit versus 64-bit paths and duplicate copies.
- Investigate
msvcrt.dll, antivirus quarantine, Windows corruption, and recent system changes.
Do not copy an unknown msvcp60.dll into System32, and do not run regsvr32 on it. This is a C++ runtime library, not a COM component that normally requires registration.

What msvcp60.dll is
msvcp60.dll is part of Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0. Its documented role is to provide C++ Standard Library support for native applications built with that compiler family. Microsoft identifies msvcp[version].dll files as C++ Standard Library DLLs used by native applications. See Microsoft’s documentation on which DLLs Visual C++ applications redistribute.
It is associated with:
- Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0
- Older Windows desktop utilities
- Legacy business software
- Older games and game launchers
- Programs that use other VC6 files such as
msvcrt.dll,msvcirt.dll, MFC libraries, or vendor-specific runtime files
It is not:
msvbvm60.dll, which belongs to the Visual Basic 6 runtime- A DirectX component
- A .NET Framework assembly
- A normal hardware-driver file
- A file supplied universally by modern Visual C++ 2015–2026 redistributables
Visual Studio 6.0 is obsolete and unsupported. A legacy application may still work on Windows 10 or Windows 11, but its installer, runtime assumptions, and file-loading behavior may not be compatible with every current Windows configuration. Microsoft’s Visual Studio servicing information documents the discontinued status of that product generation.
#1 Best Overall
There is no single msvcp60.dll version that is correct for every old program. Microsoft historical documentation lists different VC6-era builds, and an application may depend on a private copy supplied by its own installer. The version of a file found on one computer should not automatically be copied to another.
Read the exact error before changing files
The wording usually tells you whether the problem is absence, corruption, or incompatibility.
“MSVCP60.dll was not found”
A common message is:
This application has failed to start because MSVCP60.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

This usually means the application cannot locate a usable copy. The file may genuinely be absent, or Windows may be unable to load it because a dependency is missing, the architecture is wrong, or the application is searching a different directory.
“The application or DLL … is not a valid Windows image”
This usually points to corruption, an incompatible replacement, or the wrong architecture. It does not prove that the file is malware, but it does mean that replacing it with another arbitrary Internet copy is unsafe.
“The procedure entry point could not be located”
This usually means that the DLL exists but does not export the function expected by the application. A wrong runtime version or a duplicate local copy is more likely than simple absence.
“The file is linked to missing export MSVCRT.dll”
This is a dependency or compatibility problem involving msvcrt.dll, not necessarily a problem that can be solved by replacing msvcp60.dll alone. Microsoft documented this type of error for older games including Age of Mythology and related titles in archived support documentation.
“Error 1309. Error reading from file: MSVCP60.DLL”
This can occur when an installer’s media is incomplete or its redistributable directory is missing. In that situation, repair the installation source or obtain the complete vendor installer rather than searching for a standalone DLL.
Fix 1: Identify the program and its executable path
Time needed: 2 to 5 minutes
Before repairing Windows, determine exactly which application is failing. The DLL name alone does not identify the correct program.
Look for:
- The application or game name in the error dialog
- The executable named in Task Manager or a shortcut
- The full path shown in the message
- Whether the failure occurs when launching the program, installing it, or starting Windows
- Whether only one program fails or several unrelated programs fail
To inspect a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
- Select Cancel when finished.
To inspect a running or recently failed process:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- Look for the program’s executable name.
- Right-click it and select Open file location when available.
If only one old program fails, focus first on that program’s installer and local files. If several Windows components fail, continue to the system-repair steps later in this guide.
Fix 2: Repair the affected application
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
The most reliable fix for an application-specific msvcp60.dll error is to repair or reinstall the application. Its installer may contain the exact VC6 runtime version, companion files, and local directory structure that the program expects.

For an application that appears in modern Windows settings:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options when available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the program again.
Microsoft describes this process in its guide to repairing apps and programs in Windows.
The Repair option normally preserves the program and its user data. If it is unavailable or does not help, return to the same page and use Reset only if you understand that the action may remove application data and settings.
Classic desktop program repair
For older desktop applications:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the affected program.
- Right-click it.
- Select Repair or Change if offered.
- Allow the installer to complete.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Test the program again.
If no repair option exists:
- Uninstall the affected program from Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer or a current installer supplied by the software vendor.
- Allow all prerequisite components to install.
- Launch the program from its newly installed shortcut.
A successful repair means the program launches without the msvcp60.dll message. If the same error returns immediately, the installer may not include the required runtime, the application may be loading a wrong local copy, or another dependency such as msvcrt.dll may be involved.

Fix 3: Verify the game or application files
Time needed: 5 to 30 minutes
If the error belongs to a game, use the launcher’s file-verification function before copying anything manually. Verification can restore deleted or damaged files and is especially useful when antivirus software quarantined a file or an update was interrupted.
The exact wording varies by launcher. Look for commands such as:
- Verify
- Verify files
- Repair
- Scan and repair
- Check installation
A typical process is:
- Open the game launcher.
- Open the library or installed-games list.
- Select the affected game.
- Open its menu or settings.
- Choose Verify, Repair, or the equivalent.
- Wait for the scan to finish.
- Allow the launcher to redownload or restore damaged files.
- Start the game again.
Verification should not normally affect saved data, but review the launcher’s own confirmation message before proceeding. If verification reports that files are repeatedly missing, investigate antivirus quarantine and disk or installation problems rather than repeatedly downloading individual DLLs.
Fix 4: Restore the correct Visual C++ 6.0 prerequisite
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
Some programs explicitly require the old Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 redistributable. The historical package names include Vcredist.exe and VC6RedistSetup_enu.exe. Microsoft’s archived VC6 redistributable documentation describes the runtime files needed by applications built with Visual C++ 6.0.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse this order:
- Check the application’s installation folder for a prerequisite,
redist, runtime, orsupportfolder. - Check the original installation media for a VC6 redistributable installer.
- Check the application vendor’s official support or download page.
- If the vendor directs you to historical Microsoft Visual Studio 6 material, use the Microsoft-provided package or documentation.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Launch the affected application again.
Microsoft also published Visual Studio 6 Service Pack 6 material, including redistributable information, in its archived SP6 documentation. Historical Microsoft download links may no longer be available, so do not treat an old URL as a guaranteed current download.
The modern supported Visual C++ redistributable documentation is useful when an application requires a newer runtime such as msvcp140.dll. It should not be presented as a universal replacement for the VC6 msvcp60.dll runtime.
If the application’s installer bundles its own runtime, prefer that installer. A vendor-local copy may be deliberately matched to the program and may belong beside the executable rather than in a Windows system directory.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit versus 64-bit architecture
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
The documented VC6 copies of msvcp60.dll are typically x86, meaning 32-bit. A 32-bit application can require this DLL even when Windows 10 or Windows 11 is installed on a 64-bit computer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →On 64-bit Windows:
- 32-bit centrally deployed DLLs normally belong under
%WINDIR%\SysWOW64 - 64-bit centrally deployed DLLs normally belong under
%WINDIR%\System32 - An application may instead use a private copy beside its executable
The names are confusing because System32 is the normal system directory for 64-bit components, while SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit components on 64-bit Windows. Microsoft explains these central and local deployment rules in its Visual C++ deployment documentation.
Do not move files between these folders to experiment.
Determine whether the program is 32-bit
The most reliable source is the application vendor or installer documentation. You can also inspect the executable with a trusted system or developer utility that identifies PE architecture.
Rank #3
Practical clues include:
- A very old application is commonly 32-bit.
- A program installed under a legacy folder may still be 32-bit.
- A 64-bit Windows installation does not make a 32-bit program 64-bit.
- Installing only an x64 modern redistributable does not satisfy an old x86 VC6 dependency.
Check for duplicate copies
Look in these locations:
- The application’s executable folder
- The application’s
bin, redist, or support folder - Installation media
%WINDIR%\System32%WINDIR%\SysWOW64
Finding a file is not proof that Windows is loading that copy. The application may load a private copy beside its executable, or it may be finding a duplicate earlier in its search path.
If you find multiple copies, record their full paths and file properties. Do not overwrite the copies before identifying which installer supplied them.
Fix 6: Investigate an msvcrt.dll mismatch
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
If the error mentions a missing export from MSVCRT.dll, replacing msvcp60.dll repeatedly is unlikely to help. msvcp60.dll and msvcrt.dll must be compatible with the application and with each other.
This problem can follow:
- An incomplete application installation
- A damaged Windows installation
- An incompatible file copied from another computer
- A local application folder containing an unintended runtime
- A legacy program being used with files from a different Windows release
Start with application repair or reinstall. If the program is old and its installer contains a known prerequisite, install that prerequisite through the program’s setup process.
Do not copy msvcrt.dll from another computer. Even when two files have the same name, their Windows build, architecture, exports, and servicing state may differ.
Recommended Free Tools
If Windows itself reports broader system failures, continue with DISM and SFC. If only one application reports the export error, the application’s own installation remains the most likely repair path.
Fix 7: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine a legacy runtime after an installation, update, or scan. It may also remove a file because a damaged installer or bundled program appears suspicious.
To inspect Microsoft Defender history:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Open any entry that names the affected program or
msvcp60.dll. - Record the detected file path and action.
Do not immediately restore the file. First confirm:
- The path belongs to the application you intended to install.
- The file came from the original vendor installer.
- The application installer has not been tampered with.
- A current security scan does not identify a broader infection.
Microsoft explains quarantine and restore decisions in its guide to Protection History.
If the file is a confirmed false positive, reinstalling the application from a trusted source is generally safer than restoring an isolated DLL. If the same file is quarantined again, stop restoring it and investigate the installer, application, and security detection.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself is damaged or several Windows components are failing. They are not a universal repair for a private DLL bundled inside one third-party application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected system files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: review the CBS log and continue with application-specific repair rather than copying an Internet DLL.
If you are repeatedly hunting through Windows versions, component stores, and SFC logs without knowing which file changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows detected problems, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when the DLL is privately bundled with that program.
Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance explains the supported DISM and SFC sequence. If SFC cannot repair a protected Windows file, inspect the CBS log before considering any replacement. The documented manual-replacement procedure applies to a known-good copy of the same system file, not an unknown DLL downloaded from the Internet.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after:
- Installing or updating an application
- Removing software
- Installing a driver
- Running a cleanup utility
- Changing system components
- Applying a system modification
It restores system files, registry settings, and installed programs while preserving personal files.
To start it:
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the
msvcp60.dllerror began. - Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the applications and drivers that will be changed.
- Select Close after reviewing.
- Select Next.
- Select Finish.
- Confirm the restart.
Do not interrupt the restore process. After Windows starts, test the application before reinstalling other software. If the error returns after a particular application or driver update, repair that software instead of repeatedly using System Restore.
Fix 10: Handle a Windows startup error separately
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours
If msvcp60.dll appears during Windows startup, the situation is different from one old application failing. The error may name services.exe, appear before the desktop loads, or be accompanied by several system failures.
Use this order:
- Enter the Windows Recovery Environment if normal startup is not possible.
- Choose Troubleshoot.
- Open Advanced options.
- Try System Restore.
- If necessary, use Command Prompt for an offline repair.
- Run offline SFC or DISM only with the correct Windows installation source and drive letters.
- Restart and test Windows.
Do not copy msvcp60.dll from another computer into System32 merely because the filenames match. The correct file must match the Windows build, architecture, servicing state, and provenance.
If startup repair does not resolve the issue, check whether a legacy startup program or service is loading the DLL. A clean boot can help isolate third-party startup interference:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
msconfig. - Press Enter.
- On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services.
- Select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab.
- Select Open Task Manager.
- Disable nonessential startup entries.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
- Restore normal startup when finished.
Microsoft documents the clean-boot process and the need to restore normal startup afterward in its clean boot instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 11: Check drivers only when the affected program is hardware-related
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
A graphics or hardware driver is not a normal provider of msvcp60.dll. Driver work belongs near the end of the repair order and is appropriate only when:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The error names an OEM control panel or hardware utility.
- The affected program was installed with a device package.
- The hardware vendor specifically identifies a damaged bundled runtime.
- The problem began immediately after a driver installation.
To inspect a driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only when you have a trusted driver source.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, use Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
Do not reinstall unrelated graphics, chipset, audio, or network drivers simply because a DLL error appears.
When the manual process means checking many hardware vendors and guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and it should not replace repairing the specific application that owns the msvcp60.dll dependency.
Fix 12: Do not use Windows Features or regsvr32 as guesses
Time needed: 2 to 10 minutes
msvcp60.dll is not normally installed by enabling a Windows optional feature. DirectX, .NET, and legacy Windows components are separate from the VC6 C++ runtime.
You can inspect optional features when application documentation specifically requires one:
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the listed features.
- Enable a feature only when the application vendor or Microsoft documentation explicitly requires it.
- Select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable random legacy components as a substitute for reinstalling the program. Enabling .NET or DirectPlay, for example, does not normally install msvcp60.dll.
regsvr32 is also the wrong tool for this file. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. Microsoft documents the purpose and syntax of regsvr32.
Running:
regsvr32 msvcp60.dll
usually produces an error saying that the module was loaded but the entry point was not found. That does not mean the runtime needs a different registration command. C++ runtime libraries are loaded by the application’s dependency mechanism and do not normally require COM registration.
Best Value
When manual copying is defensible
Manual copying should be the exception, not the standard repair.
Recommended Free Tools
It may be defensible when all of the following are known:
- The application vendor explicitly instructs you to do it.
- The source is the original installer or trusted installation media.
- The DLL’s architecture matches the executable.
- The version is intended for that application.
- The destination is the application’s documented private directory.
- The file has been checked for provenance and digital signature where applicable.
- You have preserved the original file and can undo the change.
Even then, restore the complete runtime package when possible. Copying only msvcp60.dll may leave msvcrt.dll, msvcirt.dll, MFC files, or other dependencies missing or mismatched.
Never download this file from a random DLL website. The file may contain malware, may have the wrong architecture, may be a different build, may lack a valid Microsoft signature, or may simply fail because the actual problem is a missing dependency or wrong search path. The safe sources are:
- The affected program’s original installer
- The software vendor’s official installer or prerequisite package
- A legitimate Microsoft VC6 redistributable or Visual Studio 6 service-pack package when the application specifically requires it
- Windows servicing tools when Windows itself owns the damaged component
A file found in System32 is not automatically the correct file for every program, and a file found beside an executable is not automatically safe.

Frequently asked questions
Is msvcp60.dll part of Windows?
It is a Microsoft runtime file associated with Visual C++ 6.0. Legacy Windows versions and application installers may include copies, but it should not be treated as guaranteed on every current Windows installation.
Is msvcp60.dll the same as msvbvm60.dll?
No. msvcp60.dll is associated with the Visual C++ 6.0 C++ Standard Library. msvbvm60.dll belongs to the Visual Basic 6 runtime. Installing or repairing one does not automatically repair the other.
Will the current Visual C++ redistributable fix it?
Not necessarily. Current redistributables target newer Visual C++ runtime generations. They should not be presented as a universal replacement for the VC6 msvcp60.dll dependency. Use the application’s own prerequisite or a legitimate VC6 package when the program specifically requires VC6.
Should I put msvcp60.dll in System32?
Do not decide based only on the filename. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use a centrally deployed copy under SysWOW64, or it may require a private copy beside its executable. The installer should determine the correct destination.
Why does the program say the DLL is missing when the file exists?
Windows may be finding the wrong copy, rejecting the architecture, failing to load a dependency, searching another directory, or encountering a corrupt file. Record the full path of every copy before changing anything.
Will SFC repair msvcp60.dll?
Only if the affected copy is a protected Windows system file. SFC is not a replacement for reinstalling a third-party application’s private runtime.
Should I run regsvr32 msvcp60.dll?
No. msvcp60.dll is not normally a COM or ActiveX component and does not require registration.
What if the error names MSVCRT.dll?
Repair or reinstall the affected application and investigate compatibility between msvcp60.dll and msvcrt.dll. Do not keep replacing one file while ignoring the export error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if antivirus removed the file?
Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Confirm the file’s path and source before restoring anything. Reinstalling the application from trusted media is generally safer than restoring an isolated DLL.
What information should I provide when asking for help?
Include:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- The affected program or game
- The exact dialog text
- The executable path
- The path of any
msvcp60.dllcopy found - Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether
msvcrt.dllis also mentioned - Whether antivirus quarantined anything
- Whether the problem began after installing, updating, uninstalling, cleaning, or restoring software
That evidence distinguishes a missing runtime from a wrong architecture, duplicate local copy, dependency mismatch, antivirus action, or broader Windows corruption.
