mswb7.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows word-breaker component, not a standalone program or a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime. If Windows reports that mswb7.dll is missing, not found, corrupted, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
A word breaker splits text into searchable words for Windows Search and Microsoft SQL Server Full-Text Search. On 64-bit Windows, the normal system location is associated with %WINDIR%System32; 32-bit applications use the corresponding 32-bit system component under %WINDIR%SysWOW64. The exact application showing the message cannot be identified from the filename alone.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair system files
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the safest first fix when the file is absent or damaged. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the Windows component store that SFC uses as its replacement source.
1. Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the application or feature that reported the error.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
2. Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows when it finishes.
3. Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test again.

A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and run sfc /scannow a second time.
While you are manually comparing repair output and repeating DISM and SFC, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems and show what needs attention; its repair actions are handled by the full version, so it is optional and not required for the Microsoft repair process.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not replace mswb7.dll with a random download. Use a matching Windows installation source instead:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual Windows folder on your repair media. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and a sufficiently compatible build. Microsoft’s system-file repair instructions explain the source requirements.

Do not use a file name alone to decide whether a copy is genuine. A malicious or unrelated file can use the same name.
Check the Windows directories
- Press Windows + E.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter:
%WINDIR%System32
- Press Enter.
- Search for
MSWB7.dll.
On 64-bit Windows, also check:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64
The presence or absence of the file is useful evidence, but it does not prove that the file is the one being loaded. An application may be loading another copy from its own directory or from another DLL search location.
Verify the digital signature
- Right-click
MSWB7.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the listed signer.
- Select Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid digital signature.
If the file is unsigned, the signature is invalid, or the file is located in an unexpected application folder, do not whitelist it or copy it into System32. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and continue with Windows repair.
Microsoft does not publish one universal public table containing the hash, size, path, and version for every Windows release and architecture. Historical version lists on file-index pages do not establish that a copy matches your installation.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
An antivirus action can make a genuine system component appear to be missing. It can also identify an unauthorized replacement.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
MSWB7.dll. - Open the detection details and note the file path and detection name.
Restore the file only when all of these checks make sense:
- The path is an expected Windows system location.
- The file has a valid Microsoft signature.
- The detection details indicate a false positive.
- You have reviewed the warning and are confident the file is not a threat.
Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the device. If the file is unsigned, repeatedly recreated, or found outside an expected Windows or application directory, leave it quarantined and run a full scan instead. After a confirmed false positive, run DISM and SFC to restore the component through Windows servicing.
See Microsoft’s Protection History guidance for the restore workflow.

Fix 4: Repair the application that reports the error
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If only one application fails while Windows Search and other programs work normally, the message may be caused by that application’s damaged installation, dependency, or DLL search path. The filename alone does not prove that Windows is the root cause.
Repair a Microsoft Store application
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If it still fails, select Reset, if available.
Resetting can remove local application data, so use it only after trying Repair.

- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent option before reinstalling the entire game.
Do not place a downloaded mswb7.dll beside the executable. That can hide the original problem, create a version mismatch, or cause Windows to load an unexpected copy.
Fix 5: Check SQL Server Full-Text Search
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
SQL Server uses Microsoft word breakers for Full-Text Search. If the error appears only when a SQL Server database performs full-text indexing or querying, investigate SQL Server rather than installing a general-purpose DLL.
- Confirm whether the failure occurs only during Full-Text Search operations.
- Check the SQL Server service and application logs.
- Review the registered filters and word breakers in the SQL Server installation.
- Repair or update the affected SQL Server installation using its official setup media.
- Test the full-text catalog again.
Microsoft documents MSWB7.dll as a word-breaker filename for multiple languages, including English and German. Review the SQL Server word-breaker documentation and the guidance for viewing or changing registered filters and word breakers.
If ordinary Windows applications also fail, return to DISM and SFC. SQL Server repair alone will not correct a damaged Windows component.

Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 10 minutes
A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows uses different system redirection and DLL search behavior from a 64-bit application. A compatible Windows installation should provide the appropriate system component; copying a file between System32, SysWOW64, and an application folder is not a safe architecture fix.
To identify the application architecture, check its documentation or installation directory. You can also inspect the process in Task Manager:

- Compare the reported platform with the application’s requirements.
If only a 32-bit application fails, repair or reinstall that application. If both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows features fail, repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.
Fix 7: Investigate drivers only when the evidence points there
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
mswb7.dll is not normally a device driver file, so updating a graphics, audio, chipset, or network driver is not a direct repair for this error. Use Device Manager only if the same incident includes a device warning or a separate hardware failure.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device with a warning icon.
- Select Properties and review the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not use a driver update as a substitute for repairing mswb7.dll. If you are hunting through many device vendors and versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues and identify available driver updates; its driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is optional.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL fixer
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for restoring missing or corrupted system files.
A Windows word breaker should normally be restored through Windows servicing, application repair, or the relevant SQL Server installation. Running a command such as this without knowing that the DLL requires COM registration can produce another error without fixing the original problem:
regsvr32 MSWB7.dll
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor or Microsoft documentation explicitly requires registration for that specific component. Microsoft explains its behavior in the regsvr32 documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEscalate when repair tools cannot fix it
If the error began immediately after an update, failed upgrade, cleanup operation, or software installation, try these recovery paths in order:
- Retry Windows Update and restart.
- Run DISM followed by SFC.
- Use matching Windows installation media if DISM cannot find source files.
- Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- Perform an in-place Windows repair installation.
- Contact the affected application or SQL Server vendor if only that product fails.
To open System Restore:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore can revert system files and settings without removing personal files, but it does not replace a backup.

FAQ
Is mswb7.dll part of Windows or a third-party runtime?
It is a Microsoft Windows word-breaker component used by Windows Search and SQL Server Full-Text Search. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET file.
Should I download mswb7.dll from a DLL website?
No. An isolated download can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, mismatch your Windows build, or fail to repair the underlying component. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or the affected application’s official installer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a general fix for this file. Those packages address different runtimes, and there is no verified connection between installing them and repairing the Windows word breaker.
Should I enable something in Windows Features?
Do not randomly enable or disable Windows Features for this error. Windows Search and SQL Server Full-Text Search have different installation contexts. Repair the Windows component or the specific application that reports the failure.
Does the Media Feature Pack fix this file?
Normally, no. The Media Feature Pack addresses omitted media technologies in Windows N editions, not a damaged mswb7.dll. Use it only when the symptoms specifically concern missing media functionality. See Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack guidance.
What does “entry point not found” mean?
It often indicates a version or dependency mismatch rather than simple absence. Identify the exact executable that fails, check whether it is loading an unexpected copy, repair the application, and then repair Windows if necessary.
SFC repaired files, but the error remains. What next?
Restart Windows, run the application again, and identify the exact failing executable. Check application logs or Event Viewer, verify the application architecture, and repair or reinstall that application. The reported DLL can be the first failed dependency rather than the true root cause.
