mswsosp.dll is a legitimate, historical Microsoft Winsock 2 service-provider DLL, but it is not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 download target. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load it, the safest solution is usually to repair the older program that requested it, not to copy a random DLL into System32.
What this file actually does
mswsosp.dll belongs to the Windows Sockets 2 networking architecture. Historical Windows 95 documentation lists it among the Winsock 2 runtime components, and the file is associated primarily with the 32-bit Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Me era.
It is not:
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A .NET assembly
- A device driver
- A current Windows 10 or Windows 11 redistributable
Modern Windows uses the current Winsock implementation. Applications normally interact with it through Ws2_32.dll and provider components such as mswsock.dll. Microsoft explains that Winsock service providers are loaded through the Winsock Service Provider Interface and expose functions such as WSPStartup through that interface.
The similar name matters. mswsock.dll is a current Windows component, while mswsosp.dll is an older filename. Check the spelling carefully before repairing anything.

Historical Windows 9x installations commonly placed the file in:
C:WindowsSystem
Do not assume that C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is the correct location on a modern computer. The correct path depends on the operating system, the application and the original installation.

The wording “The program can’t start because mswsosp.dll is missing” and similar messages is commonly reported by DLL-index pages, not an official Microsoft error catalog. Treat the wording as a clue, then identify the program that produced it.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected program
This is the safest and most likely fix when the error occurs with one game or application.

- Close the error message.
- Note the program name in the window title or the first line of the message.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Record the full path and executable name.
If the message appears at startup:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry matching the program or its publisher.
- Right-click it and select Open file location, if available.
- Record the executable name and folder.
Do not replace the DLL until you know which executable is requesting it.
Step 2: Try the program’s repair option
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Some desktop applications instead provide repair from their original installer. Run the installer from the program’s official source and choose Repair when offered.
For a game installed through a launcher, open that launcher and use its Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function. This restores files from the program’s own trusted package rather than from a generic DLL website.

Step 3: Reinstall if repair fails
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or run the installer supplied by the application’s developer.
- Install the program again.
- Restart once more and test it.
If the program came from original optical media or an archived installer, keep a copy of the installer and read its system requirements first. A Windows 9x-era program may not run correctly on a modern 64-bit system even after its files are restored.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and the DLL path
An antivirus product may quarantine a file after a detection, or malware cleanup may remove a suspicious copy. The location is important.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
mswsosp.dll. - Expand the event and note the original file path.
- Do not restore the file immediately if it was located in a user-writable folder, a temporary folder or beside an unrelated modern executable.
- If the file belonged to the original application folder and the detection is clearly a false positive, restore it only after confirming the program’s source and scanning the installation.
Then run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If malware may still be active, use Microsoft Defender Antivirus offline scan from the same Scan options page. Save open work first because Windows will restart.
If the file disappeared after disk errors or a malware incident, reinstalling the affected program or restoring a known-good backup is safer than downloading an individual DLL.

Fix 3: Run Windows component repair on Windows 10 or 11
Use this step when the message names mswsock.dll, another protected Windows component, or several Windows programs are failing. It may not restore mswsosp.dll, because that historical file is not normally part of current Windows installations.
First install pending updates:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart if requested.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. Then run System File Checker:

sfc /scannow
Do not close the window until SFC reaches 100 percent.
Restart Windows and test the program again. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, run the commands once more after restarting. Do not interpret that message as permission to download mswsosp.dll from an unknown source. Microsoft’s repair guidance uses trusted files from the same Windows installation or version, not arbitrary Internet copies.

Fix 4: Use compatibility settings for an old 32-bit program
A Windows 9x application may fail because it expects an operating environment that Windows 10 or 11 no longer provides.
- Right-click the application’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try the oldest suitable Windows version listed.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the program’s installer or documentation requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the program again.
Compatibility mode cannot recreate every Windows 9x networking component. If the program still requires mswsosp.dll, use a preserved Windows 9x installation or a compatible virtual machine with the original application media.
A 32-bit Windows 9x DLL is not a safe substitute for a modern 64-bit networking component. Do not place it into System32 or `SysWOW64 simply because the names look appropriate.

Fix 5: Check optional Windows features only when the application needs them
Some legacy programs need an optional Windows compatibility feature, but enabling one will not normally install mswsosp.dll.
To check available features:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review features such as .NET Framework 3.5 only if the application’s documentation specifically requires them.
- Select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable random features as a substitute for repairing the application. A missing Winsock 9x DLL is not normally fixed by enabling .NET, legacy media components or a modern runtime.

Fix 6: Check network drivers only for a broader networking failure
A network driver can cause connectivity problems, but it does not normally supply mswsosp.dll. Check drivers only if the program also reports network failures or Windows shows an adapter problem.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

Do not use this command as a general DLL repair:
regsvr32 mswsosp.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Winsock service providers are loaded through the Winsock interface by Ws2_32.dll; they are not repaired by ordinary COM registration.
Running the command may produce an error stating that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not prove the file is corrupt, and repeating the command will not reinstall Winsock.
The historical Windows 95 fix
On genuine Windows 95, the appropriate repair was the Microsoft Windows Sockets 2 update, historically distributed as W95ws2setup.exe. It was designed for Windows 95 and its specified OSR releases and installed the updated TCP/IP stack, utilities and Winsock 2 components.
If you are maintaining a real Windows 95 system:
- Confirm the operating system version.
- Obtain the historical package from a trusted archive preserving Microsoft’s original documentation.
- Verify the installer before running it.
- Run the installer inside Windows 95.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Test the affected application.
The historical installer should not be treated as a modern Windows 10 or Windows 11 package. Microsoft also documented a later installer revision and a check involving Vnbt.386; those details apply to the historical Windows 95 environment, not to current Windows versions.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Downloading mswsosp.dll from a generic DLL site can introduce:
- Malware or a tampered binary
- The wrong Windows-era version
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Incompatible dependencies
- A file that does not match the application’s expected build
- A replacement that hides the real installation problem
Use the affected program’s official installer, original installation media, a verified system image, or the appropriate Microsoft repair process. Microsoft does not currently provide a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 redistributable specifically for mswsosp.dll.

Frequently asked questions
Is mswsosp.dll a virus?
The filename itself is legitimate and historically associated with Microsoft Winsock 2. Location and provenance still matter. A copy in a temporary or user-writable folder, or one installed by an unrelated modern executable, deserves malware investigation.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Do not copy an unverified DLL into System32, SysWOW64 or an application folder. Identify the requesting executable and repair its original installation first.
Is mswsosp.dll the same as mswsock.dll?
No. The names are similar, but they are different files. mswsock.dll is a current Windows Winsock provider; mswsosp.dll is primarily a Windows 9x-era filename.
Will Visual C++, DirectX or .NET fix it?
Not normally. Those packages do not provide a known current repair for this historical Winsock file. Install a runtime only when the error names that runtime or the application’s official requirements call for it.
Can SFC restore mswsosp.dll?
Only if the exact installed Windows version contains the file as a protected system file. Do not assume SFC will restore it on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
What information is needed for further diagnosis?
Record the full error text, Windows version, executable name, full file path, whether the file was quarantined, and whether the error occurs with one program or during every startup. Those details distinguish an application repair from a Windows, compatibility or security problem.
