1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“ The program can’t start because nvpmapi.core.win64.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see that nvpmapi.core.win64.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows.
The 60-second answer
nvpmapi.core.win64.dll is normally an application-local NVIDIA DLL, not a Windows system component. It is commonly associated with NVIDIA performance-monitoring software and is also included in some PC game installations, notably Grand Theft Auto V.
The safest fix is to repair the game or application named in the error. If the path points to a GTA V folder, verify GTA V through its launcher. If it points to an NVIDIA tool directory, repair or reinstall that NVIDIA component. Do not download an isolated DLL and copy it into C:WindowsSystem32.
The correct copy usually belongs beside the executable that loads it. Windows may report the DLL as NvPmApi.Core.win64.dll; filename capitalization does not matter because Windows treats filenames as case-insensitive.

What this file is and where it belongs
The NvPmApi name refers to NVIDIA’s Performance Monitor API, historically used by NVIDIA developer and performance tools to collect GPU performance counters. Public file metadata identifies the product as Nsight, with the internal name NvPmApiCore.100. Reported catalog details describe a 64-bit file associated with NVIDIA Corporation, but those catalog values are not a universal guarantee for every release.
Some games package the file locally. Grand Theft Auto V for PC is a prominent example. In a GTA V installation, the DLL may appear beside files such as GTA5.exe, GTAVLauncher.exe, and other game components.
That means the file is not automatically a driver file that belongs in a Windows directory. It can be delivered as part of the application that needs it. There is no reliable reason to place it manually in either of these locations:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
The win64 part indicates a 64-bit build. Do not substitute a 32-bit DLL, install both architectures “just in case,” or use a file taken from a different NVIDIA product.

First identify the program that failed
Before repairing anything, find the executable that requested the DLL.
Check these locations:
- Read the complete path in the error dialog, if one is shown.
- Open the game or application shortcut’s properties and inspect Target.
- Check the launcher’s installation folder.
- Open Event Viewer by pressing
Win + R, enteringeventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. - Expand Windows Logs → Application and inspect errors recorded at the time of the failed launch.
If the path contains a GTA V directory, repair GTA V first. If it points to an NVIDIA developer-tool directory, repair that tool. If another application owns the folder, use that application’s installer or repair function instead.
A DLL in an unrelated directory should not be replaced blindly. The same filename can be requested by different applications that require different builds or supporting files.
What each error message means
“The program cannot start because nvpmapi.core.win64.dll is missing”
The file is absent from the application directory or from a location where the application expects to find it. It may have been deleted, quarantined, damaged, or omitted during an incomplete installation.
Rank #2
The usual solution is to verify or reinstall the owning application.
“The specified module could not be found”
This message does not always mean the named DLL itself is missing. Windows may have found nvpmapi.core.win64.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies.
A missing runtime component, incompatible supporting DLL, damaged installation, or incorrect architecture can produce the same message. Repairing the owning application is still the best first step because its installer restores the complete matching set.
“The DLL is not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”
This usually indicates a corrupt file, an incompatible build, or a mismatched DLL. It does not normally mean that you should register the file with regsvr32.
Replace it with the copy supplied by the exact application. Do not keep trying random versions until one launches.
“The entry point could not be located”
The application loaded a DLL, but the DLL does not provide the function the application expects. This is a version mismatch, often caused by copying a file from another installation or mixing old and new game files.
Restore a clean application directory and verify the installation.
Fix 1: Verify GTA V through its launcher
If the error names GTA V or points into its installation folder, use the launcher’s file-repair feature.
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click GTAV.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game again.
Steam can replace missing or damaged files. It may report that some files were reacquired, or it may find no problems.
Rockstar Games Launcher
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher and sign in.
- Select Settings.
- Select the installed GTA V entry.
- Choose Verify Integrity.
- Wait for verification to complete.
- Start GTA V from the launcher.
Epic Games
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find GTA V and select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the launcher to repair the installation.
If verification repeatedly fails, uninstall and reinstall the game from the same official launcher. A clean reinstall is especially important if the directory has been modified by graphics mods, script loaders, replacement DLLs, or a partial migration between Steam, Epic, Rockstar, and FiveM installations.
Do not copy a DLL from a different GTA V folder. FiveM and the base game can use separate directories, and mixing files between them can create version and dependency errors.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a game file after an update or a changed detection rule.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries created when the application stopped launching.
- Expand the relevant detection and inspect its path and action.
- Restore the file only if the original application installation is trusted and you have confirmed the detection is a false positive.
- Run the game or application’s file verification afterward.
Do not allow an unknown DLL merely because an application requests it. If the file disappears again immediately after restoration, run a full scan, then repair the application so the launcher downloads a fresh publisher-supplied copy. A repeated deletion can indicate an active security detection, a damaged disk, or a modified installation.
Fix 3: Repair the NVIDIA component that installed it
Use this path only when the error points to an NVIDIA developer tool, performance utility, or another NVIDIA-installed application. A routine NVIDIA driver update is not automatically the right fix for a DLL that belongs to a game.
First identify the affected package in Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Look for the NVIDIA tool or application named by the path. Use its Modify, Repair, or Uninstall option if available. If no repair option exists, uninstall that specific component and reinstall it from NVIDIA’s official installer.
For a graphics-driver installation:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the NVIDIA adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider and version.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, try Roll Back Driver when that button is available.
- Otherwise, download the driver matching the GPU and Windows architecture from NVIDIA.
- Run the installer and choose the clean-install option if offered.
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking which device drivers are stale and matching each package to the hardware; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation requires the full version. It is optional, and when this DLL belongs to a specific game, repairing or reinstalling that game remains the definitive fix.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components
Windows repair commands are appropriate when multiple applications show damaged-system symptoms, Windows components fail, or the problem began after broader system corruption. They normally will not recreate an application-local NVIDIA DLL.
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If either command reports that it could not complete, restart Windows and repeat the process once. If only this one game or application is affected, return to that application’s verification or reinstall process rather than repeatedly running system repair.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of hunting through repeated SFC and DISM results easier by showing detected issues; its free scan identifies problems, while repair requires the full version. It is not required, and it cannot replace verification of the specific game or application that should supply this DLL.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, and regsvr32 usually do not help
Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX runtimes, and .NET repairs can fix other application errors, but there is no specific evidence that they restore nvpmapi.core.win64.dll.
regsvr32 is also generally inappropriate. It is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Runtime and game libraries normally load directly and do not need COM registration. Running regsvr32 against this file can produce another error without repairing the missing dependency.
Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor explicitly documents that its DLL is a self-registering component and supplies the correct registration command.
If the restored file disappears again
If verification restores the DLL but it vanishes on the next launch:

- Check the drive for errors and confirm that the disk has available space.
- Avoid adding a permanent antivirus exclusion until the file and its source are trusted.
If the file is restored but the error changes to an entry-point or bad-image message, you likely have mixed versions. Remove modified files, restore a clean directory, and verify again.
When System Restore is appropriate
Use System Restore as a fallback if the issue started after a recent driver or software change and normal application repair did not help.

Safe troubleshooting checklist
Before asking for further help, record:
- The complete error text.
- The executable path shown in the dialog or Event Viewer.
- The application or game launcher.
- The folder where
nvpmapi.core.win64.dllis expected. - Whether the file was quarantined.
- Whether the installation contains mods or replacement DLLs.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The installed NVIDIA driver version.
- What happened during file verification.
Avoid DLL download websites. An isolated download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, or no required dependencies. The safe source is the official installer for the game, NVIDIA application, or driver that owns the file. For Windows components, use Windows Update and Microsoft’s built-in repair tools.

Is nvpmapi.core.win64.dll a Windows file?
Generally no. It is an NVIDIA-related application DLL and is not a normal Windows component.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Restore it to the directory supplied by the owning application. Copying it into a system folder can create a second, mismatched copy and hide the real installation problem.
Is GTA V responsible for every report?
No. GTA V is a prominent source because some PC distributions include the file, but other NVIDIA-related applications can request it.
Do I need a 32-bit version?
The filename identifies a 64-bit variant. Use the architecture supplied by the exact application. Do not install a 32-bit substitute.
Can I fix it by updating my NVIDIA driver?
Only when the failing path belongs to the NVIDIA driver or tool installation. If the path is inside a GTA V directory, verify or reinstall GTA V instead.
What if the error says a dependent module is missing?
Repair the owning application first. The named DLL may be present while another library it needs is absent or incompatible.
When should I use SFC and DISM?
Use them when Windows itself shows broader corruption. They are not a substitute for restoring a missing third-party game or application file.
