Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows, note:
- Which program fails: Is it an older database application such as Multisim, or do several programs show the error?
- When it fails: Does the message appear during startup, after an application update, after antivirus activity, or after Windows changes?
- The exact wording: “mswstr10.dll was not found” usually means the loader could not locate the file or a required component. A procedure-entry-point or “not designed to run on Windows” message points more toward a mismatched or corrupted Jet component.
- Application architecture:
mswstr10.dllis a 32-bit x86 Microsoft Jet file. A 32-bit application can need it even when Windows itself is 64-bit. - Scope of the problem: One failing application usually indicates an application installation problem. Several affected applications make Windows component corruption or a missing update more likely.

Do not begin by downloading mswstr10.dll from a random DLL repository. The file belongs to a coordinated Microsoft Jet component set, and a loose replacement can have the wrong version, architecture, or integrity.
What is mswstr10.dll?
mswstr10.dll is the Microsoft Jet Sort Library, an x86 component of Microsoft Jet produced by Microsoft Corporation. Jet is the older Microsoft database engine used by legacy applications and database files.

- 4. HELP KEEP OLDER PCS USEFUL Refresh, reinstall or maintain a compatible older computer before deciding whether replacement is necessary. Suitable for home computers, office workstations, PC enthusiasts and technicians who regularly work with supported systems.
- 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
That does not mean every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer should contain the same version. The correct file depends on the operating system, installed updates, and the application that loads it.
Microsoft’s security-update file tables also identify Mswstr10.dll as an x86 component in updates distributed for both x86 and x64 Windows. In practical terms, 64-bit Windows can still need this 32-bit Jet library for a 32-bit legacy program.
What the missing-file message means
When Windows starts an application, its loader resolves the executable’s dependent DLLs. If the loader cannot find mswstr10.dll, cannot load a compatible copy, or encounters a damaged dependency, the application may stop before its own interface appears.
The exact error can vary:
- “This application has failed to start because mswstr10.dll was not found” generally indicates that the named file is missing from a location Windows searched.
- “The procedure entry point could not be located” more strongly suggests that Jet files come from incompatible versions.
- “The application was unable to start correctly” is a general loader failure and may involve another dependency.
- “Not designed to run on Windows” can indicate corruption, an invalid architecture, or a damaged dependent DLL rather than simple absence.
An older National Instruments Multisim installation is a documented example of an application reporting that mswstr10.dll was not found while also having trouble opening its Master, Corporate, and User databases. Multisim is one known trigger, not the only possible one.
Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error
If only one program fails, start here. An application-specific repair is safer than replacing a Windows DLL manually because the installer can restore the compatible Jet files and related database components together.
Windows 11
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Some desktop programs do not expose Repair in Installed apps. In that case:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Look for Repair, Change, or Modify.
- Follow the installer’s repair steps.
- Restart Windows before testing the program again.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Choose the affected program.
- Select Advanced options, when shown.
- Select Repair.
For programs without that option, open Control Panel, choose Programs, select Programs and Features, select the application, and choose Repair or Change.
If the application came from original vendor media, use that installer’s repair function. For a legacy Multisim installation, use the original National Instruments installation media or the vendor’s official support process rather than copying Jet files from another machine.
If repair does not work
Uninstalling and reinstalling the affected application is the next application-level step:
- Back up the application’s project files and databases.
- Record any license or configuration information you need.
- Uninstall the program from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as an administrator.
- Restart again.
- Test the application before restoring optional add-ons or custom components.
If the error began immediately after an application update, use the installer’s rollback or repair option where available. An update may have left the program and its Jet dependencies at different versions.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates and restart
If more than one program reports Jet-related failures, or the file appears to be a Windows component, install pending updates before running repair commands.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart when asked.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Test the affected application.
Do not assume that a Windows 10 or Windows 11 update will install the same Jet version found on an older computer. Modern Windows releases and legacy applications do not always use the same database architecture.
A Windows update may also require a restart before a locked system DLL can be replaced. If an installer reports that mswstr10.dll is in use, close all applications, restart Windows, and run the repair or update again.
Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use Microsoft’s component-repair sequence when Windows files may be missing or corrupted. Run DISM first, then System File Checker.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source, so keep the computer connected to the internet. Do not close the window simply because progress appears to pause.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Run SFC
After DISM completes, use the same elevated Command Prompt and enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows after the scan, then test the application.
Interpret the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC did not find damaged protected system files. The failing application, Jet version, or another dependency may still be the cause.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means Windows repaired files. Restart and test again.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means repair remains incomplete. Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the issue persists, use Microsoft’s source-based repair guidance with a matching Windows installation source rather than copying a DLL from another computer.
Running these commands repeatedly without checking the result can make troubleshooting harder. Record the final message and focus next on the application installer if Windows reports no integrity problem.
If manually comparing component versions and repeating DISM/SFC is becoming difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; its repair actions require the full version, and it is not required when the affected application needs a vendor reinstall.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and security history
Security software can quarantine a file after an update or after a detection. Treat a quarantined DLL cautiously.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries around the time the error began.
- Check the detected file path and publisher information.
- Do not restore the file if its origin is unclear.
- Run a full scan.
If the file is clearly part of the Windows installation, appears digitally signed by Microsoft, and the detection is confirmed as a false positive by your security vendor, restoration may be available through the security product’s quarantine screen. Afterward, run DISM and SFC and test the application.
When there is any doubt, use Windows repair or the affected application’s installer instead of restoring a loose copy. A file named mswstr10.dll is not trustworthy merely because its filename is correct.
Fix 5: Confirm the 32-bit architecture
mswstr10.dll is a 32-bit x86 component. This matters when the failing application is old.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64 and still require 32-bit Jet libraries. Installing a 64-bit database engine does not automatically satisfy that dependency.
Also, do not interpret the name System32 as proof that every file in it is 64-bit. Windows uses historical directory names and redirection rules for 32-bit processes. The relevant questions are:
- Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Is the Jet component compatible with that application?
- Were the Jet files installed as a matching set?
- Is Windows reporting corruption or a missing component?
Avoid replacing a 32-bit Jet file with a file taken from a 64-bit package or another computer. Even two x86 files may be incompatible if their Jet builds do not match the other components.
Fix 6: Check for a mismatched Jet installation
A missing-file error can be caused by more than a physically absent file. If the application reports a procedure-entry-point error, crashes while opening a database, or began failing after a partial update, the Jet components may be from different builds.

Look for these signs:
- The failure began after an interrupted installation.
- The program opens only some database files.
- The error names a procedure rather than saying the file is missing.
- Repairing the application changes the message but does not resolve it.
- SFC reports no Windows integrity violations.
The correct response is to repair or reinstall the application and its database components as a group. Do not copy only mswstr10.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder. That can replace one symptom while leaving msjet40.dll, msjter40.dll, or another dependency incompatible.
Fix 7: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
Do not run:
regsvr32 mswstr10.dll
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft identifies %systemroot%System32Mswstr10.dll as not registerable.
A registration error does not repair a missing or damaged Jet library. It only adds another error to the diagnosis. If you already ran regsvr32 and saw a message that the entry point was missing, undoing the command is unnecessary because the command did not register the file.
Fix 8: Do not install unrelated runtimes
mswstr10.dll is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. Installing those packages is unlikely to repair this specific Jet dependency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSimilarly, the Windows Optional features or Windows Features dialog is not a general DLL repair tool. You do not need to enable random .NET, legacy media, or database features merely because an application names mswstr10.dll.
Use Windows Features only when the application’s own documentation specifically requires a feature and the error points to that feature. Otherwise, repair the application, update Windows, and run DISM followed by SFC.
Fix 9: Use legacy Jet packages only on matching legacy systems
Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 was distributed historically through Microsoft’s legacy update channels, including KB829558. Later Jet security updates superseded that service pack.
That does not make Jet 4.0 SP8 a universal fix for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Do not install an old Windows XP package blindly on a newer operating system. First identify:
- The Windows release
- The failing application’s supported operating systems
- Whether the program is 32-bit
- Which Jet version the original installer expects
If the application is old enough to require a legacy Jet package, obtain that package through Microsoft’s official archived update or the application vendor’s original installation media. Modern Access versions use the newer ACE database engine rather than relying on Jet 4.0 in the same way.
Fix 10: Do not use Device Manager for this DLL
Device Manager repairs hardware drivers. It does not restore mswstr10.dll, which is a Microsoft Jet database component.
Use Device Manager only if the same incident also includes a separate hardware problem, such as an unknown device, a missing storage controller, or a device with a warning icon:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver or Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows if you uninstall a device.
- Install the driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer when Windows does not locate a suitable driver.
If your troubleshooting also reveals several stale or mismatched hardware drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver versions; its full-version installation is optional, and updating a driver will not replace a missing Microsoft Jet DLL.

When to use System Restore or Windows repair
Use System Restore when the failure began after a recent system change and a restore point exists from before the problem.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point, if available.
- Pick a point dated before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
Back up important files first. System Restore changes system files, drivers, and installed applications, but it does not substitute for backing up personal data.
If System Restore is unavailable or does not help, consider an in-place Windows repair using matching installation media. This is appropriate when DISM and SFC cannot repair broader component corruption. Back up important data and confirm the correct Windows edition before proceeding.
A complete Windows reinstall should be the last resort, after application repair, Windows repair, System Restore, and vendor support have been exhausted.

Should you download mswstr10.dll separately?
No. Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- The file may contain malware or have been modified.
- The version may not match the rest of Jet.
- The file may be the wrong architecture.
- Copying it may overwrite a protected Windows component.
- The application may still fail because another Jet dependency is damaged.
- A loose DLL does not repair the installer, registry state, servicing store, or application configuration.
The safer sources are:
- Windows Update
- DISM and SFC
- The affected application’s original installer
- Microsoft’s matching legacy Jet update, when the operating system and application genuinely require it
- The application vendor’s official support channel
FAQ
Is mswstr10.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. It is identified as the Microsoft Jet Sort Library, produced by Microsoft Corporation for Microsoft Jet. A legitimate file should still be verified by its location, signature, and installation context rather than trusted solely by filename.
Is mswstr10.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
It is a 32-bit x86 Jet component. A 64-bit version of the DLL is not the expected replacement. A 32-bit legacy application can need it on 64-bit Windows.
Is it part of Office or Access?
It belongs to Microsoft Jet, an older database engine used by some applications and database workflows. It should not be described as the same engine as modern Access Database Engine, also known as ACE.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Normally, no. Those are separate runtime families. Repair Microsoft Jet through Windows servicing or repair the application that installed the dependency.
Why does Multisim sometimes report this error?
An older Multisim installation can use Jet-related database components. A documented Multisim report included the exact “mswstr10.dll was not found” message and database-access failures. That confirms one real application-specific case, not an exclusive association.
What if SFC says everything is fine?
Repair the affected application, especially if only one program fails. SFC can confirm that protected Windows files are intact while an application’s private files or Jet version remain wrong.
What if the error returns after reinstalling the application?
Check whether antivirus quarantined the file, whether the installation was interrupted, and whether the application is supported on the current Windows release. A procedure-entry-point error after reinstall often indicates mismatched Jet components rather than simple absence.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. Matching the filename is not enough. The other computer may have a different Jet build, operating system, architecture, or security state.
When should I contact the vendor?
Contact the application vendor when the failure is limited to one program, the original installer cannot repair it, or the program is a legacy release with unclear Windows compatibility. Provide the exact error text, Windows version, application version if known, and the results of the repair steps.
