Black is a strong color in Magic: The Gathering—Avatar: The Last Airbender Limited, especially when its removal and threats fit a supported two-color plan. But the available Premier Draft pair data does not show black as the best color overall: blue-black performs well, while black-red is the lowest-ranked pair in the cited results. In draft, follow the cards and seat; in sealed, build around the strongest cards in your pool.
What black offers in Avatar Limited
Black’s clearest strength is removal. LimitedMTG’s November 2025 card analysis counted 12 black removal spells in the set, second to white’s 15, including four black removal spells at common. The analysis counted 52 removal spells across the set’s 281 cards, 19 at common. These are card-list counts, not evidence that a color wins more matches.
Removal matters because it can answer threats that would otherwise dominate a game. Wizards’ official Avatar prerelease guide names Heartless Act as an example of a spell an opponent may represent by keeping two black mana available. Still, removal is only one part of a playable deck: black needs creatures or other threats, a workable curve, and a plan for winning.
LimitedMTG’s same analysis reports that 33% of creatures have toughness four or more and that three damage kills 67% of creatures, matching the cited recent-set average. Its author characterizes the format as unusually influenced by rares and suggests two broad approaches: apply pressure with cheap commons and evasive threats, or preserve removal for rare threats and win with a strong threat of your own. Those are the publisher’s format observations, not official Wizards statistics or a guarantee about any individual game.

How black’s draft pairings compare
A Second Main Phase summary of 17Lands data reports results from 562,924 Premier Draft games. Its listed pair win rates show black working across several strategies, but not performing equally with each partner.
| Color pair | Listed win rate | Theme identified in the cited guide |
|---|---|---|
| Blue-black | 56.6% | Draw-two control |
| Black-green | 56.1% | Counters |
| White-black | 55.9% | Sacrifice |
| Black-red | 54.0% | Firebending aggro |
For context, green-white and red-white each posted 57.3% in the same summary, and white-blue posted 57.1%. Black-red was the lowest of the ten listed pairs. The spread between the highest and lowest pairs was 3.3 percentage points, and all ten had win rates above 50% in that sample.

- Contents: 7 Commons (In 1 out of every 26 Play Boosters, a common is replaced with a TLE card.) 3 Uncommons 1 Wildcard of any rarity 1 Rare or mythic rare 1 Traditional foil card of any rarity 1 Land card 1 Non-foil DFC helper card or double-sided token
These figures describe pair results in the reported sample; they do not isolate the strength of black itself. The source is a secondary summary crediting 17Lands, and its page excerpt does not establish all data filters or a precise date range. Use the numbers as context, not as a pick order or proof that one color is inherently stronger.
Blue-black: draw-two control
Blue-black has the strongest listed result among the black pairs here, at 56.6%. Its draw-two theme rewards a deck whose cards support that plan. The label is a guide to the archetype, not a reason to take every blue or black card: assess whether the actual picks provide enough interaction, card flow, and threats to finish games.

Black-green: counters
Black-green posted 56.1% in the cited results. Its counters theme asks whether the drafted cards work together; a collection of individually strong cards may be less effective than a deck that can develop and use its synergy while maintaining a sensible curve.
White-black: sacrifice
White-black recorded 55.9% and is identified as a sacrifice strategy. Prioritize cards that contribute to that plan rather than assuming black removal alone makes the pairing work.

Black-red: Fire Nation aggro
Wizards describes black-red as Fire Nation aggro: deploy creatures and create tokens with firebending, then spend the resulting red mana on spells such as Combustion Technique, Lightning Strike, and Fire Nation Attacks. The cited pair data puts it at 54.0%, so do not assume black-red is automatically black’s strongest home just because its theme is aggressive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether to draft black
Do not force black because of its removal count or this guide’s title. Judge each pick against the cards and plan your seat is actually offering. A strong black card can be the right pick, but a card that does not fit your curve or developing pair may leave the deck less coherent.

- Assess the card in the pack. Compare its practical contribution—removal, a credible threat, or support for a synergy—with the alternatives, rather than choosing by color reputation alone.
- Track your curve and needs. Notice whether you have early plays, enough creatures, and a way to close. A later removal spell may not solve a deck short on threats or tempo.
- Look for a supported pair plan. Check whether black cards work with the second color’s strategy, such as draw-two, counters, sacrifice, or Fire Nation aggro. Wizards’ guide presents the two-color archetypes as shared strategies and recommends using archetype-specific cards when the deck supports them.
- Read the seat signals. Black is more attractive when useful black cards continue to arrive and the other color has a plausible plan. Pair win rates are not a substitute for judging what is open in your draft.
How to build black into a sealed deck
Sealed is a pool-building decision, not a draft-seat decision: you must evaluate the cards you opened rather than wait for a color to be passed. Wizards advises players to identify their best threats and removal, select their strongest two colors, and build a curve. Its guide says most spells should cost three mana or less while the deck still needs ways to close, including higher-cost finishers where appropriate.
- Find your credible threats. Identify the creatures or other cards that can turn an advantage into a win. Do not treat a stack of removal as a complete plan.
- Count playable interaction. Note black’s removal, but compare it with the pool’s removal in other colors and consider whether the spells can answer the threats you are likely to face.
- Check early plays and curve. Look for enough useful plays at lower costs, then assess whether the deck can use its mana through the game and finish it.
- Compare the strongest two-color builds. Choose the colors that provide the best overall mix of threats, removal, curve, and synergy. Wizards’ guidance is to select the strongest two colors from the opened pool; a seeded color does not oblige you to play it.
- Consider a splash only if the mana supports it. A powerful off-color card is not automatically worth weakening the deck’s ability to cast its spells on time.
Wizards’ prerelease guide says the prerelease pack includes five Play Boosters plus a seeded Character Booster. The seeded color can help frame the pool, but the deck decision should still come from the cards that make the strongest playable build.
Practical verdict
Black deserves to be considered: it has substantial removal depth and viable pairings, with blue-black ahead of black-red in the cited Premier Draft summary. But those data do not establish black as the best color, and pair performance cannot measure a color in isolation. Draft black when the cards, curve, signals, and partner color support it; in sealed, play it when your opened pool makes it part of your strongest build.
