Starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, which Wizards of the Coast identifies as the first Magic set of 2027, Magic booster products are scheduled for a major update: rare God Packs, a new name for Play Boosters, and changes to foil contents. The God Pack odds and contents differ between Booster Packs and Collector Boosters, and neither product guarantees one.
What is changing, and when?
Wizards announced the changes on October 5, 2026. They are scheduled to begin with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm and continue with Magic Multiverse sets. Wizards says Universes Beyond sets are expected to get God Packs in 2028; it has not provided a more specific schedule for individual sets. These are planned changes, not a feature of every Magic pack currently on sale.
Play Boosters will be renamed Booster Packs. Wizards describes this as a name change, not a new product: “Play Boosters are now just called Booster Packs.” The publisher says the changes do not come with a price adjustment, though that does not establish regional retail prices or the future price of a particular product. Wizards’ October 5, 2026 announcement outlines the update.
What are the God Pack odds and contents?
Wizards’ announced rates are one God Pack in every 1,000 Booster Packs and one in every 300 Collector Boosters. These are publisher-stated rates, not independently measured opening results or a promise that any given purchase will contain one. A God Pack is a random configuration within a regular product, not a separately orderable pack.

How are regular Booster Pack and Collector Booster contents changing?
Booster Packs
The former Play Booster’s wildcard slot is planned to include Japan Showcase cards in traditional foil. Wizards also says foil rare and mythic rare drop rates will rise. However, Booster Packs will no longer include foil commons or uncommons, and a foil will no longer be guaranteed in every pack. Any foil in the changed Booster Pack will be a rare or mythic rare.

Collector Boosters
Collector Boosters will lose two foil commons and one foil uncommon, with no replacement for those three cards. This does not mean foil commons and uncommons disappear from the product entirely: WPN says some will remain.
What should you do if you open a God Pack at a Limited event?
Stop and call a judge or tournament organizer. WPN says the right handling depends on the event’s format and competitive expectations:

- BEST BOOSTERS FOR PLAYING WITH FRIENDS—Play Boosters are the best way to discover what Magic has to offer; they're perfect for building decks, playing Limited games with friends, and are tons of fun to open
- Competitive events: WPN strongly recommends removing the God Pack from play, letting the player who opened it keep it, and giving them an unopened pack from the same set at no charge so they can continue. At competitive events where Wizards provides the product, such as Regional Championships and the Pro Tour, WPN says the God Pack must be removed and replaced.
- Casual events: The store may choose to leave the God Pack in the draft or sealed pool. WPN recommends removal and replacement in most cases.
WPN’s instruction is: “If a player opens a God Pack, they should stop and call for a judge or tournament organizer.”

The odds describe a rare possibility, not a buying strategy: purchasing a particular number of packs does not guarantee a God Pack. If you are shopping for the updated contents, check that a listing is for a product from the relevant set and release period; the announced changes are prospective, and individual products may not reflect them until the rollout begins. The announcement concerns Magic booster products, not a separately sold God Pack.
