My Friendly Neighborhood is a single-player, first-person survival horror adventure built around exploration, puzzles, combat and inventory management—with a colorful puppet-show setting and comic touches instead of a realistic, gore-focused presentation. It may suit you if you enjoy working through a strange environment and managing scarce resources; it is a less obvious fit if you want multiplayer, or if you prefer horror that is grounded and graphic. Steam offers a demo, so you can try the tone and mechanics before deciding.
What kind of game is My Friendly Neighborhood?
Developed by John Szymanski and Evan Szymanski and published by DreadXP, the game was released on July 18, 2023. You play Gordon, a repairman sent to investigate the return of a once-popular puppet television show. Its familiar children’s-TV imagery becomes a hostile place, where puppets must be fended off and puzzles solved. DreadXP’s press kit and the Steam listing describe it as a single-player survival horror adventure.

The first-person game combines non-linear exploration with puzzle solving, combat and resource management. You can use a map to navigate its environments, while a real-time, grid-based inventory makes what you carry part of the challenge. One distinctive weapon is the Rolodexer, which fires letters as ammunition. Steam also lists a post-game Neighborhorde mode, in addition to the main adventure.
Is it scary, and what is its horror like?
The horror comes from the contrast between a brightly colored puppet-show world and the threat posed by its characters. DreadXP describes the game as mixing horror and comedy, and says it does not rely on dismemberment or decapitation. It also warns that defeated puppets do not necessarily stay down. That is the publisher’s description of the presentation—not an age rating or a guarantee that the game will feel mild to every player.

If you like unsettling settings with a playful edge, that combination may be a draw. If you are looking for realistic, graphic horror, or want to avoid enemies that can return after being defeated, the official Steam demo is a useful way to judge the atmosphere for yourself.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
A likely fit
- You enjoy first-person exploration and finding your way through interconnected or non-linear spaces.
- You want puzzles alongside combat, rather than a game focused only on fighting.
- You like survival-horror decisions about resources and what to carry.
- You are interested in horror with colorful puppet characters and comic touches.
Look elsewhere if
- You want multiplayer: Steam lists the game as single-player.
- You primarily want realistic, gore-focused horror; the publisher emphasizes a different tone.
- You prefer a straightforward action game without puzzle solving or inventory management.
These are fit judgments based on the documented features and tone, not on an audience study. If you are unsure, try the demo rather than relying on the premise alone.

Platforms, demo and PC requirements
Steam lists a downloadable demo for Windows PC. Its published minimum and recommended requirements are:

These are the requirements published on the Steam product page, not a guarantee of performance on every PC. Steam also notes that the Steam client itself has required Windows 10 or later since January 2024; that client requirement is separate from the game’s listed minimum operating system.

A developer announcement dated July 17, 2025 said console versions were launching for Xbox consoles and PlayStation 5 and mentioned Xbox Game Pass. It also said other platform targets might follow, which does not establish current availability on every platform or in every region. Check the relevant local storefront for the current edition, price and availability. Steam announced the game as Steam Deck Verified on July 28, 2023. The developer’s dated announcements are in the official Steam Community archive.
Languages and player reception
Steam lists interface text in 13 languages: English, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Latin American Spanish, Traditional Chinese and Turkish. English is the only language listed with full audio; the other listed languages have subtitles. Store language details can change, so check the live listing if support for a particular language matters to you.

When the Steam listing was accessed on October 7, 2026, it showed 96% positive from 2,151 English-language user reviews and a Metacritic score of 82. These are dated store-page figures, not a fixed assessment: Steam’s user-review aggregate can change, and it should not be read as a critic consensus.

My Friendly Neighborhood is worth considering if you want a solo, first-person horror adventure where navigation, puzzles and resource choices matter as much as combat, and if a puppet-show setting with comedy sounds appealing. Its single-player format and unusual horror tone make the Steam demo the best low-commitment way to see whether it fits your taste. For a console purchase, verify availability and details in your region’s current storefront.
