My New Favourite Pro Xbox Controller Isn’t Made by Microsoft

The PDP Victrix Pro BFG adapts from a standard controller to a six-button fightpad, with rear buttons and adjustable hair triggers. Its sensitivity and module swaps deserve consideration.

The PDP Victrix Pro BFG Wireless Controller is a compelling Xbox alternative for players who want one pad to adapt to different genres. Its interchangeable modules can switch the right-side controls to a six-button fightpad, while rear paddles and adjustable hair triggers suit shooter play. The flexibility comes with a learning curve: the shallowest trigger setting is very sensitive, and some module swaps take more effort than others.

What makes the Victrix Pro BFG different?

Unlike a conventional pro controller with a fixed layout, the Victrix Pro BFG lets you change parts of its control arrangement. PDP lists the Xbox model as compatible with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC, with official Xbox licensing. It connects wirelessly through a USB dongle, supports Bluetooth, and can also be used over wired USB-C. The box includes modular pieces and a 3m braided cable. PDP’s product listing has the manufacturer’s compatibility and included-accessory details.

Switching between standard and fightpad layouts

The right-side module can be replaced with a six-button fightpad layout, and the left stick/D-pad module can be reversed to suit different preferences. Stuff’s Tom Morgan-Freelander found the fightpad especially useful for fighting games built around three punches and three kicks. The same controller can then be returned to a more familiar arrangement for other genres. Stuff’s review, published 22 March 2024, describes the controller as a flexible option for Xbox and PC players who move between game types; that is the reviewer’s assessment, not a universal ranking. Read Stuff’s full review.

Controls for shooters

Four mappable back buttons let you move selected inputs off the face buttons or sticks, and the hair triggers have adjustable travel. That can help tailor the controls for shooters, but Morgan-Freelander found the triggers very sensitive at their shallowest setting. Accidental inputs may be a nuisance until the travel and deadzones are adjusted to suit your preference.

What are the trade-offs?

  • Trigger sensitivity: The shortest trigger setting can register inputs very readily. Adjusting the deadzone helped Stuff’s reviewer, but the initial sensitivity may not suit everyone.
  • Face-button feel: Stuff notes that the standard face buttons do not use microswitches, a potential drawback for buyers who prefer the crisp click of that design.
  • Module changes: The layout is customizable, but Stuff found that some component swaps are harder than others. It is worth treating the modules as a way to set up the controller for a game or genre, rather than assuming every change is equally quick.

Stuff rated the controller five stars and summed up its editorial verdict as “Customisable, sensibly priced and born for competition.” That is the publication’s judgment, not a measured claim about competitive performance. PDP’s own phrase, “built to win,” is marketing language rather than independent evidence.

Battery life and weight: review observations versus specifications

Battery figures should be read with their source and qualification attached. In the March 2024 review, Stuff’s Tom Morgan-Freelander reported seeing north of 19 hours of wireless battery life in his use. PDP lists a 2000mAh battery and claims “up to 20 hour life, depending on usage profile.” The first is a reviewer’s reported experience; the second is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed runtime.

Stuff also reported that the controller in its stock configuration was barely 5% heavier than an official Microsoft pad. PDP lists the controller’s weight as 298g. These figures are not interchangeable: one is the reviewer’s comparison with a Microsoft controller, while the other is PDP’s listed weight.

Can you add Hall Effect stick modules?

PDP lists a separate Pro BFG Hall Effect Module Pack as compatible with the Xbox version. It is an optional accessory, not part of the controller package. PDP says the sticks need recalibration after the pack is installed. Check that a listing is for the Xbox-compatible pack before buying. See PDP’s Hall Effect Module Pack listing.

Who should consider it?

The Pro BFG makes the most sense for Xbox or PC players who will use its layout changes—particularly players who alternate between fighting games and shooters—and are willing to tune the triggers and learn the module swaps. If you mainly want a familiar fixed layout, do not expect the modular features alone to make it a better fit than a conventional controller. Stuff’s review compares it with Microsoft’s Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, but the available evidence does not establish a current price comparison.
