No—not as a dependable repair. If a Nintendo game started after someone blew on the cartridge, the result did not prove that breath fixed it: the cartridge had also been removed and reinserted, which may have changed its connection. Nintendo’s own care guidance says not to blow on Game Pak connectors and warns against moisture and dirt.
Why did a game sometimes start after someone blew on it?
The familiar ritual combined two actions: blowing on the cartridge and putting it back in the console. If the game then booted, there was no way to tell from that sequence alone which action mattered. Reinserting the cartridge may have altered an intermittent connection; that is a plausible explanation, not a proven cause of every successful restart.
For an NES, the possible trouble spots include the cartridge contacts and the console’s 72-pin connector. Dust, corrosion, or connector wear can affect whether the system reads a game, so a fault may be in the console rather than the cartridge. A restart after reinsertion is not evidence that the underlying problem has been repaired. iFixit’s NES troubleshooting guide discusses these possible failure points.
What does Nintendo say about blowing on cartridges?
Nintendo’s Health & Safety Precautions for cartridge-based NES, Super NES, and Nintendo 64 consoles state: “Do not blow on them or allow them to get wet or dirty.” Nintendo also advises users not to touch the contacts, to check the edge connector for foreign material, and not to clean Game Paks with benzene, paint thinner, alcohol, or another solvent.

This is manufacturer care guidance, not a measurement of how often the blowing ritual appeared to work or how much damage it caused. No effectiveness or damage rate is established by the cited sources.
How should you handle a cartridge that will not load?
- Keep fingers off the contacts and check the edge connector for foreign material, following Nintendo’s handling guidance.
- Do not blow on the connector, let it become wet, or use solvents such as alcohol, benzene, or paint thinner. Nintendo’s cited guidance does not give a detailed contact-cleaning procedure.
- If an NES game still fails, consider that the console’s 72-pin connector—not just the cartridge—may be involved. A cartridge cleaning product cannot be assumed to fix a worn console connector.
Repair procedures posted by users online are not equivalent to Nintendo guidance. For example, iFixit’s cartridge-cleaning guide describes opening cartridges, many of which use security screws, and includes its own cleaning steps. Opening a cartridge is an optional repair path, not a necessary response to a failed load; do not treat that guide as Nintendo-approved or universally safe.
