Myrient shut down on 31 March 2026, according to its official site. Its operator cited a growing gap between donations and operating costs, a monthly personal shortfall of more than $6,000, download managers bypassing protections, and higher hardware and hosting expenses. A community team later reported acquiring roughly 385 TB of the collection, but that does not establish that a complete public mirror is available.
Why did Myrient shut down?
Myrient’s operator said donations stayed roughly level while traffic increased, leaving the operator to cover more than $6,000 out of pocket each month. “In short, I can no longer afford to run the site,” the operator wrote in the closure announcement on Myrient’s official Telegram channel. The figure is the operator’s account of a monthly shortfall, not an audited expense report.

The announcement also cited specialized download managers that bypassed download protections and donation messages, including tools that put features behind a paywall. The operator said commercial, for-profit use of Myrient was prohibited.
Rising RAM, SSD and hard-drive prices, higher hosting expenses, and the need for storage and caching upgrades added pressure. The operator connected hardware demand to AI data centers, but the announcement does not quantify how much that factor contributed. The closure was attributed to several pressures, not storage prices alone.

What was in the archive?
Myrient described its organized collection as containing more than 390 terabytes of downloadable material before closure. That is the service’s own scale estimate, not a later inventory audit. Examples reported by TechSpot on 2 March 2026 included complete MAME ROM sets and Exo projects covering classic DOS and early Windows 3.x software.
Was the Myrient archive backed up?
MiNERVA’s Archive Team said in a 25 March 2026 community progress update that it had acquired approximately 385 TB. That is the team’s reported acquisition, distinct from Myrient’s “over 390 terabytes” description; the figures refer to separate stages and may use different accounting.

Acquisition does not by itself mean every file has been checked or is ready for public download. The team said it was comparing hashes with trusted DAT files, accepting community hash contributions, and using multiple hash types, including SHA-256. It noted that verifying files inside compressed archives takes more work than checking only the archive-level hashes. Those are the team’s descriptions of its process, not an independent audit.

MiNERVA’s FAQ describes a community effort to archive Myrient and distribute it through torrents, but neither that general description nor the earlier progress post establishes that the entire collection is publicly available now. A tracker page captured for this report showed three servers but “No collections yet”; that display alone cannot settle the archive’s current completeness or availability.

What is still operating?
At the time of its closure announcement, Myrient said its Discord server, Telegram channel, and hShop were not affected. Its site says donations received after 31 March 2026 went toward hShop’s monthly hosting costs. These were statements about the services at the time of the announcement, not confirmation of their status today.
Myrient’s official post said it stopped accepting new uploads on 26 February 2026, ahead of the shutdown. The service’s landing page gives 31 March 2026 as the closure date.
Can you download or redistribute the collection?
The cited pages do not give a general legal determination for every game, ROM, or software item in the archive. Ownership of a physical copy does not automatically establish that downloading or redistributing a separate archive copy is authorized in every jurisdiction. Check the applicable law and rights for the specific material; keep preservation to lawful personal backups and authorized sharing.
