Notebookcheck reported on March 15, 2026, that a community backup of Myrient’s 385 TB game archive was complete, citing a Reddit user’s claim. The available reporting does not independently verify the archive’s inventory or integrity, and it does not establish whether the planned torrents or replacement website became available. Myrient’s servers were reported to be scheduled to shut down on March 31, 2026.
What was reported about the backup?
Notebookcheck’s March 15, 2026 report said members of the gaming community had completed a backup of Myrient’s 385 TB archive. The article attributed the completion claim to Reddit user Ill-Economist-5285, rather than to an independently audited inventory or a confirmation from Myrient or the organizers. Notebookcheck’s report
That distinction matters: “backed up” is the report’s account of a community claim, not a verified finding that every file was copied and can be restored without errors. The reviewed reporting provides no full inventory, checksum set, or audit method.
What was in Myrient’s archive?
The report describes the archive as ROM files used in emulation and gives PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U as examples. Those examples indicate broad console coverage, but they are not a complete catalog; the report does not provide a full inventory of systems or titles.

Why was Myrient reportedly shutting down?
Notebookcheck said Myrient planned to shut down its servers on March 31, 2026, citing rising hosting and drive-storage costs. This is the explanation given in that report, not a directly verified statement from a Myrient announcement in the reviewed sources.
Can people access the backup now?
The March report said the backup group was generating torrents and expected to launch an updated website. Those were future plans at the time of publication, not confirmation that either distribution route became available. The reviewed sources do not establish the backup’s current access status.

A March 2026 discussion on Reddit includes individual comments asking what was in the repository and where to find the replacement site or torrents. Those comments reflect specific users’ questions; they do not confirm that downloads were released. Reddit discussion
What is known—and not known—about preservation?
A complete preservation claim is strongest when it can be checked against a file inventory, checksums, and a documented restoration process. None of those verification details is established by the reviewed report. It also does not explain how the reported 385 TB was stored or whether the backup has redundancy.

One commenter in the Reddit discussion described keeping curated No-Intro and Redump collections on a NAS. That is an individual example of personal storage practice, not evidence about the Myrient backup’s storage architecture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are the files legal to download or share?
The Notebookcheck article characterizes ROM files as largely in a legal gray area, but the available sources do not establish the permissions for particular files or the laws that apply in each jurisdiction. Legality can depend on the specific game, how a copy was made, and local law; the report is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice. A preservation claim does not itself establish permission to distribute copyrighted files.
