Boruto is still an official Naruto sequel. VIZ continues to publish Boruto: Two Blue Vortex through Shonen Jump, while the Naruto Official Site presents it as the next-generation story of the Naruto world. The argument that Boruto “isn’t canon” comes from a dispute over authorship and personal standards—not from an official continuity ruling.
What the official record says
VIZ lists Boruto: Two Blue Vortex as a Shonen Jump manga, credits Masashi Kishimoto with “Creation/Supervision,” and credits Mikio Ikemoto with the art. Its listing also includes collected volumes. The Naruto Official Site maintains a dedicated Two Blue Vortex special site, identifies Ikemoto as the author, and places the series within the Naruto franchise.

Those are the normal indicators of an authorized sequel: an established publisher distributes it, the franchise’s official site promotes it, and the work is sold as part of that continuity. Neither official page announces that Boruto has been removed from Naruto continuity.
Why Kishimoto’s “Ikemoto’s manga” comment is misunderstood
The most frequently cited evidence in the canon argument is a statement Kishimoto made in an interview on the official Naruto site:

For Boruto, Ikemoto is completely in charge of the story and main illustrations. It really is Ikemoto’s manga.
Kishimoto was describing creative responsibility. He was not declaring the sequel unofficial, canceled, or disconnected from Naruto. “Ikemoto’s manga” distinguishes who leads the writing and drawing from who originally created the Naruto property.

Authorship and continuity are related but different questions. A series can remain an official sequel while a different creator handles its day-to-day story and art. Treating a change in lead creator as an automatic canon reset confuses production roles with franchise status.
How Boruto began
Boruto did not appear as an unauthorized fan continuation. MANGA Plus describes the sequel’s origin in the official Shueisha production context. The story began with Boruto: Naruto the Movie. Ikemoto explained that Kishimoto did not intend to write more stories about Boruto and his friends, so Kishimoto suggested that Ikemoto make the sequel.

Ikemoto has also stated: My utmost priority is to complete the entire story for BORUTO.
That account supports a planned handoff within the Naruto publishing operation, not a series that exists outside it.

Why the debate keeps resurfacing

Some Naruto readers associate canon exclusively with Kishimoto writing and drawing every chapter. Because Ikemoto handles the main story and illustrations, those readers regard the sequel as separate in spirit even while acknowledging its official release.

Disagreement over the sequel itself
Readers who dislike particular characters, developments, or narrative choices may use “not canon” as shorthand for rejecting them. That reaction expresses dissatisfaction, not evidence that the work has lost its official status.
New Naruto projects amplify the argument
A current moderator megathread on the Boruto subreddit recorded a surge in canonicity posts after news of a new Naruto manga. The comments include readers defending Boruto’s status and readers disputing it. The thread demonstrates active disagreement, but it cannot show what all Naruto fans believe, and its post volume, votes, or comments cannot be converted into a fandom percentage.
What has not been established
- No official Naruto or VIZ announcement in the cited material says that Boruto or Two Blue Vortex has been removed from continuity.
- Kishimoto’s statement about Ikemoto’s control does not say that Boruto is non-canon.
- There is no reliable publisher survey or representative statistic measuring how many fans accept or reject Boruto’s canon status.
So, is Two Blue Vortex official Naruto?
Yes. It is an officially published and officially branded Naruto sequel, with Kishimoto’s creation/supervision credit and Ikemoto as the lead creator of the manga’s story and main illustrations. Fans can adopt a narrower, Kishimoto-only definition of canon for personal discussion, but that preference should be labeled as such. The claim that Boruto is “no longer canon” is a fandom argument, not an official decision.
