In the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series, stage points and race-finish points both count toward a driver’s event total and the championship standings. Stage points reward the top 10 at the end of each of the first two stages; finish points reward the final running order. A strong stage result can therefore add points even when a driver’s final finish is lower.
What is the difference between stage points and race-finish points?
| Scoring category | When it is earned | 2026 Cup Series award |
|---|---|---|
| Stage points | At the end of each of the first two stages | Top 10 score: 10 points for first, decreasing by one point per position to 1 point for 10th |
| Race-finish points | From the final finishing order after the last stage | Winner: 55 points; second: 35; third: 34; fourth: 33; one fewer point for each subsequent position |
The categories differ in timing and result: stage points reward performance at two intermediate checkpoints, while finish points are based on the final race order. Both are added to the driver’s points total. NASCAR’s 2026 scoring and format explanation describes stage awards as additional points added to those earned after the final stage.

How do stage points change a race-day total?
Consider this hypothetical illustration, not a reported race result: Driver A wins Stage 1 (10 points), finishes eighth in Stage 2 (3 points), and finishes fifth in the race (32 finish points). The driver scores 45 points for the event: 10 + 3 + 32. The intermediate stage results add to the total rather than replacing the points earned for the final finish.
How do these points affect the 2026 standings?
Before the postseason, points accumulate across the 26-race regular season. The top 16 drivers in the standings after those races qualify for the 10-race Chase; a win alone does not guarantee a place. NASCAR’s announcement of the 2026 Chase format explains that qualification is based on points standing, ending the previous “win-and-you’re-in” approach.

NASCAR’s Cup Series standings page shows overall points alongside a separate “Stage Points” column. That column is a stage-points subtotal/statistic displayed with the standings; it is not a second championship tally in addition to the overall points total.
What changes when the 2026 Chase begins?
At the start of the Chase, points reset once according to each driver’s regular-season seed. The first seed starts with 2,100 points, the second with 2,075, the third with 2,065, and the total drops by five points per seed thereafter, reaching 2,000 for 16th. Points then accumulate over the 10 Chase races. There are no eliminations, no bankable playoff points, and the driver with the most points after the season finale is champion.

Why do 2026 points figures differ from older explanations?
The 2026 Cup race winner earns 55 points, 15 more than under the prior 40-point winner structure. Second still earns 35 points, with the descending scale continuing from third. Stage awards remain 10 through 1 for the top 10. NASCAR’s 2020 points explainer describes the older structure, including playoff bonus points for race and stage wins; those are historical rules, not the 2026 system.
