When Windows says natnetlib.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the OptiTrack-related application, plugin, or custom client that depends on it rather than downloading a loose DLL.
The correct fix is usually to restore the matching NatNet SDK files beside the application executable. Check the architecture first, because 32-bit and 64-bit clients use different SDK folders.

What natnetlib.dll does
NatNet is OptiTrack’s client/server networking SDK. It allows software to receive motion-capture data, including reconstructed 3D points, rigid bodies, and skeleton data, from a server such as Motive.
The file can be used by several types of software:
- NatNet sample clients
- Custom C++ applications
- Applications using the Rigid Body Toolkit
- .NET clients using
NatNetML.dll - Unreal Engine OptiTrack plugins
- Media-server integrations such as Notch
That means there is no single universal program to reinstall. The failing executable, plugin, or parent application owns the copy that Windows needs.

For native C++ clients, the application normally uses NatNetLib.dll directly. Managed .NET clients commonly use NatNetML.dll, which in turn depends on the native NatNetLib.dll. Both files must come from a compatible SDK release.
OptiTrack’s official developer-tools downloads area is the safe source for the NatNet SDK. Do not treat a third-party DLL listing as proof that a particular version, size, hash, or publisher field is correct.
First, identify which application is failing
Before replacing anything, find the program that is requesting the file.
Look for the error in:
- The application name shown in the dialog title.
- The shortcut you used to launch the program.
- A plugin folder, such as an Unreal Engine project or media-server installation.
- The folder containing the executable.
- A launcher or application log.
- Task Manager, if the error appears during startup.
To check the executable location:
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Select Open File Location if available.
If the problem appeared after reinstalling Motive, updating a plugin, rebuilding a custom client, extracting a ZIP archive, or changing SDK versions, that event is an important clue. If antivirus recently quarantined a file, check that before reinstalling everything.
Fix 1: Repair the parent application
This is the safest first repair for packaged software, plugins, and sample applications.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the OptiTrack, Motive, Unreal plugin, media-server integration, or other affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
The Repair option may not be available for every traditional desktop program.
Traditional desktop applications
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the affected program.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart the application.
If the repair completes but the same error remains, uninstall the affected application and install it again from the vendor’s official package. For an Unreal Engine or media-server plugin, repair or reinstall the plugin and its packaged dependencies instead of copying files into Windows folders.
A launcher’s Verify files, Repair, or equivalent option is preferable to manual replacement when the program provides one.
How to tell it worked: the application opens without the natnetlib.dll message, and the repaired program’s installation folder contains the required NatNet files.
Fix 2: Restore the matching NatNet SDK files
Use this method for a custom NatNet client or when you have the official SDK package.

OptiTrack documents these library locations:
- A 32-bit application uses
NatNet SDKlibNatNetLib.dll. - A 64-bit application uses
NatNet SDKlibx64NatNetLib.dll.
Copy the correct vendor-supplied file beside the executable that loads it. For example, if the failing program is:
C:AppsTrackingClientTrackingClient.exe
the DLL should normally be in:
C:AppsTrackingClientNatNetLib.dll
Do not copy the file to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

For a managed client, restore the matching pair:
NatNetML.dll
NatNetLib.dll
Do not combine NatNetML.dll from one SDK release with NatNetLib.dll from another. Also keep the headers, import libraries, and plugin binaries aligned with the same SDK release when rebuilding a native client.
How to tell it worked: launch the same executable from its normal shortcut. If the error changes from “file not found” to a different dependency error, Windows has found NatNetLib.dll and the next problem needs separate diagnosis.
Fix 3: Correct a 32-bit or 64-bit mismatch
A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit applications. Therefore, Windows being 64-bit does not automatically mean that the 64-bit NatNet library is correct.
The application architecture must match the library:

To check a running program:
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Esc. - Open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform if available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Some Windows versions show a *32 suffix for 32-bit processes. For a custom application, check the project’s platform target in Visual Studio or inspect the executable with the application vendor’s diagnostic instructions.
If the client is 32-bit, use the SDK’s lib copy. If it is 64-bit, use the copy in libx64. Reinstall the complete matching SDK if you are unsure which files belong together.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine an application library after an update or extraction.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Find the event involving
NatNetLib.dllor the affected application. - Expand the event details.
- Confirm that the file came from the legitimate OptiTrack or application package.
- Restore or allow it only after verifying the source and scanning the package.
Do not disable antivirus protection just to obtain a DLL from an unknown website. If the file was restored but disappears again, update the legitimate application and contact the application vendor or security-software vendor rather than repeatedly downloading replacements.

Fix 5: Investigate a dependent DLL
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that NatNetLib.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while one of its own native dependencies is missing.
Check the application folder for these situations:
NatNetLib.dllis present but will not load.NatNetML.dllis present but reports a native loading failure.- The SDK was copied without all supporting runtime files.
- A plugin was updated while the older NatNet files remained.
- The application was built for a different architecture.
A particular build may also require a compatible Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Microsoft provides official x86, x64, and ARM64 redistributable packages. Install the architecture required by the application, and use the application vendor’s instructions when an older runtime is specified. Reinstalling Visual C++ is not the primary fix for every NatNet error.
How to tell it worked: the loader error disappears after the required runtime or dependency is installed. If it does not, use the application log or a dependency-loading diagnostic to identify the exact missing module instead of guessing.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other programs are also failing
Because NatNetLib.dll is an application library, Windows repair commands are a lower-priority step. Use them when multiple unrelated applications show loading errors or Windows components appear damaged.

First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Start.
- Go to Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. Restart Windows and test the application again.
These commands repair protected Windows components. They do not download or replace a missing third-party NatNet SDK library.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and unclear. Fix 7: Update drivers only when the host application points to them
A graphics, camera, network, or motion-capture driver is not normally the source of NatNetLib.dll itself. Consider driver work only if the affected application also reports device initialization, rendering, network, or capture failures.

- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a rollback:
- In Device Manager, right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver if available.
Hunting through hardware vendors for the right package can be tedious, especially when several devices have stale drivers. System Restore can help when the error clearly began after a recent software or system change and no repair installer is available.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings without removing personal files, but it is not the preferred method for repairing a missing SDK. Create a backup of important work before proceeding.
What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible release, or a file that does not include the dependency causing the failure. A replacement may also hide an incomplete installation until the next update.

Obtain NatNet through the official OptiTrack developer-tools download area or repair the application that installed it.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
NatNet is loaded as an application library beside the executable. System-folder copying can create version conflicts and make it unclear which program owns the file.
Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. OptiTrack documents NatNet as an application library loaded beside the consuming executable, not as a COM component. Registration will not repair a missing or mismatched NatNet SDK.
Do not mix SDK releases
Do not pair an old NatNetML.dll with a newer NatNetLib.dll, or use a plugin built against a different SDK without checking compatibility. Replace the complete matching set.

Is natnetlib.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with OptiTrack’s NatNet SDK and with applications that use that SDK.

Which version should I download?

No Windows optional feature is documented here as the source of NatNet. Enabling .NET or another Windows feature will not restore a missing native SDK file unless the specific application’s documentation requires it.
What information should I give support?
Provide the exact application or plugin name, full error text, executable architecture, NatNet SDK release, installation path, and whether the problem started after an update, reinstall, extraction, rebuild, or antivirus quarantine.
