The file is described as Windows Shell LUA/PA Elevation Factory Dll and is normally located at:
C:WindowsSystem32shpafact.dll
Its role is associated with Windows Shell elevation and COM activation. Public technical records also associate it with Windows File Sharing, although Microsoft does not publish a detailed component reference for this internal DLL.

A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave protected system files damaged or missing. Updating Windows first gives the later repair commands the best chance of restoring the correct component for your build.
Windows 11
- Right-click Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
Try the operation that originally produced the error. If shpafact.dll is still reported as missing, continue with the component repair commands.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source Windows uses to replace damaged protected files. SFC then checks the active Windows installation and restores files such as shpafact.dll when a valid copy is available.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Click Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run the System File Checker command:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program or Windows feature again.
A successful SFC result usually says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart once and run the same SFC command again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsManually hunting through Windows folders and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows detected problems, while repairs are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the authoritative fix for this Microsoft component.
If DISM reports that repair files cannot be found
Windows may need a matching installation source.
- Make sure your installation media matches the installed Windows edition and architecture.
- Identify the correct drive letter for that media.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM with a matching source, using the actual source path:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<repair-source> /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed Windows build closely enough for servicing to use it. Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance explains the available source options.
If SFC still cannot repair the file, review:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
That log can show which component Windows could not restore.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file after detecting suspicious modification, or after a damaged file triggers a detection. Do not restore the file blindly.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry that mentions
shpafact.dll. - Confirm that the reported path is the expected Windows location, normally
%SystemRoot%System32. - Check whether the file has a valid Microsoft digital signature before considering restoration.
- Run a full scan if the file was removed unexpectedly.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. Only allow or restore it when its authenticity and location are established. If the detection involves an unfamiliar folder, a recently downloaded replacement, or a file without a valid Microsoft signature, leave it quarantined and remove the untrusted copy.
After quarantine handling, run DISM and SFC again. Windows servicing is safer than copying the quarantined file back manually.
Fix 4: Repair Windows after a failed update
Time needed: 15–60 minutes
If the problem began immediately after an update, the update may have left servicing incomplete or exposed existing component-store damage.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
First, install all pending updates and restart. If the error remains:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update on Windows 11, or Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10.
- Open Update history.
- Note the update installed immediately before the problem appeared.
- Use Microsoft’s recovery options to determine whether uninstalling that update or using System Restore is appropriate.
System Restore is a fallback rather than the first repair. It can roll back system files and settings, but recent drivers, updates, applications, and settings may also be affected.
Fix 5: Use Windows 11 repair reinstall
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
Supported Windows 11 installations may offer a repair reinstall that refreshes Windows components without removing personal files, installed applications, or settings.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Click Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
- Restart when the process completes.
- Test the operation that produced the
shpafact.dllerror.
If Reinstall now is unavailable, use official Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Choose Keep personal files and apps when that option is presented. Back up important files before any reinstall or reset operation.
Fix 6: Check the file path and digital signature
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
This check helps distinguish a missing Windows file from an unsafe replacement.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%SystemRoot%System32in the address bar. - Look for
shpafact.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
The expected component is associated with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Corporation. File version, size, hash, and architecture vary between Windows releases, so do not judge authenticity by finding a number from another computer.
If the file exists but Windows still cannot load it, the message may refer to a dependency rather than to shpafact.dll itself. An incompatible architecture or another damaged system component can produce “The specified module could not be found.”
Fix 7: Update drivers only if the failure began with hardware or Windows integration
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Driver repair is not the default solution for shpafact.dll. Consider it when the problem appeared after a hardware change, a storage problem, or a Windows update that affected system integration.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories connected to the failing operation, such as Storage controllers, Network adapters, Display adapters, or System devices.
- Right-click the suspected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the issue began directly after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart and test again.
Manually identifying which of dozens of installed drivers is stale can take longer than the actual repair. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing detected driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace Windows repair or the correct vendor driver.
Do not register or download shpafact.dll
Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 shpafact.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Public export records for shpafact.dll list DllGetClassObject and DllCanUnloadNow, not DllRegisterServer. Registering it is therefore not the normal repair path and may simply produce another error.
Why manual copying fails
Downloading a DLL from a random website can give you:

- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A modified or unsigned file
- Malware
- A file that does not match its dependencies
It can also hide the actual cause, such as component-store corruption or antivirus removal. Windows’ DLL loader uses defined application and system search paths, so placing an arbitrary copy in an application folder can create a different loading problem rather than fixing the original one.
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, Windows Recovery, or official Windows installation media.
What causes shpafact.dll errors?
The most likely causes are:
- Corruption of a protected Windows system file
- Damage to the Windows component store
- An interrupted or failed update
- Antivirus quarantine or removal
- Disk or filesystem damage
- Malware tampering
- An incompatible manually supplied DLL
- A damaged Windows installation
There is no reliable evidence that a particular game, Photoshop installation, Skype installation, DirectX package, or Visual C++ Redistributable normally installs this file. shpafact.dll is a Windows component, not a normal Visual C++ runtime file.
Common error messages
Windows and third-party indexing pages report variants such as:
- “The program can’t start because shpafact.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because shpafact.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading shpafact.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “shpafact.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The file ‘shpafact.dll’ could not be loaded or is corrupt.”
The exact wording varies by Windows release and the program making the request.
FAQ
Is shpafact.dll a virus?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows DLL. A copy in an unusual folder, without a valid Microsoft signature, or obtained from an unofficial download should be treated as untrusted and scanned.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is shpafact.dll part of Visual C++?
No evidence associates this Windows Shell component with the Visual C++ Redistributable. Repair Windows first rather than reinstalling Visual C++ as a default response.
Does it matter whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit?
Yes. Public inventories show both 32-bit and 64-bit builds across Windows releases. Version and architecture vary by Windows build, so never copy an x86 DLL into a 64-bit system directory or select a download because it is labeled “newest.”
Should I enable a Windows Feature?
Not normally. shpafact.dll is restored through Windows servicing, not by enabling a random optional feature. Use DISM and SFC first.
What if Windows will not boot?
Enter Windows Recovery Environment and use System Restore, recovery options, or official installation media. Back up important data before reset or reinstall operations.
What if the error returns after SFC and DISM?
Check Windows Security Protection history, Windows Update history, disk health, the file’s expected path, and its Microsoft digital signature. If repairs continue to fail, use the Windows 11 repair reinstall or matching installation media.
