Range of modes and MyCareer’s Neighborhood
GameSpot’s review emphasized the number of ways to play and singled out MyCareer, a story-driven mode built around a created player. Its new Neighborhood concept placed activities and interactions in a shared hub. That broader presentation gave MyCareer a more prominent identity than a simple sequence of games.

Why was NBA 2K18 so disliked by some players?
Microtransactions became a central complaint
Microtransactions were a prominent criticism in the review coverage. GameSpot’s review explicitly addresses them, and the gap between the PS4 critic and user scores is consistent with a much less positive player response overall. The available evidence does not establish that every mode required spending, or a specific amount a player had to pay; it is more accurate to say that the game’s virtual-currency and monetization systems drew strong criticism.
Technical reliability was another concern
Some reviews also raised bugs or online-server instability. Those criticisms help explain why favorable judgments of the basketball simulation did not translate into uniformly positive experiences. They do not establish that every platform or player encountered the same technical problems.

Is NBA 2K18 worth playing or buying now?
It may appeal to someone interested in the on-court simulation, a wide selection of modes or the particular MyCareer structure. The reasons for caution are the game’s well-documented microtransaction criticism and reports of technical or online issues. Whether it is a good choice depends on which modes matter to you and whether you can play those modes in the version and condition you find.
NBA 2K18 is an older annual sports release, so a used copy’s price, condition, region and format can vary. Confirm that a listing is for the correct platform and edition before buying. Can you still play NBA 2K18 online?
Current NBA 2K18 online-service status is not established by the official 2K Support page checked for this article. Its current services table begins with NBA 2K22 and does not list NBA 2K18.
