NBA 2K25 multiplayer lag on PC can mean delayed inputs or disconnections, low or uneven frame rates, or both. Those symptoms need different checks, and 2K’s published guidance does not establish one universal fix. Start by identifying which problem you have, then work through the network and PC checks below.
First, identify what “lag” means in your case
Notice whether the problem is delayed response or disconnects, visible stutter or low frame rate, or a combination. A slow-feeling online match is not by itself proof that the network is at fault.
- Delayed response or disconnects: Check whether the issue occurs only online, whether it affects one mode or several, and whether other online games are affected.
- Low or uneven frame rate: Compare the game’s performance offline and online, and check whether the PC meets the published requirements.
- Both: Work through the network checks and the PC baseline separately; one can be healthy while the other is not.
These comparisons help narrow the problem, but do not prove a particular cause. If the issue is limited to one NBA 2K25 online mode, note that when contacting support.
Check that the PC meets NBA 2K25’s requirements
NBA 2K Support lists the following PC requirements. They are a compatibility baseline, not a guarantee of smooth multiplayer or a healthy connection. Confirm the separate AVX2 and DirectX feature level 12.0 compatibility notes as well as the listed component names. If the game stutters offline too, a network-only fix is unlikely to address that symptom.
Try the low-disruption network checks first
2K’s PC: General Network Troubleshooting guide covers disconnections, lag, and other online errors. Its steps are general PC network diagnostics, not a confirmed NBA 2K25-specific fix.

- Check other devices and pause competing traffic. Temporarily pause downloads, streams, and other online games on your network. 2K notes that a busy network can increase the risk of disconnections.
- Test without a VPN. If VPN software is active, turn it off for a comparison, then check the same game mode again.
- Check firewall and security software access. Make sure NBA 2K25 is allowed through Windows Firewall and any security software. If you temporarily disable protection for a test, follow 2K’s instructions and restore it afterward.
If the symptom changes after one of these comparisons, that is useful evidence about your local setup, not proof that the same cause applies to every player.
Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If you play over Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet. 2K’s guide recommends connecting the PC directly to the modem for this test and warns that other devices may lose connectivity while it is connected that way. If you need a cable, an Ethernet cable can enable the comparison; it cannot guarantee a fix for server-side issues or low frame rates.

- Save any ongoing downloads or work on other devices that depend on the connection.
- Connect the PC directly to the modem with Ethernet, as described by 2K, and run the affected online mode again.
- Compare the result with your usual Wi-Fi setup. If the issue remains, proceed to the software and network checks rather than assuming the game itself is at fault.
Try DNS and network-adapter checks
2K also suggests public DNS, flushing the DNS cache, and updating the network adapter driver. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed performance optimizations. Use the instructions in 2K’s network troubleshooting guide for the relevant Windows steps.
- Try one change at a time so you can tell whether it affects the symptom.
- After changing DNS or updating a driver, retest the same mode under comparable conditions.
- If a change makes no difference or causes a new problem, restore the prior setting where possible.
Treat router settings as temporary tests
2K mentions dynamic packet filtering or stateful inspection, Quality of Service (QoS), and UPnP among router settings players may try changing. Router menus differ, so consult your router’s documentation before changing a setting.

- Record the original value before changing anything.
- Change only one setting, then test the game.
- If there is no improvement, restore that setting before trying another. 2K specifically advises reverting router changes that do not help.
Escalate with evidence if the problem continues
The NBA 2K25 troubleshooting page links to 2K’s general PC network guide and support route. If you contact 2K, the network guide asks for information that can help support investigate the connection rather than just the word “lag.”
- Your region and internet service provider (ISP).
- Screenshots of any error messages.
- Screenshots of a speed test and your public IP address.
- Windows PathPing and traceroute results to
104.255.107.131, following the commands in 2K’s guide.
Include whether the issue affects one mode or multiple modes, whether it occurs in other online games, and whether a wired test changed anything. Avoid posting your public IP address publicly; provide it only through the support channel when requested.

Check the online-service schedule
As listed on Steam on October 8, 2026, NBA 2K25 multiplayer servers are scheduled to shut down on December 31, 2026. Steam lists Play Now, MyNBA, and The W as offline modes; other modes or features require an internet connection. This is a scheduled date and may change, so check the NBA 2K25 Steam listing for the current status.
