The feature list also includes shooting, finishing, defense, controls and AI updates—but 2K’s July 31, 2025 announcement describes intended changes, not independently tested results. ProPLAY applies only to the game’s Gen 9 versions.
What ProPLAY does in NBA 2K26
2K describes ProPLAY as technology that translates real NBA footage into in-game action and realistic animations. In NBA 2K26, it powers an all-new Dynamic Motion Engine built with machine-learning technology. The engine uses dynamic lower-body pose matching to adjust a player’s legs and feet as they move, including when launching, planting or cutting.

2K calls this the “biggest change to player movement since NBA 2K21.” That is the publisher’s characterization; its announcement does not provide comparative gameplay measurements or independent test results. Read 2K’s July 31, 2025 gameplay announcement.
Other announced gameplay changes
Shooting and finishing
- Enhanced Rhythm Shooting: 2K says shooting should offer more control and make jump shots more responsive and lifelike.
- Shot timing: Green-or-Miss Shot Timing is universal on higher difficulty levels, and Layup Timing is permanently enabled.
- Post shots: Big men get Signature Go-To Post Shots, including shimmy floaters and up-and-unders.
- Layup packages: Players can mix and match advanced layup styles from different athletes to create custom packages.
Controls and offensive options
The announcement lists several control additions and changes: Quick Protect to shield the ball from steals, no-dip catch-and-shoots, slow-motion Eurosteps, wrap-pass controls, randomized alley-oop button selections on higher difficulties and directional screen setting.

Defense and collisions
2K says ProPLAY-powered system technology will generate player-to-player collisions more reliably than previous motion-captured animations. The announced defensive changes include new body-ups and collisions, redesigned Interior Defense intended to make it easier to contact shooters around the rim—including body-to-body contact in the air—and Rebound Timing Feedback. These are descriptions of intended behavior, not independently verified outcomes.
AI, coaching and tutorials
2K lists AI that adapts to player movement, an offensive intelligence module that looks for drive-and-kick chances beyond standard plays, enhanced double-team logic, improved defender logic and expanded playbooks. It also says AI difficulty has been improved and that AI Shot Timing Ability can be adjusted in Play Now and MyNBA. Learn 2K adds intermediate tutorials for techniques such as layups, dunks and pick-and-rolls.

Which versions include ProPLAY?
The July gameplay announcement limits ProPLAY, The City, The W and MyNBA to Gen 9 NBA 2K26. It names PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch 2 for the Gen 9 feature announcement. Do not assume that every platform version of NBA 2K26 includes ProPLAY.

The standard and WNBA editions launched worldwide on September 5, 2025, on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam. How much gameplay evidence is available?
The cited material is publisher information, not an independent review or benchmark. It describes features and intended effects but does not establish how much better the game plays than NBA 2K25 or quantify the motion engine’s performance.
