A rookie’s starter or rotation player label describes how a coach uses him. A two-way contract, a standard NBA contract, or a G League assignment describes his contract or roster status. These are separate things: a two-way player can play in the G League, and a player assigned there can still have a standard NBA contract.
Starter and rotation player describe game roles
Starter
A starter usually appears in the opening lineup. Starting tells you how the coach deployed the player in a particular game or stretch of games; it does not identify his contract type or guarantee that he will start regularly.
Rotation player
A rotation player receives regular playing time as part of the coach’s game plan. He may start or come off the bench. A rookie can become a rotation player without becoming a starter, or move between those roles as the team’s needs change.
“Starter” and “rotation player” are ordinary descriptions of playing use, not formal NBA contract categories. A player’s role can change while his contract status stays the same.

What a two-way contract means in 2025-26
A two-way player signs with an NBA team and can play for that team and its G League affiliate, subject to the season’s rules. For the 2025-26 season, an NBA team may have up to three two-way players in addition to a maximum of 15 players on standard NBA contracts. A two-way deal may cover one or two seasons.
2025-26 limits and salary
- NBA Active List: A two-way player may be on his NBA team’s Active List for no more than 50 regular-season games.
- Under-Fifteen Games: The team’s aggregate limit is 90. An Under-Fifteen Game is a regular-season game in which the team has fewer than 15 players signed to standard NBA contracts. The game counts once for each two-way player active in it.
- Days of Service: Two-way players do not accrue Days of Service for either team during 2025-26, so the prior 45-day service limit does not apply that season.
- Salary: The stated 2025-26 annual salary is $636,435, equal to half the zero-years-of-service NBA minimum. For a deal signed during the regular season, the amount is prorated for the remaining season.
Eligibility is generally limited to players who will not have more than four NBA years of service at any point during the two-way deal. The NBA G League’s 2025-26 rules describe a narrow one-year exception for a player with four years of service who spent a full NBA regular season on a team roster without appearing in an NBA game. These limits and terms are season-specific; they should not be treated as permanent rules.

Postseason eligibility
A player on a two-way contract may travel and practice with his NBA team during the play-in and playoffs, but that status alone does not make him eligible for the NBA playoff roster. A player signed or converted to a standard NBA contract before his team’s final regular-season game may be eligible for the postseason roster.
How two-way players, assignees and call-ups differ
“G League player” can refer to different contract situations. The key is whether the player is under a two-way deal, remains on a standard NBA contract while assigned, or has moved from a G League contract to an NBA contract.

An assignee keeps his NBA contract
An NBA team can assign a player who already has an NBA contract to its G League team. The assignment does not turn him into a two-way player; the NBA team retains exclusive recall rights. The NBA G League FAQ reported that 109 NBA players were assigned to G League teams during the 2024-25 regular season and that all 109 were recalled. That league-reported season count describes assignments and recalls, not a promise of a particular role or playing time after recall.
A call-up changes the contract
A call-up is different: a player who had a G League contract signs an NBA contract with an NBA team. The NBA G League also lists other routes into its teams, including affiliate players, draft-rights players, local tryout players and G League draft selections.

Why the G League matters to NBA rookies
The G League gives teams another setting in which players can develop and compete. NBA G League reported that 51 percent of players on 2025-26 NBA start-of-season rosters had G League experience, tying the previous season. That figure is about experience across NBA rosters; it is not a rookie-specific promotion rate, and it does not mean a G League stint guarantees an NBA role.
When assessing a rookie, keep four questions separate: how often he plays, what contract he has, whether he has been assigned to a development team, and what eligibility limits apply. A rookie can be a reserve on a standard contract, a starter on a two-way deal when eligible to play, or a standard-contract player assigned to the G League. The role and the pathway are related in practice, but one does not define the other.
