ncdautosetup.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, not a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, game, or third-party runtime file. If ncdautosetup.dll is missing or cannot load, repair Windows servicing first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is associated with the Network Connected Devices Auto-Setup service, named NcdAutoSetup. Windows uses this service to help set up qualifying network-connected devices. A missing-file message can indicate that the DLL is damaged or absent, but “specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency could not be loaded.
Work through these fixes in order. Restart Windows after the repair commands before testing again.
1. Check the Windows copy and its signature
Time needed: 5 minutes
The normal native location is:
%windir%System32NcdAutoSetup.dll
To check it:
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter
%windir%System32. - Press Enter.
- Find
NcdAutoSetup.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
A genuine Windows copy should identify Microsoft as the signer. Select the signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.

You can also inspect the Details tab for the file description, version, and other Windows product information. Do not expect one universal version or file size. Those details vary by Windows release, architecture, servicing branch, and installed updates.
If the file is absent, do not immediately copy one from another PC. A replacement from a different Windows build or architecture can create a second problem.
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit process may see a redirected system-file location through %windir%SysWOW64. Windows file-system redirection determines which architecture-specific copy a process loads. Do not manually swap files between System32 and SysWOW64; Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
A file called NcdAutoSetup.dll.mui is different. The .mui file contains language resources and is not a replacement for the executable DLL.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →2. Check whether Windows Security quarantined it
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Windows Defender or another antivirus product may quarantine a system file after a false positive, malware event, or file-change detection.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent events involving
NcdAutoSetup.dll. - Expand an event to see its path, detection name, and action.
Only consider restoring the file if all of these are true:
- The path is the expected Windows system location.
- The file has a valid Microsoft signature.
- The detection is demonstrably a false positive.
- A full security scan does not indicate broader compromise.
Microsoft documents quarantine and restoration in its guide to Protection history. Protection History normally keeps events for only a limited period, so an older quarantine event may no longer be visible.
If the file is unsigned, stored in an unusual folder, or associated with suspicious activity, do not restore it. Update security definitions, run a full scan, and use Microsoft Defender Offline when persistent malware is suspected.

3. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is the main repair for a missing or damaged copy in %windir%System32. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC uses that repaired source to check protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
The normal successful outcomes are that DISM reports the restore operation completed and SFC reports either that it found no integrity violations or that it found and repaired damaged files. Test the affected Windows function after restarting.
If DISM cannot find repair files because Windows Update cannot supply the source, Microsoft documents this form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid matching Windows installation source. Do not use a source from a different edition, language, architecture, or build.
While you can run these commands manually, repeated repairs become difficult to track when you do not know which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; its full version handles the repair, but it is optional and does not replace Microsoft’s built-in servicing tools.
If SFC says it repaired files but the error remains:
- Restart again.
- Repeat the action that produced the error.
- Check whether the message names a dependency rather than the DLL itself.
- Run DISM and SFC again if corruption returns.
- Review the SFC details with:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
If SFC cannot repair some files, run DISM again, verify the repair source, and continue to the Windows repair options later in this guide.
4. Install pending Windows updates
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus restart time
A failed or incomplete update can leave a Windows component mismatched or unavailable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Do not assume that a Windows 10 installation receives the same ongoing support path as a supported Windows 11 installation.

If the issue began immediately after an interrupted update, run DISM and SFC again after Windows Update completes. The repaired component may depend on the update process finishing successfully.
5. Use Windows 11’s repair reinstall when available
Time needed: 30–60 minutes
Supported Windows 11 installations may offer a repair reinstall that keeps apps, files, and settings while reinstalling the same Windows version.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Keep the computer connected to power and the internet.
- Follow the prompts and allow Windows to restart.
The option is not available on every Windows installation. Its availability can depend on the Windows version, update state, and management policies. Microsoft describes this feature in its guide to reinstalling the current version of Windows.

After it finishes, run the application or Windows action that previously produced the error.
6. Check the NcdAutoSetup service
Time needed: 5 minutes
The DLL belongs to the NcdAutoSetup Windows service, but a service that stops when it is not needed is not automatically broken.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Network Connected Devices Auto-Setup.
- Double-click it.
- Note its Service status and Startup type.
- Do not change the logon account or registry configuration as a first repair step.
A service set to Manual or Trigger Start may start only when Windows detects a suitable event. “The service started and then stopped” can be normal when no ongoing work is required.
If the service crashes, repeatedly fails to start, or produces an access-violation error, continue with Windows repair rather than registering the DLL. Do not delete the service or disable it merely to suppress the message, because that can affect automatic setup for qualifying network-connected devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Update network and device drivers
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A driver problem does not normally mean that NcdAutoSetup.dll itself is missing, but it can cause related device-setup failures.

When several devices have stale drivers, manually checking each model and architecture is time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; the free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it is not a substitute for repairing a damaged Windows component.

Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
If the problem started after a driver, update, cleanup operation, or system change, System Restore may return system files and settings to an earlier state.
Open Start, search for Create a restore point, open it, select System Restore, and choose a restore point from before the problem. Personal files are preserved, but programs, drivers, and settings installed after that point can be removed. Microsoft explains the recovery choices in its Windows recovery documentation.

Why the error appears
The likely causes include:
- A damaged or missing Windows component.
- An interrupted Windows update.
- Component-store corruption.
- Antivirus quarantine.
- Disk or file-system corruption.
- Malware altering a system DLL.
- A damaged Windows installation.
- An incorrect manual replacement with the wrong build or architecture.
- A historical Windows 8.1

What not to do
Do not download ncdautosetup.dll from a random DLL website. The file may be modified, unsigned, the wrong architecture, or from the wrong Windows build. Copying it can also leave the component store inconsistent or fail to repair a missing dependency.
Do not run regsvr32 as a general fix. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes it for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. NcdAutoSetup.dll is a Windows service DLL hosted by svchost, so registering it is not the normal repair path and may produce a missing-entry-point error.

FAQ
Is ncdautosetup.dll safe?
A genuine copy in the Windows system directory with a valid Microsoft signature is a legitimate Windows component. The filename alone does not prove that every copy is safe. Verify the path, signature, and security history.
Where should the file be?
The normal native location is %windir%System32. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit processes can be affected by file-system redirection and may use the architecture-specific system view. Do not copy files between System32 and SysWOW64 manually.
Does “specified module could not be found” mean the DLL is missing?
Not always. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the named DLL. Inspect the event context and repair Windows before assuming that the named file is the only problem.
Should I copy the DLL beside an application?
No. NcdAutoSetup.dll is a Windows component, not a normal application dependency. If the error appears only in one application, repair that application through its official installer or built-in repair feature, while also checking whether the message identifies a different dependency.
Will regsvr32 fix it?
No. It is not the standard repair method for this service DLL. Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and the recovery options above.
What if the error returns after every repair?
Check Protection history, run a full or offline malware scan, inspect disk health, and review the CBS log. Persistent corruption can indicate a failing drive, malware, or a damaged Windows installation that needs System Restore or an in-place repair.
