ndfetw.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL named Network Diagnostic Engine Event Interface. If Windows says ndfetw.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement file.
The file is associated with the Windows Network Diagnostics Framework, which is built into Windows. It is not normally supplied by Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a particular game. Depending on your Windows release and architecture, the legitimate copy may be under C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair system files
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus any download time
This is the safest first fix because ndfetw.dll is a protected Windows component.

Install pending updates
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately require a restart.
- Try the program again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and System File Checker.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer and test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Running SFC first can leave it without a healthy source, so use DISM first.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupt files, restart and retry the program. If it reports that it found no integrity violations but the error remains, the problem may be an application-specific failure or a missing dependency.
When repeatedly hunting through Windows components and interpreting DISM or SFC results becomes impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the correct repair route for ndfetw.dll.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFix 2: Check whether security software quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a system file after a false detection, or malware removal can leave Windows damaged.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections for
ndfetw.dllor a related Windows component. - Open the detection to view its path and details.
Do not restore the file merely because the filename matches. First verify that it was in a normal Windows system directory, was digitally signed by Microsoft, and was detected incorrectly. If the detection is unclear, leave the item quarantined and run a full scan.
If you confirm a false positive, use the action offered by Windows Security to restore or allow the item, then run DISM and SFC again. Update the security product before retrying the application. If malware may have modified Windows, run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan.
A copy found in a user profile, download directory, temporary folder, or unexpected application folder deserves extra scrutiny. Do not use that copy as a replacement for the Windows version.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If Windows works normally and only one program reports the error, the application may have a damaged installation, an incomplete update, or a missing dependency. Repair the application rather than copying ndfetw.dll into its folder.
Use Windows app repair options
For a Microsoft Store or supported Windows application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset, where available, or uninstall and reinstall it.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application’s menu.
- Choose Uninstall, or use the program’s own maintenance option.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application publisher or its official launcher.
- Install the current version and test it.
Some launchers call the repair process Verify files or Scan and repair. Use that option before reinstalling the entire program.
If the application still fails, record the exact error text and the application name. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency needed by the program is missing, not necessarily that ndfetw.dll itself is absent.

Fix 4: Verify the path, signature, and architecture
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Do not assume that every file named ndfetw.dll is genuine.
Check the file location
Look in these Windows directories:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64on 64-bit Windows when checking the 32-bit system-file set
The names can be confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. A 32-bit application may therefore request the 32-bit copy through Windows’ file-system redirection, even though the computer itself is 64-bit.
Use the copy supplied by the installed Windows build. Do not replace a 64-bit file with a 32-bit file, or mix files from another Windows release.

Check the digital signature
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the suspected file.
- Right-click
ndfetw.dlland select Properties. - Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft.
The exact version, size, and architecture vary with Windows release and servicing level. A matching Microsoft signature is more useful than comparing the file with an online version list.
If the file is missing from its normal location, return to DISM and SFC. Do not download an isolated copy.
Fix 5: Consider drivers only when the error began with a device problem
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
ndfetw.dll belongs to Windows networking diagnostics, but that does not mean a network driver owns the file. Do not start by replacing drivers unless the error began after a network adapter change, a device failure, or a Windows update involving hardware.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and version.
- Use Update Driver, or install a driver obtained from the computer or adapter manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete random DLLs or install a driver package from an unofficial source. If the machine has many outdated drivers and manually identifying the correct package is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can show driver issues in a scan; installing drivers requires the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.
Does regsvr32 fix ndfetw.dll?
Usually, no. regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide a registration server; it does not restore a deleted file or repair the Windows component store.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Some builds of ndfetw.dll have been reported to expose registration-related functions, so registration may technically apply to a present, matching Windows build. It should only be considered if a specific application or Microsoft troubleshooting procedure explicitly requires it.
Do not blindly run:
regsvr32 ndfetw.dll
If the file is missing, the command cannot restore it. If the file is corrupted or the wrong architecture, registration can add confusion without fixing the underlying issue. DISM and SFC are the normal repair tools.
If DISM says the source cannot be found
Time needed: 30 minutes or longer
A “source files could not be found” result means DISM could not obtain matching repair files from the component store or Windows Update.

Create a restore point. - Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.

Perform an in-place Windows repair
If Windows has broader corruption and System Restore does not help, use Microsoft’s supported in-place repair method for your Windows version. This reinstalls Windows system components while providing an opportunity to preserve personal files and applications, depending on the installation choices.
Back up important data first. If the disk is failing, repairs may not hold, so review disk-health warnings and seek professional recovery help before repeatedly modifying the installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat caused the ndfetw.dll error?
The most likely causes are:
| What happened | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| A protected Windows file was deleted or corrupted | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| An update or repair was interrupted | Restart, install pending updates, then repair Windows |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Inspect Protection history and verify the actual file before restoring |
| Only one application fails | Repair, verify, or reinstall that application |
| Malware altered Windows | Full security scan, followed by DISM and SFC |
| A 32-bit program runs on 64-bit Windows | Check the correct architecture and normal Windows paths |
| A dependency is missing | Identify the application and repair its installation |
| Broader Windows or disk corruption exists | System Restore, in-place repair, or recovery support |
There is no reliable basis for installing a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX, .NET, or a network driver solely because ndfetw.dll is mentioned. Those components may matter to the application that displays the error, but ndfetw.dll itself is a Windows networking component.
Avoid random DLL download sites
Do not download ndfetw.dll from a random DLL repository and place it in an application folder. The file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to another Windows release, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or damaged component store.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Microsoft recovery options, and the affected application’s official installer instead. Microsoft does not provide ndfetw.dll as a standalone download.
FAQ
Is ndfetw.dll a Windows file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows system DLL associated with the Windows Network Diagnostics Framework.
Should it be in System32 or SysWOW64?
That depends on Windows architecture and the file variant. System32 is the normal 64-bit system directory on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. A 32-bit application can request the 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows.
Why does the message say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The application may be unable to load a dependency required by ndfetw.dll or by the application itself. Check the application installation and repair Windows rather than copying another DLL beside the executable.
Should I register ndfetw.dll?
Not as a first step. regsvr32 does not restore missing files or repair Windows. Use it only when a specific, matching build and documented procedure require registration.
When should I reinstall the program?
Reinstall it when Windows passes its checks but only that application fails, especially after an interrupted update or when the program’s launcher offers a repair or file-verification option.
What if the error returns after repair?
Check Protection history, run a full security scan, review disk health, and consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair. A recurring failure usually indicates an underlying Windows, storage, malware, or application-installation problem rather than a DLL that needs repeated manual replacement.
