chtquickds.dll Is Missing: Rebuild the Windows Quick IME Safely

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this quick diagnosis

Before changing files, note:

  • Which program shows the error: Windows itself, an input-language tool, or one third-party application
  • The exact message: “missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “not designed to run on Windows”
  • When it began: after an update, language-pack removal, antivirus quarantine, cleanup utility, or servicing failure
  • Your Windows edition and build: open Settings > System > About
  • Whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit

chtquickds.dll is a Windows component associated with Microsoft’s Traditional Chinese Quick Input Method Editor (IME). It is not a general Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, game file, or hardware driver.

Microsoft describes Quick IME as an input method based on the first and last ChangJie elements of a character. The supported repair route is to reinstall the Traditional Chinese language component, repair Windows if necessary, and let Windows restore the file from its servicing sources. Microsoft’s Traditional Chinese IME documentation explains the feature and its installation.

What the chtquickds.dll error means

Common messages include:

  • “The program can’t start because chtquickds.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because chtquickds.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading chtquickds.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “chtquickds.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “ChtQuickDS.dll could not be loaded.”

These are Windows loader messages. They do not identify the exact cause by themselves.

The file may be found in a Windows system location such as C:WindowsSystem32ChtQuickDS.dll, or in a Traditional Chinese input-method directory such as C:WindowsInputMethodCHT. The location, version, architecture, and presence of the file depend on the Windows release, installed languages, servicing state, and whether the operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit.

A message saying “the specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of ChtQuickDS.dll is missing. The named file is not always the missing file.

Fix 1: Reinstall Traditional Chinese Quick IME

This is the most targeted fix when the file disappeared after removing a language, changing regional settings, or installing an incomplete language pack.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Time & language.
  3. Open Language & region.
  4. Select Add a language.
  5. Search for the appropriate Traditional Chinese language.
  6. Add Chinese (Traditional, Taiwan) where available.
  7. After installation, select the language’s More options button.
  8. Choose Language options.
  9. Check the Keyboards section for Microsoft Quick.
  10. If Quick is absent, use Add a keyboard and select it.
  11. Restart Windows.
  12. Press Windows logo key + Spacebar and select the Traditional Chinese input method.

Test the program that produced the error. If it opens and the Quick keyboard works, the language component was incomplete or removed.

On newer Windows releases, zh-TW is the supported Traditional Chinese, Taiwan language identity. Microsoft marks zh-HK as no longer used in its current language-pack table. Language components must match the exact Windows release; adding an incompatible package can create more servicing problems.

Fix 2: Install Windows updates

A failed or incomplete update can leave language components out of sync.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart when Windows requests it.
  6. Check for updates again after restarting.
  7. Test the affected application and switch input methods with Windows logo key + Spacebar.

Use Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance if Windows Update itself reports an error.

If you manage computers offline or through enterprise deployment, use matching Windows language-pack and Features-on-Demand media. A package such as Microsoft-Windows-Client-Language-Pack_x64_zh-tw.cab is tied to a particular Windows release and architecture. It is not a universal replacement for ChtQuickDS.dll.

Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

If reinstalling the language does not restore the file, repair the component store and protected system files. Run DISM first, then SFC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. It may appear to pause.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.

Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions specifically place DISM before SFC.

Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired corrupt files or found no integrity violations. If SFC says it could not repair everything, restart and run the commands again after confirming that Windows Update is working. Do not copy a replacement DLL into System32 manually.

Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can show a free scan of reported system problems, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the supported fix for this component.

Fix 4: Use the Windows 11 repair reinstall

On supported Windows 11 systems, Windows can reinstall the current version while preserving applications, personal files, and settings.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Click Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  7. Keep the computer connected to power and online.
  8. Restart when prompted.
  9. Test the Traditional Chinese language and the application again.

Microsoft documents this process in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.

If the option is unavailable, install pending updates first. Windows 10 does not provide this exact Windows 11 recovery option, so use language reinstallation, DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or an appropriate Windows repair installation instead.

Fix 5: Check Microsoft Defender Protection history

Antivirus quarantine is possible, particularly if the error started immediately after a security scan.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Open Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Click Protection history.
  6. Look for an event involving ChtQuickDS.dll or a related Windows input component.
  7. Open the event and review its path, detection name, and action.
  8. Do not restore the file solely because an application says it is missing.

Only consider restoring or allowing a quarantined file after verifying that it is in a normal Windows component path, has a valid Microsoft digital signature, and is not associated with another detection. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can expose the device. Run a full Defender scan if the quarantine event is unclear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After a safe restoration, restart Windows and repair the language component anyway. A restored file may still be damaged or mismatched.

Fix 6: Check architecture and dependencies

Do not assume that every copy of the file is interchangeable.

  • A 64-bit process normally uses the 64-bit Windows system component.
  • A 32-bit process may use the 32-bit Windows subsystem component.
  • A 32-bit DLL placed beside a 64-bit application, or the reverse, can produce a load failure.
  • “The specified module could not be found” may identify a missing dependency rather than a missing ChtQuickDS.dll.

Do not infer architecture from the filename. Check the affected program’s documentation or installation directory, and inspect the exact path shown in the error. A copy placed beside an application may hide the underlying language-component problem while creating version or signature conflicts.

If the problem occurs only in one program, repair Windows first, then use that program’s official installer to update or reinstall it. There is no reliable basis for assuming that a particular game or launcher owns this Windows component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Rule out unrelated driver problems

ChtQuickDS.dll is not normally repaired through Device Manager. However, if the error began after a system-wide hardware or chipset change, check for broader device problems.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Look for devices with a yellow warning icon.
  4. Expand relevant categories such as System devices, Keyboards, and Human Interface Devices.
  5. Right-click a clearly affected device and choose Update driver.
  6. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not remove an apparently healthy device merely because its name is unfamiliar. For a driver that repeatedly fails, obtain the driver from the computer or device manufacturer rather than using a random DLL site.

Manually hunting through many driver versions is slow and can introduce a mismatch. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated drivers with its free scan, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling Traditional Chinese Quick IME when that is the actual cause.

Do not download chtquickds.dll manually

Do not download this file from a random DLL website or copy it into System32, the application folder, or a game directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That approach can provide:

  • Malware disguised as a system file
  • The wrong Windows build
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
  • A file with incompatible dependencies
  • A temporary workaround that leaves the language component broken

There is no official Microsoft download page for a standalone ChtQuickDS.dll. The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, and the matching Traditional Chinese language installation. For enterprise servicing, use Microsoft language media that matches the Windows release and architecture.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

Do not run:

regsvr32 ChtQuickDS.dll

as a generic fix. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the registration entry point required for self-registration. Microsoft documents the command for that type of library, while public export information for this file does not show the usual DllRegisterServer entry point.

Quick IME is a Windows input component, not a normal application COM plug-in that users repair by registering a DLL. Reinstall the language component and repair Windows instead.

If System Restore is needed

Use System Restore only when the failure clearly began after a recent system change and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  5. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  6. Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore can change installed programs, drivers, settings, and system files. It is not a first-line replacement for reinstalling Traditional Chinese Quick IME. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains what the process can change.

FAQ

Is chtquickds.dll malware?

The filename refers to a legitimate Windows component associated with Microsoft Traditional Chinese Quick IME. A file with that name in an unusual folder, without a valid Microsoft signature, still deserves investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

No. Installing those runtimes is not the normal repair for this file. Reinstall Traditional Chinese language support and repair Windows components.

Where is the file on Windows 10 and Windows 11?

It may be under C:WindowsSystem32 or a Traditional Chinese input-method directory. Exact paths vary by release, architecture, language configuration, and servicing state.

Should I install Chinese (Traditional, Hong Kong SAR)?

Use the Traditional Chinese language identity appropriate for your Windows configuration. On newer releases, Microsoft identifies zh-TW as supported and marks zh-HK as obsolete in its language-pack table.

What if only one application reports the error?

Repair Windows and the Quick IME first. Then verify or reinstall that application from its official installer. The filename alone does not prove that the application officially owns the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I fix it with Device Manager?

Usually no. This is an input-method component rather than a device driver. Device Manager is relevant only when separate hardware or driver errors began at the same time.

What is the safest fix?

Re-add Traditional Chinese language support, confirm that Microsoft Quick is installed, install Windows updates, then run DISM followed by SFC. Avoid loose DLL downloads and generic regsvr32 commands.
