- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- “ndszip.dll is not designed to run on Windows.”
The wording varies, but the underlying issue is generally the same: a Novell client component is missing, damaged, incompatible, or still referenced after the client was removed.

What is ndszip.dll?
ndszip.dll is associated with the legacy Novell Client for Windows. Its reported description is “Novell NetWare Client NDSZIP.” Novell, Inc. developed the client software.
It is not:
- A Windows system component
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file
- A DirectX file
- A .NET Framework file
- A graphics driver
- A general-purpose DLL required by modern Windows
Historical file inventories describe ndszip.dll as a 32-bit Novell client component. That does not mean every copy has the same version, size, or compatibility. A file with the right name but the wrong architecture or release may still produce an entry-point or loading error.
There is no reliable indication that ndszip.dll belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Its expected location depends on the Novell client package and the application component loading it.
Why Windows reports the error
The most common causes are:
- The Novell Client was partially uninstalled.
- An upgrade left files from different client generations.
- The DLL was deleted or damaged.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- A 32-bit legacy component is being loaded by an incompatible installation.
- A startup entry still calls the client after it was removed.
- The DLL exists, but one of its dependencies is missing.
- The old client is no longer supported by the current Windows release.
The exact executable requesting the file matters. A startup error does not necessarily mean that a visible application is broken. It may come from a service, scheduled task, login component, or network provider left behind by the Novell client.
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting ndszip.dll
Before reinstalling anything, find out whether the error comes from the Novell client or a stale reference.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Novell, Novell Client, or Open Enterprise Server.
On Windows 10:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Search for the same names.
Also check the traditional list:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for a Novell or Open Enterprise Server client entry.
If the client is installed and the computer still connects to organizational network resources, do not remove it yet. Ask the network administrator which client package and release the organization supports.
Check startup items
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps on Windows 11, or Startup on Windows 10.
- Look for Novell, NetWare, or an unknown item associated with the error.
- Right-click an item and choose Open file location, if available.
- Note the executable name and folder.
Do not delete startup entries at random. If the executable points to an old Novell installation, use the client’s uninstaller or reinstall the matching package before removing leftovers.

When the error appears, Windows may identify the program that caused it. Write down that executable name.
If the message appears during login, the caller may be a service or network component rather than a normal desktop application. If it appears only when launching a particular program, inspect that program’s installation and compatibility before assuming Windows is damaged.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the complete Novell client
This is the most likely solution when the client is still needed.
Do not replace only ndszip.dll. The client may also require matching services, configuration files, network-provider components, and dependent libraries. Mixing one DLL from a different release can change a missing-file error into an incompatible-version error.
Choose the correct client package
The historical Novell Client 4.x releases were intended for older Windows versions, including Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. They are not automatically appropriate for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
The modern successor is the Client for Open Enterprise Server, which has separate supported releases for current Windows systems and supports x86 and x64 editions of Windows 10 and Windows 11 according to its vendor documentation.
Use:
- The organization’s approved installation media
- The vendor’s official client download supplied by your administrator
- The same client generation already used by the organization
- The package intended for the installed Windows release and architecture
Do not combine files from an old Novell Client installation with a modern OpenText client.

Reinstall an older package
If an authorized administrator confirms that the machine uses the legacy client:
Recommended Free Tools
- Copy the official self-extracting installer to a temporary folder.
- Run the installer.
- Choose an extraction folder when prompted.
- Select Unzip or the equivalent extraction command.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Run `setupnw.exe**.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt if shown.
- Follow the client setup wizard.
- Restart Windows when requested.
The exact installer screens can differ between releases. Do not use an installer intended for a different Windows version simply because its name appears similar.
Reinstall the current client
If the computer runs Windows 10 or Windows 11 and still needs access to Open Enterprise Server resources:
- Obtain the approved Client for Open Enterprise Server package.
- Close open network applications.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Allow it to remove or upgrade the existing client when prompted.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the network login, mapped drives, and required services.
If an old Novell client remains installed, remove it cleanly before installing the supported client unless the organization’s deployment instructions specify an in-place upgrade.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair is successful when:
- The
ndszip.dllmessage no longer appears. - The Novell or Open Enterprise Server login component starts normally.
- Required network drives or services connect.
- Event Viewer no longer reports the same module-loading failure.
- The client’s own diagnostics or status panel reports a healthy installation.
If the same error returns immediately, continue with the antivirus and architecture checks below rather than copying a DLL manually.

Security software may remove an old client file because legacy binaries can trigger reputation or heuristic detections. The filename alone does not prove that a file is safe or malicious.
Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Search for an entry involving
ndszip.dllor the Novell client. - Open the detection details.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The client was installed from trusted organizational media.
- The detection has been reviewed by the organization’s security administrator.
- The file is confirmed to be a false positive.
- The complete client package will be repaired or reinstalled afterward.
Do not disable antivirus protection to accept a DLL downloaded from an archive. If the file was quarantined, repairing the parent client is safer than restoring an isolated file.
For a managed computer, check the organization’s endpoint-security console or contact the administrator. Enterprise security policies may prevent local restoration.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A legacy Novell component may be 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit. That is not automatically a problem. A 32-bit DLL must be loaded by the correct 32-bit application or client component.
Do not assume that:
- A 32-bit DLL belongs in
System32 - Copying it into both
System32andSysWOW64will fix the error - A 64-bit client can use an arbitrary 32-bit replacement
- A file from an older client release is compatible with a newer client
To check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
On older Windows versions:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
msinfo32. - Press Enter.
- Check System Type.
The correct repair is still the complete client package intended for that Windows release. If the message says “entry point not found,” the DLL may exist but be from the wrong client generation. Reinstalling a matching package is more appropriate than adding another copy.
Fix 5: Determine whether the client is obsolete
If the computer no longer connects to NetWare, eDirectory, or Open Enterprise Server resources, removing the old client may be the correct solution.
This is common after a company migrates to a different file server, identity system, or network platform. Leaving an obsolete client partially installed can cause Windows to call a DLL that no longer exists.
Remove the client
On Windows 11:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the Novell or Open Enterprise Server client.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the client.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart when prompted.
You can also open appwiz.cpl and remove the client from Programs and Features.

- Review Startup apps.
- Check Services for a clearly identified leftover Novell service.
- Open Task Scheduler and inspect tasks associated with the old client.
- Remove a leftover startup reference only after confirming that the Novell software is no longer required.
On a business computer, involve the administrator before uninstalling a network client. Removing it can prevent access to managed shares or authentication services.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
ndszip.dll is a third-party application file, so Windows usually will not restore it through System File Checker. SFC may report that Windows has no integrity violations even while this DLL is missing.
These commands are useful when the error appeared alongside broader Windows corruption, failed updates, damaged system components, or multiple unrelated application failures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Restart Windows after both commands finish and test the affected program again.
Success means the command reports that component repair completed or that SFC found and repaired corrupted Windows files. If SFC reports no integrity violations and ndszip.dll is still missing, that result is expected for a third-party Novell file. Reinstall the Novell client instead.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention, while repair actions are completed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the Novell client remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when indicated
ndszip.dll is not a graphics, sound, chipset, or DirectX driver. Device Manager will not normally restore it.
Use Device Manager only if the error appeared with other hardware failures or Windows reports a network-adapter problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver status and provider.
- Use Update driver only with a driver supplied by the computer or adapter manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the network connection.
Do not uninstall a working network adapter merely because ndszip.dll is missing. The Novell client and the network adapter driver are separate components.
Manually hunting through driver versions can be tedious when several devices have stale drivers. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is completed by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the Novell client.
Fix 8: Use System Restore or an organizational backup
If the error began immediately after uninstalling, upgrading, or cleaning the computer, restore the previous client installation if possible.
Use System Restore
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if available.
- Pick a restore point from before the change.
- Select Next.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish.
System Restore may not be available, and it may not restore a complete networking client. An organizational backup or the original installation media is preferable when the client is business-critical.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why downloading ndszip.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download pages often encourage users to copy a file into System32. That approach can fail because:
- The file may contain malware.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- The version may not match the client.
- The file may have been modified or mislabeled.
- A required dependency may still be missing.
- The application may be calling a different client component.
- Copying the file can leave the installation in a mixed, unsupported state.
The safe source is the complete, approved Novell or OpenText client installer supplied by the vendor or your organization. If an administrator must recover one file manually, it should be extracted from the exact trusted package and placed only in the documented client directory.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for repairing every missing DLL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Running:
regsvr32 ndszip.dll
is unlikely to repair a missing Novell client component. It may report that DllRegisterServer was not found, or it may produce another error. That result does not identify the real problem.

Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor explicitly documents registration for that specific DLL. For ndszip.dll, repairing the parent client is the appropriate path.
If the file exists but still cannot load
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that ndszip.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency required by the DLL.
An “entry point not found” message usually suggests an incompatible version rather than a simple missing file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn either case:
- Note the executable named in the error.
- Confirm the client release installed.
- Check whether old and new Novell client generations coexist.
- Repair or remove the client cleanly.
- Ask the network administrator for the approved package.
- Check antivirus logs for blocked dependencies.
- Avoid replacing individual files from unrelated installations.
Frequently asked questions
Is ndszip.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with the third-party Novell Client for Windows and is not a normal Windows component.
Is ndszip.dll a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime?
No evidence supports that identification. A modern Open Enterprise Server installer may install Visual C++ dependencies, but that does not make ndszip.dll a Visual C++ file.
Is ndszip.dll a 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Historical inventories identify it as a 32-bit legacy component. Use the complete client package intended for the operating system rather than trying to place an individual copy in Windows system folders.
Should I copy ndszip.dll into System32?
No. The expected client directory is determined by the Novell installation. Copying it into System32 can create an architecture or version mismatch.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWill SFC restore ndszip.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while ndszip.dll belongs to third-party Novell software.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable packages?
Not as the first fix. Install a runtime only if the approved Novell or OpenText installer specifically reports that dependency.
What if I no longer use Novell networking?
Uninstall the obsolete client through Windows Apps or Programs and Features, then restart. Removing the old software is often safer than restoring a DLL that the computer no longer needs.
Is the file malicious?
The filename alone cannot establish whether a file is safe or malicious. Verify its location, digital signature where available, parent installer, and source. Treat an unexplained copy from the internet as untrusted.
Why did the error appear after an upgrade?
An upgrade may leave a startup reference to the old client, mix files from different releases, or remove a legacy component that newer Windows no longer supports. A clean migration or complete removal usually resolves that situation.
What should I do if reinstalling fails?
Record the Windows version, system architecture, client release, exact error text, and executable name. Then contact the organization’s network administrator or software support team. They may need to remove an old client completely, restore a supported package, or migrate the computer away from the legacy client.
