These are vendor-published component examples, not a promise that every machine at the minimum will be smooth or that every machine at the recommended tier will maintain a particular frame rate. The parts are old enough that a newer computer may be faster, slower, or simply incompatible in a specific way; compare the exact model, operating-system architecture, and available memory rather than relying on a product’s release year.

What each requirement actually tells you
Processor
The minimum examples are the dual-core Core i3-4160 and quad-core FX-4350. The recommended examples move to the quad-core Core i5-4590 and Ryzen 3 2200G. This tells you which named CPUs Steam used for its tiers; it does not establish a precise equivalency for every newer laptop or low-power processor. Check the model number, not just “Core i3,” “Ryzen 3,” or the number of advertised cores.
Memory
Necesse’s listed floor is 4 GB of system RAM and the recommended amount is 8 GB. The number is installed system memory, not graphics memory. A computer with 4 GB can meet the published minimum while leaving little headroom for Windows, a desktop environment, browsers, voice chat, or other background applications. If your computer has 8 GB, that satisfies the listed recommended memory tier, but it does not override a weaker CPU, GPU, driver, or operating system.
Graphics processor and VRAM
At minimum, Steam names a GeForce GT 440 with 1 GB or Radeon HD 6570 with 1 GB. The recommended examples are a GeForce GTX 650 with 2 GB or Radeon HD 7750 with 2 GB. Treat the model and memory amount as a pair. “1 GB graphics” by itself is not enough information, and integrated graphics may report shared system memory rather than dedicated VRAM. The published table does not provide a modern-GPU equivalency chart or a benchmark ranking.
Operating system and architecture
Windows requires 64-bit Windows 10 in the listing. macOS is written as MacOS X 10.8 (64-bit), together with the M1/M-chip exclusions in the two notes. Linux is described as any newer 64-bit Linux operating system. A 32-bit installation therefore misses the stated requirement even if the processor and graphics hardware appear powerful enough.

Storage
Each platform lists 500 MB of available space. That is a small installation requirement, but it is still free space required on the drive where Steam installs the game. It is not the same as total drive capacity, and an almost-full drive can create separate operating-system or update problems.
How to check your computer before installing
Windows 10 or later
- Open Settings > System > About. Record the processor model, installed RAM, and “System type.” Confirm that the operating system is 64-bit.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
dxdiag, and press Enter. On the System tab, confirm the CPU and memory. On the Display tab, record the exact GPU name and the displayed graphics-memory figures. - Open File Explorer > This PC. Check the free space on the drive selected for the Steam library; leave at least the listed 500 MB available, with additional room for Windows and Steam operations.
- Compare every recorded value with the Windows row in the table. Do not stop after finding one matching part: the weakest CPU, GPU, RAM amount, or operating-system condition determines whether the machine reaches the tier.
Intel-based or other supported macOS systems
- Choose Apple menu > About This Mac and note the macOS version, processor, memory, and startup-disk capacity.
- Open System Report from that window and inspect Graphics/Displays for the GPU model. This is more useful than judging performance from the Mac’s marketing name.
- In Finder, select the installation volume and choose File > Get Info to check available storage.
- Apply the Steam Mac caveat exactly as written. The minimum note excludes M1-chip Macs, while the recommended note excludes M-chip Macs. Do not treat an M-series Mac as validated merely because its CPU is newer than the listed Intel examples.
Linux and SteamOS
- Open a terminal and run
uname -m. A 64-bit installation normally reportsx86_64on a conventional PC; record the result rather than assuming it. - Run
lscpufor the processor model andfree -hfor installed and available memory. - Run
lspci | grep -E "VGA|3D|Display"to identify the graphics adapter. Driver tools supplied by your distribution can provide additional VRAM information. - Run
df -hand check the filesystem that contains the Steam library for at least 500 MB free. - Compare the results with the SteamOS + Linux row. “Newer Linux” does not mean every old or unsupported distribution is covered; the published condition is a 64-bit Linux operating system.

Best-settings method for smooth performance
The available official material does not rank Necesse’s graphics options by performance impact, provide a current low-end preset, or publish a universal FPS result. The safest answer to “best settings” is therefore a repeatable adjustment method rather than an invented preset.
1. Record a baseline
Launch the game with the current graphics options and note the display resolution, window or fullscreen mode, synchronization setting, and any quality controls shown by your build. Play for several minutes in a representative area. A quiet early-game room is not a useful comparison if your actual problem appears in a crowded settlement or during combat.
2. Change one control at a time
Use the graphics menu currently shipped with your version. Lower or disable one available quality control, apply it, and return to the same type of scene. Changing everything simultaneously makes it impossible to know which adjustment helped and can reduce image quality unnecessarily. Because no controlled setting comparison is available, describe any improvement as an observation on your machine, not as a universal Necesse result.

3. Test the workload that causes the symptom
If the problem is a low frame rate during exploration, test exploration. If it occurs in a settlement, test a similarly busy settlement. The official version history notes possible performance issues when many settlements are present, so a simple empty-world check can miss the condition you care about.
4. Keep the first stable image
Stop lowering options once movement and interaction are consistent enough for you. A very low preset is not automatically better if it creates distracting image quality or does not address the actual bottleneck. Save or write down the working values so a later driver or game update can be compared with the same baseline.
5. Separate graphics symptoms from world rules
Necesse’s world-settings documentation covers gameplay choices such as difficulty, death penalty, raids, and survival rules. Those settings change how the world plays; they are not graphics-performance controls. Do not alter a death penalty or raid rule expecting it to repair a driver crash or a rendering slowdown.

Known performance history and what it does not prove
The official version history records several performance-related changes over the game’s development. It mentions reduced lag spikes associated with garbage collection, a fix for VSync slowing load times, and a startup loading screen that became FPS-limited. It also notes that having many settlements can cause performance issues. These entries document historical fixes or warnings; they are not a controlled test of the current build and do not establish that one setting will produce a measured gain on your computer.

If your current build appears to pause during loading, testing the synchronization control as a diagnostic may be reasonable, but do not assume the historical fix describes every present configuration. Likewise, a settlement-related slowdown can involve simulation workload rather than a single graphics slider.

Regular crashes on Windows with Intel graphics
Steam specifically warns that some Intel graphics drivers have caused regular crashes. Confirm the exact adapter and driver version, install the current driver offered through the computer or graphics manufacturer, and restart before testing again. If the problem persists, use the game’s current official support route and include the GPU model, driver version, operating-system version, and the circumstances of the crash. Do not conclude that the CPU fails the requirement when the store’s own warning points to a graphics-driver issue.
An M-chip Mac is being evaluated as if it were a normal CPU upgrade
The Mac notes are compatibility statements, not performance estimates. The minimum note says M1-chip Macs are unsupported, and the recommended note says M-chip Macs are unsupported. A newer-looking processor name does not remove that caveat. Verify a current support statement before spending money or relying on an unofficial workaround.

Historical notes about garbage-collection lag spikes and VSync-related load times show that the game has received performance work. They do not prove that a current stutter has the same cause. Reproduce the issue after a clean restart, record whether it happens in menus, loading, exploration, combat, or settlements, and compare one graphics change at a time. Include those observations in a support request instead of guessing at a frame-rate number.

Linux or SteamOS does not behave like Windows
Recheck that the installation is 64-bit, the distribution is current enough for the Steam client and graphics stack, and the correct GPU driver is active. The store’s Linux requirement does not promise identical behavior across every distribution or driver combination. Record the distribution, kernel or driver details, GPU model, and whether the issue occurs on SteamOS or another Linux installation when seeking help.
Steam Deck and server context
The official Necesse press kit says the game gained Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck support and describes performance improvements made during development. Steam Deck support is therefore an official platform statement, but it is not a substitute for a Deck-specific frame-rate test or a guarantee for every Deck configuration and software state.
Necesse also has official dedicated-server downloads for Windows 64-bit, macOS, and Linux 64-bit. The server page displays entries including v1.1.1. That is useful evidence that server builds exist, but it is not conclusive proof of the current client release version. Do not use a server version label as a client benchmark or as a reason to alter the client requirements above.
Should you upgrade your computer?
Start with the weakest category in your comparison, not with a generic “gaming PC” recommendation. If the machine has 4 GB RAM but otherwise meets the minimum, memory capacity may be the limiting category; if it has 8 GB but an older graphics adapter below the named 1 GB examples, RAM alone will not solve the mismatch. A processor upgrade cannot correct an unsupported operating system, and a graphics upgrade may be impossible or impractical in a laptop.
