Yes. Need for Speed Payback contains swearing. The U.S. Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rates the game Teen and includes Language in its content descriptors. The ESRB’s title-specific summary gives one explicit example: the word “a*shole” is heard in dialogue. That confirms profanity is present, but the rating page does not publish a complete transcript or say how often other profane words occur.
What the official rating confirms
The clearest answer comes from the ESRB’s listing for the game. It assigns Need for Speed Payback a Teen rating and lists three content descriptors:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Language
- Mild Suggestive Themes
- Mild Violence
In the rating summary, the ESRB states: “The word ‘a*shole’ is heard in the dialogue.” The asterisk appears in the organization’s published wording and is retained here exactly. This is an official example of profanity in the game, not an inference from player comments or a user-submitted transcript. You can read the complete rating entry at the ESRB’s Need for Speed Payback rating.

Therefore, a household rule of “no swearing at all” is not compatible with the evidence available for this game. If your standard is whether any spoken profanity exists, the answer is yes.

What the ESRB does not tell you
The rating confirms the presence of language, but it is not a word-for-word script. The ESRB summary does not provide:
- A total number of profane lines
- A list of every word used
- A frequency such as “once per hour” or “throughout the campaign”
- A breakdown by character, mission, or cutscene
- A statement that “a*shole” is the only swear word
That limitation matters. The disclosed example proves at least one instance, while the absence of additional examples on the rating page cannot be treated as proof that no other profanity appears. Conversely, the listing does not justify saying that the dialogue is constantly profane or that the quoted word is the strongest language in the game. The defensible conclusion is narrower: profanity is present, and the ESRB has identified one example, but its public summary does not quantify the overall amount.
How to interpret the “Language” descriptor
“Language” is a formal ESRB content descriptor attached to the Teen rating. It signals that language content contributed to the rating decision. The descriptor is broader than the single example in the summary, so it should be read together with the quoted line rather than substituted for a full content log.
The wording also helps separate confirmed facts from assumptions. The ESRB says the word is heard “in the dialogue.” That means the example is spoken by a character or otherwise occurs as part of voiced conversation; it is not merely a menu label, a written sign, or a player-created name in the evidence supplied by the rating entry. The summary does not identify the speaker, scene, or exact number of times the word is used.

Because the ESRB uses an asterisk in its quotation, readers should not silently expand that spelling into a different word or assume that every instance is censored in-game. The rating page is reporting the content in abbreviated form, not documenting the game’s audio mix or any optional profanity filter.
Other content mentioned in the same rating
The language example appears in a wider rating summary for an action racing game set around street races in a fictional open-world city. The ESRB also describes content that is unrelated to the question of swearing:
- Police pursuits occur during the game.
- In the Runner race type, players can deliberately crash into police cruisers.
- A cutscene includes gunshots as characters flee a crime scene.
Those details explain why the listing includes Mild Violence, but they do not indicate how frequently profanity occurs. A police chase or a crash is not evidence of a spoken swear word, and the presence of the “Language” descriptor does not change the separate descriptions of violence. Keeping these categories separate prevents the rating summary from being read as a transcript.

The two pages serve different purposes. The ESRB entry is the source that supplies the explicit “a*shole” example and the detailed rating summary. EA’s page confirms that Language is part of the product’s published content information. Neither page claims to be a complete script, and neither establishes a scene-by-scene tally.
What this means for parents and players
Use the confirmed information to match the game to your own threshold rather than trying to infer a precise amount that the official summaries do not provide.
If any profanity is unacceptable
The answer is straightforward: Need for Speed Payback does not meet a zero-profanity requirement, because the ESRB explicitly reports at least one spoken use of “a*shole.”
If one disclosed example is acceptable
You can establish that the game contains at least that example, but you cannot use the rating page to guarantee that it is the only profane expression. A decision based on a strict word list would require a complete transcript or direct review of the game’s dialogue, neither of which is supplied by the official rating summaries.

If you need the amount or severity before playing
Do not treat the Teen label as a substitute for the information you need. The rating tells you that Language is present and gives one example; it does not measure frequency, duration, or intensity. Ask for a detailed, scene-by-scene content account from a source that actually documents the dialogue, and check that the account covers the edition and language version you plan to use.
If you are checking several games against one house rule
Apply the same test to each title: look for the official rating, read every listed descriptor, and distinguish an explicit quotation from a general category. A descriptor can establish that a type of content exists without telling you how often it appears. That method avoids both underestimating the game and overstating what the rating proves.

The Teen classification cited here is the ESRB’s U.S. rating. Other countries and territories may use different rating organizations, age labels, descriptors, and summaries. A different regional label does not erase the dialogue identified by the ESRB; it simply reflects another classification system and possibly different disclosure conventions.

Do not assume that a local age category maps one-for-one to the ESRB’s Teen label. The U.S. evidence still answers whether the ESRB found language in its reviewed version, while a regional authority may describe the content differently or provide a different level of detail.

Why a full profanity count cannot be responsibly supplied
A count requires defined rules and a complete source: Which words qualify? Do repeated lines count separately? Are subtitles and spoken audio identical? Do optional conversations, promotional footage, or localization changes count? The ESRB page answers none of those methodological questions. It gives a content descriptor and one representative quotation for a rating summary.
That is why claims such as “there are exactly X swear words,” “the game swears in every mission,” or “that is the only profanity” go beyond the documented evidence. The reliable statement remains limited but useful: the game contains spoken profanity, with “a*shole” explicitly cited by the ESRB, and the public rating does not quantify the rest.
Quick reference
| Question | What the official information supports |
|---|---|
| Does the game have swearing? | Yes. The ESRB lists Language and says “a*shole” is heard in dialogue. |
| What rating does it have in the U.S.? | Teen from the ESRB. |
| What other ESRB descriptors are listed? | Mild Suggestive Themes and Mild Violence, in addition to Language. |
| How much profanity is there? | Not stated. The summary gives no count, frequency, or complete list. |
| Is the quoted word necessarily the only one? | No. The rating page does not say it is the sole example. |
| Does the rating explain every scene? | No. It summarizes selected content and is not a full dialogue transcript. |
| Does EA also identify language content? | Yes. EA’s product page lists Language among the descriptors. |
Bottom line for a content check
Need for Speed Payback does contain swearing. The strongest directly documented detail is the ESRB’s statement that “a*shole” is heard in dialogue, alongside the Language descriptor on the game’s Teen rating. That establishes profanity but not its frequency, total amount, or complete vocabulary. Treat the rating as a confirmed warning that language occurs, not as a transcript or a promise that the quoted word is the only example.
