Need for Speed Underground 2 has community projects using NVIDIA RTX Remix to add path-traced lighting and upgraded assets, but there is no finished official remaster announced in the sources available for this article. The projects are works in progress, and their setup requirements and performance caveats differ.

Does Need for Speed Underground 2 work with RTX Remix?

Yes. NVIDIA lists Need for Speed Underground 2 as a game RTX Remix works best with. RTX Remix is designed for older DirectX 8 and 9 games that use a fixed-function rendering pipeline. Compatibility means the runtime can intercept most drawing instructions; it does not guarantee that every effect will behave correctly. Some games or effects may require replacement assets or custom support. NVIDIA’s RTX Remix overview and compatibility guide explain those limits.

RTX Remix is a modding workflow, not an automatic remaster. Its runtime captures a game scene and, during modded playback, can replace assets and relight the scene with path tracing. The Toolkit is an offline editor for creating replacement assets, materials, and lights. Added visual elements do not change gameplay. NVIDIA’s overview describes the workflow.

Which Underground 2 RTX Remix projects are available?

Two community repositories describe distinct projects. Their pages can change, so check the linked README and release instructions before installing; the descriptions below reflect the project information available on October 8, 2026.

Project What its page says Setup and caveats
Underground2RTX Aims to restore the original lights and add more. The project page marks some lighting for rework and buildings, race locations, and texture packaging as in progress or planned. Requires a copy of Need for Speed Underground 2 and RTX Remix release and nightly builds. Its README warns that performance is currently poor and that more than 100 lights are frequently in view. This is the project’s own warning, not an independent benchmark.
Ekozmaster’s NFSU2-RTX-Remix A separate project with its own installation instructions and dependencies. Lists Underground 2 Widescreen Fix, RTX Remix, Bridge Remix, and DXVK-Remix. Its README describes placing files and configuring them next to SPEED2.exe; it mentions RTX-Remix 0.2.0 in those instructions. Verify the current README and releases before following them.

These are not interchangeable installation recipes. Follow the instructions for the specific repository and versions you choose rather than combining files or dependencies from both projects.

How do I install an Underground 2 RTX Remix mod?

There is no single universal installation path: the Ekozmaster project documents dependencies and file placement that the Underground2RTX page does not describe in the same way. Use the relevant project’s current instructions rather than assuming the steps below cover both.

  1. Choose one project. Read its current README and release notes: Underground2RTX or Ekozmaster’s NFSU2-RTX-Remix.
  2. Confirm the prerequisites listed there. Underground2RTX says you need a copy of the original game plus RTX Remix release and nightly builds. Ekozmaster’s project lists Underground 2 Widescreen Fix, RTX Remix, Bridge Remix, and DXVK-Remix.
  3. Follow that project’s file and configuration steps exactly. Ekozmaster’s README describes placing files and configuration next to SPEED2.exe; do not apply this detail to another project unless its instructions also say to do so.
  4. Check for updated versions before launch. The Ekozmaster instructions mention RTX-Remix 0.2.0, but repository instructions and software versions may change. Use the version and release guidance currently published by your chosen project.

Do I need the original game?

Underground2RTX explicitly requires a copy of Need for Speed Underground 2. Ekozmaster’s listed setup also depends on Underground 2 components, but its cited dependency list is not a separate statement about game ownership. Neither project provides a replacement for the original game files.

Will ray tracing improve the textures automatically?

No. Path tracing changes how lighting is rendered; it does not by itself create high-resolution textures or physically accurate materials. Those require artists to author and package replacement assets, PBR materials, and lighting changes. NVIDIA’s RTX Remix FAQ says, “RTX Remix is not a ‘one button’ solution to remastering.” NVIDIA RTX Remix FAQ

That distinction matters for these projects: Underground2RTX lists texture packaging and several environment areas as unfinished or planned. A game running through RTX Remix should not be mistaken for a complete texture overhaul.

What GPU do I need, and what performance should I expect?

The available project information does not establish a verified minimum GPU or a reliable expected frame rate for either mod. RTX Remix support for path tracing does not, on its own, establish a particular game’s hardware requirement. Underground2RTX warns that performance is currently poor and often has more than 100 lights in view, but gives no measured FPS result; do not treat that light count as a general benchmark. Check the chosen project’s latest notes and test on your own system rather than relying on an unsupported GPU recommendation.
