nehdblkaccess.dll Missing: Restore Nero Safely on Windows 11/10

nehdblkaccess.dll is a Nero Burning ROM library, not a Windows system file. If nehdblkaccess.dll is missing, Windows usually cannot start Nero because the Nero installation is incomplete, damaged, quarantined, or incompatible with the application still installed.

Before changing anything, note:

  • Which program displays the error: Nero Burning ROM, another Nero component, or Windows startup
  • The exact message, such as “was not found,” “specified module could not be found,” or “the procedure entry point could not be located”
  • Whether the problem began after uninstalling, updating, cleaning, restoring, or quarantining Nero files
  • Your Windows edition and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • The installed Nero version
  • Whether Nero came from original media, an OEM bundle, or an unofficial source
  • Whether Nero is still listed under Settings > Apps > Installed apps

The safest repair is to repair Nero if Windows offers that option. If repair fails, uninstall Nero, restart Windows, and reinstall the matching product from Nero’s official installer, original disc, or OEM recovery media.

What nehdblkaccess.dll belongs to

Public file inventories describe nehdblkaccess.dll as:

  • Description: Nero Library
  • Product: Nero Burning ROM
  • Category: Application file
  • Architecture: 32-bit
  • Commonly listed version: 7.11.14.0
  • Commonly listed size: approximately 0.15 MB
  • Publisher metadata: Ahead Software AG or Nero AG, depending on the product generation

The version and size are historical metadata, not a guarantee that every Nero installation contains the same build. Nero’s company history explains that Ahead Software AG changed its name to Nero AG in 2005.

This file is not part of:

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • DirectX
  • .NET
  • The Windows device-driver system
  • The standard Microsoft Visual C++ runtime itself

There is no reliable basis for copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. It normally belongs in Nero’s own installation directory or one of Nero’s private component folders.

Why the error appears

You may see messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because nehdblkaccess.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because nehdblkaccess.dll was not found.”
  • “There was a problem starting nehdblkaccess.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Error loading nehdblkaccess.dll.”
  • “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library nehdblkaccess.dll.”

A missing-file message commonly follows one of these events:

  1. Nero was only partly installed or updated.
  2. An uninstall removed shared Nero files but left a startup entry behind.
  3. Antivirus software quarantined the file.
  4. Disk cleanup or manual deletion removed part of the installation.
  5. An older Nero release is being launched after a newer release replaced its files.
  6. The file exists, but one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible.
  7. A system restore, disk problem, or malware incident damaged the installation.

“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that nehdblkaccess.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.

Fix 1: Repair Nero from Windows

Repair is the quickest approach when Nero is still installed correctly enough for Windows to identify it.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 Settings

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Search for Nero.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside the Nero entry.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start Nero again.

Some classic desktop installers do not show a Settings repair button. In that case:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the Nero entry.
  5. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows before testing Nero.

What success looks like

The repair worked if Nero opens without the missing-DLL message and its normal functions load. Do not judge success only by the file reappearing in a search result. The application must start and operate normally.

If Repair is unavailable, stops with an error, or does not restore the program, continue with a clean reinstall.

Fix 2: Reinstall the matching Nero version

For this file, reinstalling Nero is usually more reliable than replacing the DLL manually. Use Nero’s official installer, your original Nero disc, or recovery media supplied with the computer or optical drive.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Save any Nero project files or personal settings you need.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Select each relevant Nero component.
  4. Choose Uninstall.
  5. If the classic interface is required, press Windows + R, enter appwiz.cpl, and uninstall Nero from Programs and Features.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Install the same Nero generation that your project or shortcut expects.
  8. Restart again.
  9. Launch Nero from the Start menu rather than an old desktop shortcut.

Do not assume that the newest Nero installer will repair an older Nero installation. An old OEM or Nero 7 application may require its original installer or vendor recovery media. A current release may not contain the historical nehdblkaccess.dll filename or the same build.

If the error appears at startup but Nero is no longer installed, the remaining problem may be a stale startup entry. First check Settings > Apps > Startup and disable an obsolete Nero entry. Also check Task Manager > Startup apps. If a Nero component remains installed, remove it through Apps rather than downloading the missing file.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may remove a legitimate Nero file after identifying it as suspicious or after a damaged installation changes its location.

Windows Security

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Look for an entry referring to nehdblkaccess.dll or a Nero installation file.
  6. Expand the entry and review its original path, detection name, and action.
  7. Do not restore it immediately if the path or publisher is unclear.

Microsoft explains how quarantined items can be reviewed and restored in Protection History.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safer recovery sequence is:

  1. Record the original path shown in Protection History.
  2. Confirm that the file was inside the expected Nero installation directory.
  3. Check that Nero came from original media, an OEM bundle, or an official Nero source.
  4. Prefer uninstalling and reinstalling Nero from a trusted source.
  5. If security software quarantines the newly installed file again, leave it quarantined and contact the security vendor about a suspected false positive.

Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. A copied DLL may be malicious, incorrectly versioned, or built for the wrong architecture.

Fix 4: Verify the installed file and its location

If nehdblkaccess.dll appears to exist, verify that it is the file used by the affected Nero program.

  1. Right-click the Nero shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Note the path in Target.
  5. Select Open File Location.
  6. Look for nehdblkaccess.dll beside the executable or in the application’s component directory.
  7. Right-click the DLL and choose Properties.
  8. Review the Details tab for product and version information.
  9. Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
  10. Select a signature and choose Details.
  11. Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and that the signer matches the expected Nero installation.

The absence of a digital signature alone does not prove that a historical file is malicious, especially with older software. Treat an unexpected location, altered metadata, or a file obtained separately from the Nero installer as a reason to reinstall rather than trust it.

Do not place a copy in System32 or SysWOW64. Windows normally searches an unpackaged application’s own directory before system locations, as described in Microsoft’s DLL search order documentation. A global copy may be ignored, conflict with another application, or create a DLL search-order problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Match the application architecture

Public metadata identifies nehdblkaccess.dll as a 32-bit file. A 32-bit Nero application needs 32-bit libraries even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

On a 64-bit Windows installation:

  • A 32-bit Nero program normally uses its private 32-bit application files.
  • It may also require 32-bit Microsoft runtime files.
  • The correct Visual C++ package is the x86 package, not only the x64 package.
  • SysWOW64 is a Windows system directory, not a general-purpose destination for downloaded DLLs.

To check Windows architecture:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Read System type.

Installing Microsoft Visual C++ is not the default fix for nehdblkaccess.dll. Consider it only when the error, event log, or dependency evidence identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime.

Microsoft provides the official packages, including vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_redist.x64.exe, on its Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page. Do not remove older redistributables just because a newer package is installed. Older applications can require different runtime generations.

After installing the appropriate x86 package, restart Windows and test Nero. If the same error remains, reinstall Nero instead of repeatedly installing unrelated runtimes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Determine whether a dependency is missing

If the file exists but Windows reports “the specified module could not be found,” the missing item may be a dependency.

Use this order:

  1. Confirm that the DLL is in the expected Nero directory.
  2. Run the Nero repair option.
  3. Reinstall the matching Nero version.
  4. Review Event Viewer for a related application error:
  5. Press Windows + X.
  6. Select Event Viewer.
  7. Open Windows Logs > Application.
  8. Look for an error at the time Nero failed.
  9. Note the exact module name if Windows identifies another missing DLL.
  10. Install only the runtime named by reliable evidence.
  11. Test Nero again.

Do not infer that every DLL mentioned in a Nero error is a Visual C++ file. The name nehdblkaccess.dll identifies a Nero library, not a Microsoft runtime.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components when Windows is also damaged

Windows repair commands do not normally recreate a third-party Nero DLL. Use them when other Windows features are also failing, system files are reporting errors, Windows Update is damaged, or multiple unrelated applications have missing system components.

Open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows after both commands complete. Microsoft documents this process in its DISM repair guidance and System File Checker documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Nero. If it reports that it could not repair everything, address the Windows corruption separately. SFC is not a substitute for reinstalling Nero and will not normally restore nehdblkaccess.dll.

Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed is slow and makes the diagnosis harder. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling Nero remains the definitive fix when this application DLL is missing.

Fix 8: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to them

nehdblkaccess.dll is an application library, not a device driver. Device Manager is therefore not the first place to repair this error.

Check drivers only if the failure began with an optical-drive problem, a storage-controller change, or another hardware-related error:

  4. Expand Storage controllers.
  5. Look for a warning icon.
  6. Right-click the affected device.
  7. Select Update driver.
  8. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  9. Restart Windows and test Nero.

For a device that stopped working after an update, open Properties > Driver and review Roll Back Driver, if available. Use the computer or hardware manufacturer’s official driver source when Windows cannot find a suitable driver.

Manually hunting through hardware pages and comparing driver versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies reported driver issues; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling Nero when the application DLL itself is missing.

Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent system change

If Nero worked until a driver, cleanup utility, software installation, or Windows change, System Restore may help when a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs.
  7. Review the changes.
  8. Select Next, then Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore changes system files, settings, and installed programs but does not normally remove personal files. Microsoft explains the procedure and limitations in its System Restore guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the rollback, test Nero. If the error returns after a later Nero update, use the matching Nero installer rather than repeatedly restoring Windows.

Why regsvr32 is not the fix

Do not start with:

regsvr32 nehdblkaccess.dll

regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that nehdblkaccess.dll is an ActiveX control or COM server that requires registration.

Microsoft describes the command in its regsvr32 documentation. A registration error does not restore a missing Nero library, repair its dependencies, or make an incorrect version compatible.

Avoid random DLL downloads

Downloading nehdblkaccess.dll from a random DLL site is risky because the file may:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Contain malware
  • Be the wrong historical build
  • Be the wrong architecture
  • Have missing dependencies
  • Have invalid or altered metadata
  • Be incompatible with the installed Nero release
  • Create a DLL search-order vulnerability

The safe sources are Nero’s official installer and support pages, original Nero installation media, or trusted OEM recovery media. If those sources no longer provide the required old release, contact Nero support or the computer manufacturer rather than using a standalone DLL download.

If Nero still will not start

After reinstalling, check these points:

  1. Confirm that the shortcut points to the Nero installation you intended to keep.
  2. Remove shortcuts pointing to an uninstalled older Nero release.
  3. Check Protection History again for a newly quarantined file.
  4. Verify the installed file’s location and signature.
  5. Review the Application log in Event Viewer.
  6. Record the exact dependency named by the error.
  7. Run a reputable malware scan if files disappeared unexpectedly.
  8. Avoid registry cleaners and automated DLL repair utilities.
  9. If the installation came from unofficial media, remove it and install from an official or original source.
  10. If another program launches the error at startup, disable its stale startup entry or remove the remaining Nero component.

Which Nero version uses it?

Public metadata commonly lists a 32-bit version 7.11.14.0, but that is not a universal version number. Historical Nero installations can contain different builds and sizes.

Should I install the file in System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Restore it through the Nero installation. A 32-bit application does not become compatible merely because a DLL is placed in SysWOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does 64-bit Windows require a 64-bit copy?

Not for a 32-bit Nero application. The application needs its 32-bit library and, where required, x86 dependencies.

Is Visual C++ Redistributable the correct fix?

Only when evidence identifies a missing Visual C++ dependency. It is not the default fix for nehdblkaccess.dll.

Should I use regsvr32?

No. This file is not documented as a registerable COM or ActiveX component. Repair or reinstall Nero instead.

What if Nero was removed but the error appears during startup?

Disable the stale Nero startup entry and uninstall any remaining Nero component. The startup error does not mean Windows needs the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I repair Windows?

Use DISM and SFC when several Windows components are damaged or Windows itself is reporting system-file corruption. They normally will not restore a missing Nero file.

What is the correct first step?

Use Windows’ Nero repair option. If that fails, uninstall Nero, restart Windows, and reinstall the matching version from official Nero media or a trusted OEM source.
